Big Men Options
Outside of the possibility of PJ coming back after the all-star break and Joe Smith getting bought out, I was wondering what are the big men possibilities out there. All the talk of Marbury is nice and all, but the fact remains we need another big with length more than anything else.
In narrowing down our possible trade partners you have to first identify the teams that wouldn't mind ridding themselves of a big man that can contribute (I.e. bad teams with no playoff aspirations). Then you have to consider that Ainge doesn't want to acquire any bad contracts to simply make a quick fix. Another factor to consider is that most of these "bad" teams are pinning their hopes on 2010 so they're not gonna want to take on any contracts that go past 2009.
Considering these factors I came up with a few potential targets:
1. Shelden Williams for Scal & JR - Williams is pretty much a stiff, but he does have nice size and could fit in as a banger. Only prob with this trade is Williams only has one more year left so they would be taking on an added year of Scal just to get JR.
2. Mikki Moore for Scal, JR & Sam (buyout and he comes back as a coach) - Might be the most plausible idea out there as his contract runs just as long as Scal's and he basically gets no run w/ Sac so he has no value to them. The incentive of chipping a bit of money off their books and acquiring JR might be enough. The question then becomes does he give us what we need? He's not a banger, but he does have good length and is a terrific energy guy who can play the 4/5. not much of an offensive threat however.
3. Joe Smith for Scal and JR - We've all gone over this idea to death. Would be a great fit on both ends, but would require them taking on an extra year of salary (unless there is a buyout agreement of some sort). I think there might be more competition for Smith than the other guys.
4. Brendan Haywood for Scal, JR and Sam - Recovery from injury would have to be factored in, but I remember hearing he would be back before the season ended. I would love to add Haywood, but I don't know if the Wiz are that eager to get rid of him without greater incentive than this package. Contract runs just as long as Scal's.
Let me know what you guys think and add in some other REASONABLE options as well if you can think of any.
*Another note is that Baby/Powe/Walker/Pruitt can all be substituted, but I would assume the team wants to keep Powe, Walker and Pruitt if possible with Baby and JR being more expendable.

I like the idea of Brendan Haywood for Scal, JR and Sam, if he can play before the playoffs.

Re: Big Men Options
Wikipedia says that Shawn Bradley is only 36. I think if he's still in shape he could lace them up for one more go at it. It's not like he lost his extreme height -- he could still just stand there and swat balls away for a couple minutes a night. Surprisingly Bryant Big Country Reeves is only 35, like three years younger than PJ Brown was last season. I don't know if he'd be in good enough shape to lace them up again but I'd at least look into it, since he'd provide a big body to go up against the bigger centers.

What about one of those big guys from Indiana? There may be a little green left in Larry Bird's blood.

Re: Big Men Options
Haywood should be valued as highly as Jamison for the Wizards.
He is by far the centerpiece to any chance they have at a defense. And when playing can even make them have a defense.

Why would anyone trade for scal? Only assets are Powe, pruitt and the young ones. What do I think?
Get someone off the scrap heap.

Scal has to be included in any deal to make the money work and his contract ends before the 2010 season. Moore and Haywood's contracts both end the same time so Scal wouldn't represent any added burden. Williams and Smith's contracts both end this year, which could be potential road block as I mentioned in the earlier post.
In reference to the guy citing Haywood's value to the Wiz, first of all I agree Haywood does represent value to the Wiz in terms of his on court contributions. His availability depends on the Wizard's taking the view that they have two talented young bigs in Blatche and McGee who have higher upside than Haywood. Making these guys centerpieces of their future could allow for Hawyood to become available. I actually think Etan Thomas would be the more realistic option as he represents their 4th big and has the largest contract of the 4, but the money doesn't work. Perhaps some crazy 3 way deal could be worked out somehow (remember Danny went after Thomas a few years back as well).
Remember I'm only suggesting the potential trade options we have going forward. I would love to simply pick up a competent big off the streets without giving up anything, but we may have to take this avenue as the current FA crop is pretty bare right now.

Re: Big Men Options
Hakim Warrick could be an interesting target, not a true big.. but if you have to run small you might be better off doing it with a freak athlete than Baby or Powe.
In the same mold, Tyrus Thomas could fill that 3, 4 role off the bench
Sean Williams, Chris Wilcox, Jamal Magloire... really any one that isnt a stiff and over 6'9 could help, but as we've seen with our bench guys.. making a deal is going to be difficult

Re: Big Men Options
OKC has no need for Brian Scalabrine given their team makeup,
plus Scal has another year on his contract
after this one
which might interfere with OKC's pursuit of free agents this summer.
This has mentioned mentioned probably 15 times, mostly by scully,
going back a year.
If you want to trade for Joe Smith, start with Tony Allen.
It's sort of like the rumored JJ Redick for JR Giddens and Gabe Pruitt trade.
Technically, it's a fair trade.
But Orlando already has SG's like Keith Bogans and Mickael Pietrus,
that Giddens sort of duplicates, and lessens his attraction.
Orlando also has Anthony Johnson behind Jameer Nelson now.
So even though a trade can be fair talent wise, it may not be FIT wise.

How is this a great fit for OKC? I am confused. Scal is terrible, would not play for them, and has an extra year on his contract. No one has ever seen Giddens play in the NBA, and he wasn't exactly a hot commodity on draft night. Where is the gain? Yes, we went over it to death, and almost unanimously concluded that OKC has no reason to do it. It would make more sense to just hold on to Joe Smith's contract and let it expire in peace than to do this trade.
I don't want Sheldon Williams. He is awful. He has not been able to get any burn on bad teams. Mikki Moore is decent, but he is just another body, not really an upgrade. Finally, it would not be wise to trade three players for Haywood, in hopes that he will be able to play later in the season. We want someone who is healthy now, and who should be healthy come playoff time.

By the way, if OKC was actually willing, I wouldn't mind parting with big baby (who ironically was traded here by that franchise) to get Joe Smith. He would really help in the playoffs. He was the Cavs second best big in that series last year.

Calm down buddy, I meant that Joe Smith would be a great fit at both ends of the court FOR US i.e offensively and defensively. If you read the post I mention that we've all gone over this trade option to death, therefore it wasn't necessary to get into the whole feasibility aspect in any great detail.
Regardless of whether or not you believe Smith is likely to come here he is definitely worth mentioning as an option as we've been rumored to have interest and he would fill a desired role which the team has admitted to be pursuing.
I also agree that Williams is the least desirable guy, but nevertheless is a guy who might be a last resort type of option. In terms of Haywood, it goes without saying that the injury issue would have to be verified by the team before anything would take place (as I mentioned above as well).

Powe and Scal for Joe Smith. Works on trade checker. I'd be willing to throw in Giddens or even Pruitt if we signed Marbury or Pargo.

Re: Big Men Options
I think if we trade for an offensive PF like Joe Smith it makes Powe tradeable and he actually might have some value in a trade.
Boston can actually build a trade around Tony Allen and Cassell. That is only 2.5 mil for next season.
Add Powe and Giddens to those two and you could bring back Joe Smith and a minimum contract for roster reasons. But Allen and Powe is a little too much for Smith who might get bought out anyhow who is pretty weak defensively.
I would rather send that package to IND for Jeff Forster who can at least play some defense and some center.

Another guy who could be absolutely perfect for the short and long term is Charlie V. Kind of unique kind of game but worth following.

Charlie V. is like the Uber version of Scalabrine from a scoring talent standpoint, without the court savvy and overall hustle/effort on the defensive end. He's also a pretty solid defensive rebounder.
