is there a way for us to get him? i hope the carter trade goes down and he gets waived. we should pick him up. perfect 7 footer who can shoot mid range jumpers and has championship experience.

I am pretty sure he would go back to the spurs...

I would like to see Oberto because he would be the best option and he can be helpful. I doubt he would go back to the Spurs because the time frame he would have to wait to get back the Spurs would push him past March 1st and thus be ineligible for the playoffs. Why would he go back anyway to a team that is not playing him?

What about the 30 day waiting period.....Oberto going back to the Spurs.

I just can't see the Spurs-Jersey trade going down, that is terrible for New Jersey. They'd go from 5 fans in the seats to 2. Dallas is offering more, and Cuban has definitely shown a propensity for getting fleeced to bring in aging stars, if VC goes anywhere I'm betting on Dallas.

Yes, he would have to wait a month to sign with the spurs...

Well, according to a new article the rumor is gaining steam, and bruce bowen and oberto will be bought out. I'm all about Oberto if this is the case, while he's not going to wow you he'd be an experienced, playoff tested big body. Bowen is intriguing too, but I'm not sure there is enough left in the tank to be worth the effort. Imagine Bowen here, we really would be the most hated team in the league, lol.

This sounds like what we needed to happen.

So, is there a prearranged agreement between New Jersey and San Antonio that one or both players returns to San Antonio if they clear waivers? Because this is the type of scenario I think Ainge is hoping occurs more from teams making trades before the deadline. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee you'll be able to get a player ahead of other teams. This is a tough route to go for Ainge. Whereas a trade gets you who you want provided you've something to trade back of interest to your trade partner.

Bowen I recall is a former Celtic but his addition wouldn't sit well with Ray. While Oberto is a forward/center who's listed at 6'10'' and 245 lbs. on NBA dot com. I don't know how well he can defend, but I wonder how strong he is.

If New Jersey trades Carter, San Antonio is considered the front-runner to land the former All-Star.

The most recent proposal has the Spurs sending Roger Mason, George Hill, Fabricio Oberto and Bruce Bowen to New Jersey for Carter.

The Nets would immediately waive Oberto and Bowen to get themselves under the 15-man roster limit.

Players need to be waived before March 1st but they can sign with teams until the regular season is going on. So, the last day of the regular season is the last day players can be signed and still be eligible for the playoffs.

If the trade goes through I don`t think we have a chance at either player. Bowen is a spur, he made his career there, he will probably want to finish it in SA. And I think Oberto is also enjoying his stay in SA. He is playing with a very good friend in Ginobili, I don`t see him changing a team...

They'll do anything to get rid of Carters contract, it really hinders them for 2010 FA season.

Somebody should go over the CBA with a fine-tooth comb to see if the Cs could claim him off of waivers. Relevant factors would include:

1. CAN you use the MLE to make a waiver claim?
2. If so, what counts against the MLE -- just the salary you pay for the rest of the year, or total salary?

Real nice question. Oberto makes $3.5 million this year and next year. But the Celtics only have $2.935 million left because House is using $2.6 million of that exception. My guess is that both the remainder of the exception and Oberto's salary would be pro-rated, in which case with the Celts being over the cap, if they fall $1 short, they can't get him and thus couldn't get Oberto this way. Maybe somebody else has info.

You cannot use the MLE to claim a player.

Boston could use the remainder of the MLE to sign a player, the problem is that at this point of the season it is pro rated but so is the minimum. So it would still be more than twice as much money.

I wouldn't bother to do that with Oberto, sign him sure but he has no role in SA and may not have one in Boston but at least he can play center. Bowen is another story. We really need a defender at the SF spot, I think Ray would like having Bruce on his team as opposed to playing against him.

With Carter in SA, added to Finley there is not going to be many mins at the SF spot add that to Ginobli and whether or not Mason is still there. So Bowen is not going to have much of a role and he is only playing 19 mpg this season anyhow. Obviously it is home and the Spurs will be straight with him, but him coming to Boston makes some sense.

That is the beauty of what Ainge did this season in bringing back Sam I am and leaving the door open for PJ all season. That is important to veteran guys who might want to play one more year, or at least want to go out on their terms not just because nobody good wanted them anymore.
