http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/magaz ... anted=2&em is an article by Michael Lewis -- author of Moneyball -- on Houston GM Daryl Morey, who he seems to regard as the leading practitioner of Bill James kinds of statistical work in the NBA. I've only read the first couple of pages so far, but the article says he got his start with the Celts' new ownership, and moved them in that direction. There's also a tidbit
We had a point guard in Boston who refused to pass the ball to a certain guy.

Yeah. Kenny Anderson, Gary Payton, Marcus Banks, Delonte West. Who wouldn't be passed to though? My guess is Mark Blount because he'd just turn the ball over if you tried to, which doesn't necessarily make you a bad point guard.

This is a really awesome article. It really lets you see how much goes into the game.

Something important to consider when measuring the LAL and SA games:
"One statistical rule of thumb in basketball is that a team leading by more points than there are minutes left near the end of the game has an 80 percent chance of winning. If your team is down by more than 6 points halfway through the final quarter, and you’re anxious to beat the traffic, you can leave knowing that there is slightly less than a 20 percent chance you’ll miss a victory; on the other hand, if you miss a victory, it will have been an improbable and therefore sensational one."
In Both instances the Celtics were up more than 2 points with less than a minute to go - a full posession advantage, forcing two posessions to relinquish the advantage -- based off statistical history, both LAL and SA pulled out improbable wins that wouldn't hold up over the course of a series...
