What 3 players would you get rid of?

If veterans started knocking on the door again. What 3 players would you want to get rid of? Even though I like Scala, Tony and Cassell I'd waive/trade them in a second to bring in players like PJ, Reggie and Marbury.

Perkins/PJ/O'Bryant
KG/Baby/Powe
Pierce/Walker/Giddens
Ray/R.Miller/House
Rondo/Marbury/Pruitt

I would start from the bottom of the roster not rotation guys. Cassell, Giddens and O'Bryant I guess are the guys that I would look to simply dump, provided we were getting some size.

Im with you on Cassell and O'Bryant. But i think the jury is still out on Giddens. Im thinking JR could be an upgrade to T.A. at some point.

The three I wouldn't mind losing are Cassell, Giddens, and Pruitt. I'd rather the team not give up on O'Bryant just yet.

Who needs Reggie Miller?

I will play the game though, O'Bryant, Cassell (make him a coach or something) and Giddens.

It would have been scal as the third man out but he was been doing well before the injury.

Before making my selection, I'd classify the players as follows:

The Celtics have 4 Championship Quality starters: KG, Pierce, Ray, Rondo and Perk.

The backups are not dependable:

House is just a shooter, who can be covered, and provides little else if
he can't get his shot off or if he isn't hitting, but he's the best (only)
shooter on the bench.

Powe is a 6' 6" low post presence that beats up most teams 2nd units,
but is not designed to succeed against the Redwood Timber
of Cleveland and the Lakers when those teams are at full strength,
ditto San Antonio.

Tony Allen is a terrific perimeter defender and slashing wing
who makes tons of turnovers,
is not a reliable shooter,
and has games where he is mentally out of it.
Not totally reliable.

Glen Davis is an undersized center with a high basketball IQ
who needs to develop a consistent outside shot AND keep his weight down
if he wants to stick around in this league.
As bad as he's been, he's the Celtics best backup C.

Scalabrine is a smart team player who doesn't score or rebound
for his time on the floor,
but spaces the floor with his 3 point shooting,
and makes correct decisions and properly executes his assignments.
Although Scal's #'s usually suck, the team often plays well with him on the floor.
He seems well suited for guarding mobile perimeter Bigs.

22 year old Gabe Pruitt lacks the ball handling to be
a reliable backup PG in the playoffs,
and doesn't run the team like a PG should.
So, Pruitt is basically not a PG in the classic sense.

Pruitt is also not a bench scorer, because his shot doesn't go in (0.324 FG% ?).
Pruitt is a pesky defender, which is the only reason he remains
employed by an NBA team.
Although Pruitt may learn to run an NBA team and even score,
he is a candidate for replacement by a proven ball handler/shooter.

21 year old Bill Walker is an SG sized SF at around 6' 4 1/2".
He seems to have a pretty high basketball IQ,
decent character, and a willingness to learn,
improve and function within the team concept.
He is a 21 year old project who may blossom into something.
Whether he will have more success as a backup SG or SF remains to be seen.

23 year old J.R. Giddens is a 6' 4" lightning quick SG who is slightly taller
and more powerfully built than Tony Allen,
with a questionable character who is possibly a slow learner.
The guy clearly has the physical tools, and the rest is dependent
on his heart, desire, comittment, and willingness to
improve basic skills like shooting and ball handling.
He could possibly replace Tony Allen in the next 2 years,
maybe sooner.

22 year old Patrick O'Bryant scores, rebounds and blocks shot very well.
He is turnover and foul prone, excessively so,
and not strong enough right now to compete with Bigs
at the PF or C spot in the paint.
He has a nice outside shot.
As he grows stronger, he will probably be a fine player, in 2 years.
Forget about him this season or next, but he's gonna be a player at age 24.

Sam Cassell is an expiring contract who will probably mentor
Steph Marbury if Marbury comes on board.
Cassell's greatest value, besides coaching a lot of the current players,
may turn out to be mentoring Steph Marbury's transistion to the Celtics,
which if successful, would be worth many times Cassell's salary.

So, the only obvious trade candidate is Pruitt,
especially if Marbury comes on board.

Tony Allen may be expendable, depending on Giddens and Walker's progress,
plus Marbury could take minutes from Tony.

If Tony is in the trade mix, the Celtics universe of trades,
if they could somehow do a 4 for 1 (Scal, Tony, Pruitt, someone else)
would expand their opportunities for centers to players like
near 7 footer Rasho Nesterovic, an expiring $8.4 million,
who doesn't run the floor as well as Scal, but who is an inside presence
with a decent shot.

Again, if Marbury were to be freed around the All-Star game (Feb. 15),
the Celtics would have time before the trade deadline (Feb. 19)
to swing a deal for Joe Smith or Rasho Nesterovic.

Outside of Pruitt, I don't think anyone's clear cut.
Rasho would make Davis unnecessary.
Joe Smith would pretty much eliminate the need for Scal.

I don't think I've answered your question as cleanly as you'd like,
but I think this is kind of how it all relates.

Giddens, POB, and Cassell are worth cutting outright;

Powe, Pruitt, and even Walker are worth trading if we can get something of value.

Scal is worth trading as cap ballast if we can get something back. TA is worth trading as cap ballast period.

I agree with Pruitt being the only clear cut cut. As for Giddions I haven't seen enough. I would suspect that unless Danny has good reason to believe he is a bust we would want to keep him. POB seems worth keeping for his size alone. In another year or two we could see a nice return on our investment. As for Sam, why cut him unless he wants it. It is just bad. We still haven't seen what he can give us this year. Honestly right now he could be our best guy off the bench. Tony Allen is an interesting one. If we coud get someone else who is a good defender I am all for getting rid of Tony. Sure he is better than half our bench but I don't get the sense that he is a true winner or has the mentality of a winner.

I think that Giddens has more potential then Tony. He seems like he has more size and intelligence. Tony is a great defender, but he makes too many careless turnovers. Plus we'd be saving money if we kept Giddens instead of Tony.
