Garnett Schools O

Post#1 » by BillessuR6 » Fri Jan 2, 2009 9:29 am

I thought this deserves its own thread.

The development of the 22-year-old O’Bryant has been slow since he signed as a free agent last summer, and the team is essentially treating him as a rookie.

Or as a boot camp inductee. That’s how it came together yesterday, after Garnett put two empty sneakers to the left of the basket and started rotating and cutting with the ball to demonstrate his footwork.

Assistant coach Clifford Ray attempted to feed O’Bryant in the post as Garnett bumped the youngster with forearms to the chest, grabs at the neck and waist and anything else to make the backup center react.

“No foul,” said Garnett, staring O’Bryant down after one particularly heavy hack. “No foul, no foul, no foul.”

And then this: “Do whatever I’m doin’.”

O’Bryant finally scored, and this time Garnett looked at Ray and said, “If he scores this is over.”

O’Bryant was then pinned by the two long, wiry tree roots that Garnett calls arms. Ray’s first two entry passes never reached O’Bryant. Garnett pawed them away that easily.

O’Bryant finally scored off a rain-making lob, losing Garnett with a sidestep before dunking the ball.

But it wasn’t over. Garnett stood, his face inches from O’Bryant’s under the basket, and he again pushed the kid in the chest and pointed his fingertips at his own temples.

Judging from the uneasy, hesitant look on O’Bryant’s face, he had no idea what was coming.

So Garnett scooped up the ball and dunked, swinging off the rim and landing right in front of O’Bryant. Then he repeated the violent motion.

“This is how I feel - this is how I feel,” he said before finally allowing O’Bryant to leave.

“Then there’s nothing like going out and showing what you can do. I’m not Patrick O’Bryant, but I’m in here every day. If these guys want to get better, then I’m here. Kevin McHale always told me that if you want to impress me, then go out and show it. So that’s what I go by.”

You have to love what KG brings to the C`s! If this doesn`t wake up POB nothing will.

“That’s just his style,” he added of Garnett’s oral and physical aggression. “That’s his reputation in the league, and some people say I need to work on things, so this is good. We’ve done a few of these.”

What was disconcerting about the stories today was that they reinforced what has been POB's problem all along: the concern that he is simply not improving. He is in his third rookie year.

That was the rap against him at GS and why Nellie let him go. Nellie said he looked terrific and full of promise in his rookie training camp, but, after four months of practice, he still had not improved at all. When he looked the same in his second year training camp, GS decided not to renew his contract. With his talents, and at his age, POB should improve by leaps and bounds as a full-time professional basjetball player.

POB is a long 7 footer, athletic, has a nice shooting touch and is 22. He might "get it" at some point; life works in mysterious ways and he is still only 22. Did I mention he is only 22? I suspect KG is as frustrated as Doc and Nellie have been with POB. Reading the piece this morning I almost get the sense KG was screaming to POB: "Grow a pair, douchebag."

I wouldn't be surprised if at some point he was a legit starting center. I mean there are not that many people with a legit 7 foot nba center body. I would be surprised if he is in Boston long enough for it to click. We probably trade continue to bench or cut him. A team in rebuild mode could probably give him a spot for a few seasons with the hopes that he develops. We probably can not afford the roster spot much longer.

O'Bryant doesn't like basketball. How else could you be 7' tall, that athletic, and be less valuable than Brian Cardinal? Especially with a guy like KG pushing you and players like Ray and KG leading by example demonstrating day in and day out exactly how much work it takes to become a successful NBA player. I would love it if everyone here would just lower their expectations for O'Bryant. He's not going to contribute and we've got $1.5 million tied up this year and next in a huge stiff.

Maybe this is the sort of treatment he needs and maybe it'll wake him up. Did he have players in GS getting in his face and calling him out?

O'Bryant strikes me as afraid to assert himself & afraid to succeed. Shy, maybe. He's got some talent but he tries to disappear on the floor.

For sure

Steven Jackson. - "Ae Patrickkkkkk, i'ma teach you how to shoot tadae! Let's start off with 3s mang, you gotta be outside the 3 point line. remember the key is volume. If you only shoot 3 times, what are the chances you make one? Naw mang, you gotta shoot at least 8 times a game, that way at least one might go in. and if two go in, hey we got ourselves a ballgame! Okay next i'm going to teach how to shoot the nine. Before aiming at the other team, aim at the sky to set off a warning. It's like a heat check. But speaking of heat, hust watch out for them, they can even arrest you for that!"
Al Harrington - "They key to defense is don't play it, it just makes you tired, what you need to be doin is shooting 3s."
Andris Biedrins - "I want you to listen to me patri--" Don Nelson - "That's ENOUGH OF THIS ANDRIS. No teaching him valuable things to be a center. What if he learned to play center?! Then I wouldn't have playing time for him!!!!!! Go practice some 3s Pat... Throw in a sky hook from 24 feet while you're at it."

I think i understand what KG was saying, when he pointed his fingers to his temples. He was saying that you had to want it. It wasn't your body holding you back but your mind. That is my take.

Cs should talk to the Mavs. I'm sure you can get Green back for O'Bryant. Not so sure Dallas would agree. Tough to teach Green defense on that team (KG would haunt Gerald) but certainly an upgrade over POB.

second of all, one free team foul for the Celtics.

The instigator wins that fight.

Nah, I'll take my chances with POB.

At the very least i'm not positive he's a complete lost cause.

Green there isn't a doubt in my mind.
Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
