the way i see it the C's need to add two players to bolster the bench
first they need a wing that can shoot and play solid D, someone that can compliment TA, preferably someone with size that can match up with small forwards complimenting Tony's ability to guard smaller quicker guards; and someone that adds another shooter off the bench
second they need another big man; they need a big post that has size and preferably experience, this player needs to have the length to block shots and alter the shots of the Lebron's and Kobe's of the world off the drive
Here are my some guys to consider to add to the bench that fit these descriptions, AND seem accessible to get:
Post:
-Alonzo Mourning: upside- he can finish around the basket and brings the defensive intensity that is akin to the C's and he has experience; downside- he is somewhat injury prone, coming off an injury; C's chance of getting him- i think very good, i dont see a team that he fits in better with IF he decides not to rejoin the heat
-Joe Smith: upside- experienced, excellent mid range jump shot, good rebounder, though strong help defender, excellent at taking charges; downside- not exactly the best low post defender as he allows stronger posts to push him around and gain position on him; C's chance at getting him- centers strongly around how many other contenders want him, we all know the C's dont have the best pieces to trade with so if their are a lot offers for him he will go elsewhere, but if their are minimal teams interested the C's could swoop in and steal him via low profile trade or in a best case scenario through a buy out
-Robert Horry: upside-can stretch the D out with his shooting ability, is a capable shot blocker, has all the experience you could want; Downside- another small power forward, the c's already have two, doesnt exactly fit the add size to the bench theme, and Danny hates him; C's chance of getting him- excellent, i believe he is ours to be had, i would add him even regardless, even though he doesnt fit either bill that we are looking for, the dude knows how to win
-Jason Smith/Theo Ratliff: Upside- smith- has good size (7 footer) can shoot from 15 to 20 feet, good defensive mobility; Ratliff- his size and his D; downside- smith- doesnt have the frame to bang in their with the bigs, limited arsenal of post moves, ratliff- cant play offense; C's chance of getting them- (ratliff) depends on how philly gauges their playoff hopes, because if they figure they arent getting in or are a 1 and done team they'll most likely field offers for him, smith- is interesting because philly seems down on him, might be willing to give him up if the c's can pry him away for them
-Fransico Elson: upside- has the length to add size to the bench, championship experience with the spurs, can guard the pick and roll, can hit an open 15 footer; downside- thin frame has trouble man-ing up against stronger posts, has trouble getting position in the paint and finishing around the paint, C's chance of getting him- depend if they want him, they could probably work out a trade for him very easily simply because the Bucks have so many posts
-Sean Williams: upside- has enough size and an excellent shot blocker, runs the court well and can finish with a dunk; downside- has no post game, frequently out of position on D, not a great rebounder, C's chance to get them- really hinges upon how the nets feel about his progression and him as a player
-Jeff Foster: upside- tough nosed defender and rebounder; downside- limited offensive ability; chance of getting him- able to be done, though it might hurt the c's in the long run as his contract runs past 2010
Brian Skinner: upside- good rebounder and shot blocker, well rounded defensive player can finish with a dunk at the basket; downside- only 6'9 somewhat short for a center, has no post moves or range on a jump shot, can not shoot free throws; C's chance of getting him- im sure if they wanted him they could throw JR at the clippers and easily come up with a trade
Wing- much harder to find as you cant really afford to "hide" someone on the offensive end at this position (TA already takes care of that role); im not adding anyone they have to give up their whole bench to get, so no mike miller, stephen jackson, or maggette
-Raja Bell: upside- he plays good D and can shoot the 3; downside- is only 6'5 so cant necessarily match up with big small forwards; C's chance of getting him- Unknown, with Jordan on the 15th tee no one knows whether the bobcats are shopping bell, although they did try to package him in a deal for curry thats promising, but he is exactly the type of player that coach brown loves so that is definitely a negative
-Trevor Outlaw/Martell Webster- both would be significant upgrades on both sides of the ball from our backup wings, but im sure with their talent that we dont have the pieces to get them, unless of course Portland with darius miles contracts fresh back on their books decides that their wing depth (currently at about 5 deep) is costing them a bit too much but i doubt it
-Kareem Rush: upside-can shoot the three, and plays serviceable D when he wants too; downside- Not being able to crack philly's lineup? plays D when he wants too;
-Adam Morrison: upside- has size (6'8) and can shoot the three, can share a good cry with big baby; Downside- doesnt play the best D, or good D, any D, maybe KG can work with him on that; Can the C's get him- charlotte is down on him right now, but this really all hinges on charlottes pride, would they give up a third round pick for cap space? even though they never play him and their coach hates him it might be a little tough for the front office to cut their losses, if he wasnt the third pick you could have him for virtually cash compensation and scal to match salaries
-Fransico Garcia: fits the bill perfectly, but in all likely hood too perfectly, at 6'7 with a good shot and a guy that plays tough hard nose D, the Kings locked him up for 5 years at a low salary, but if the C's could somehow pry him away, that would be spectacular
-John Salmons: upside- very good defender, can guard 3 positions, has good numbers from the 3 point line, though he is viewed more as a slasher; downside- has had some attitude problems, not wanting to come off the bench and whatnot, has a high turnover rate, and a five mil a year contract running threw 2011
-Quiton Ross, Rodney Carney, Jarvis Hayes, are in my Roger Mason Jr. categories of guys who might be capable of becoming a great asset off the bench out of nowhere
-if morris almond of utah is at all available id go after him he could be similar to Orlando's courtney lee
I know that this list has some huge flaws in it BUT so does the celtics bench, im just trying to gice danny a couple of ideas so he can jumpstart into fixing it

Re: adding to the bench
Zo would be perfect... but i think at this point its miami or nowhere, and to be honest thats fair enough. I'd still make the offer but wouldnt expect much
Horry wouldnt really help, the other guys would be worth the call to at least offer giddens or something just to see if someone will bite
I would add Mccants to the wing list, i can really see him turning things around if he ended up here.
Missing out on Matt Barnes bit this team in the ass a bit IMO

I've been a fan of Jeff Foster but I'm not sure what his contract situation is and I'm not sure why Indiana would give him away.

Zo seems good. Horry is done. Sean Williams may be good. We still need a PG before anything.

Re: adding to the bench
Matt Barnes is 6'7" and a weak defender what role could he possibly fill on this team?
I think that Pruitt is your PG.
The real need is for a big and some consistent offense. Scal has been playing at least NBA level ball lately so picking up Miles and dumping Cassel and splitting the role between the two of them so we can get away from a lot of Baby and Powe might work but that essentially means committing to Scal for 10-15 mpg and expecting him to shoot and make 3's, yikes.
Zo would be great but he is pretty fragile.
Not to Horry, Sean Williams is a dope, McCants is Eddie House.
Raja Bell for Tony Allen would be great somehow I don't see that happening.
I have been thinking about Salmons a lot but I don't know what we could give to make it worth while for Sacramento.
I think that Joe Smith is possible at the deadline or for a buyout.
Channing Frye is a guy who could help and can't get mins in POR. Is Tony Allen worth taking on for POR?
In the end I not too worried about because of the people that Ainge is passing on, I think he has it under control.
