Say Joe Dumars called... trade question

Post#1 » by vwoodruff » Tue Dec 30, 2008 7:54 pm

Say you're Ainge and Joe Dumars calls with the following proposal:

Rip Hamilton, Rasheed, and a future 2nd rounder

for

Ray Ray, Scalabrine, and BBD/Giddens

What would you say?

Dumars is thinking "we're likely to lose Wallace to a ring-chaser contract with a contender and Rip's on the line for 4 years. If we can get Ray to stay competitive in the short term and free up moolah for 2010, then New York can kiss my a$$ when it comes to LBJ/Bosh/Wade."

My initial thoughts are:
(a) I really dislike Rip... really dislike him
(b) Man, that would fill the holes this team has (strengthen bench and big man rotation)
(c) I'd hate to lose Ray
(d) Rip could fill his niche, but it would be 3-5 feet closer to the basket
(e) chemistry?
(f) tough call

I'd say that Joe Dumars better start cleaning out his office in a hurry.

I thought these ridiculous trade threads would stop after Ray picked his game back up. I guess not though! Why would they trade two of their starters to a acquire another starter at a position where they already have a logjam and two scrubs? Plus Sheed is their only good center.

I'd do it, but I doubt that Dumars would. He wouldn't want to send Rasheed to a strong team within his own conference. He'd look worse if Rasheed's team won a title and he was a major contributor on it as well.

This isn't about trading Ray for the sake of trading Ray...

Granted Dumars made what I think was a bonehead "move for the sake of making a move" deal with Denver, so perhaps he's on a tight leash.

I am guessing that Rasheed Wallace will consider an MLE offer from a contender this summer, and Ainge will be on his doorstep with a box of chocolates when the FA signing period starts. Detroit is looking forward... they will not contend this year and are grooming the Stuckey/Johnson/Maxiell corp. Does Wallace stay on board? I think not.

Considering that Wallace fills huge holes for the Cs, I think it makes sense to explore options now.

Dumars has to know this, and it has been mentioned often that the length of Hamilton's contract is a concern. If they're going to blow the team up and go after it from a free agent angle, I could see this being an option for Detroit.

Don't forget that trades are as much about money and posturing as they are about talent these days.

And by the way... there would be some justice in this.

Do not forget how Ainge delivered Rasheed to the Pistons.

we lose some from Rip to Ray. But we gain that range right back with Sheed.

we'd have the most talented frontcourt in the NBA, including the best defensive rotation in KG, Sheed, Perk.

And Rip isn't a shooter like Ray is, but we can work out those kinks.

Chemistry says no, logic says yes.

Aint Rasheed a free agen tnext year and coming here for peanuts anyways? Heard he was gunna spend the season sleeping on KG;s couch and playing xbox...and playing the odd game of ball.

No because we may be able to sign Sheed to the MLE in the offseason.

Sorry, Joe. I was going to read your post, but then I saw your list of favorite Cs. I can't seriously consider the opinion of someone who spans that time span and doesn't have Eddie Pinckney on the list!

I've had this suspicion for quite awhile.

Someone calls up asking for Scal and Davis as part of a trade.

What does Danny say?

THis is the crux of this theoretical situation for me... If Rasheed has a good probability (I'm almost willing to put money on Wallace in green next year) of being a Celtic next year, is it worth swapping Ray for Rip to get an extra title shot with Rasheed?

I'd be torn. RIp is a cheap bast@rd, but I feel that a trade like this would increase our chances this year and lengthen the window a bit.

The Cs depth has me worried, and I don't see it as simple as last year's Cassell/Brown tweak. The gap between the Cs and the rest of the league is tighter than last year and the bench is weaker.

Meh... yeah, Dumars would probably ask for more to start... say a Powe or Allen, but I didn't feel verbose. THe core of any deal like this would be Allen, Wallace, and Hamilton. The rest just makes the money work.

We've got a bunch of comedians here, I tell ya...

lol...Pinckney was just a trade filler to get us Joe Klie in '89.....and get a chucker named Ainge off the Celtics (he was the Cassell of his time)....

I don't know who is crazier, the OP for the trade idea (Dumars would never do this) or those who dismiss it out of hand.

Ray for Rip and Rasheed makes us better this year. And next year. And the year after that.

It gives us cap flexibility (Rips 10m to Rays 18, Rasheeds expiring). It makes us younger, but loose no experience getting a playoff tested vet. You get a guy who may be as professional and works as hard as Ray, but three years younger.

Oh, and you get Rasheed Wallace to boot.

You atleast have to think about it, no?

Why would Dumars do this? Rip and Ray are about a wash although Id give the edge to Hamilton. Sheed is much better than Scalabrine and Sheed will stay with Detroit for the same reasons Dice did. Dumars would never make this call but Boston would never refuse it.
