Boston last hosted the event in 1964.

Can it be at Gillette Stadium? Next year's All-Star game will take place inside of the new Cowboys stadium. And LeBron could be participating in the slam dunk contest to boot. This is going to be the year to watch the All-Star weekend.

Living up to the old adage about doing things bigger in Texas, the Dallas Mavericks and Cowboys are collaborating on hosting next season's showcase event. It will be among the first major events at the soon-to-be-completed, $1.1 billion facility in nearby Arlington.

Citing sources, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported Tuesday that the Mavericks with the NFL's Cowboys would host the 2010 All-Star Game.

And if all goes according to plan, this event will set the record for the largest crowd ever to watch an NBA game, shattering the mark of 44,735 set at the 1989 All-Star Game, not-so-coincidentally held at another Texas-sized venue, the Houston Astrodome.

"It's totally outrageous," NBA commissioner David Stern said.

Just wait until he hears Mavs owner Mark Cuban's idea about putting the record out of reach.

"If we can get people to sit on each other's laps, it could be 200,000," Cuban said, laughing.

The 2010 All-Star weekend is being hyped as a collaboration between teams and cities. Some events will be held at the Dallas Convention Center, with the Mavericks' arena hosting the rookie game on Friday night and the Saturday night festivities, which include the 3-point and dunk contests.

The marquee game will be Sunday, with center court right at midfield of the football stadium.

"We've got complete flexibility with the configuration," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "That's what we spent a lot of money on, to adapt it to these kinds of events."

The Cowboys are also trying to lure Final Fours. They've already landed the 2011 Super Bowl, as well as the Cotton Bowl, starting Jan. 1, 2010.

Basketball in Foxborough in February. Yeah, about that: no.

I'm sure if Cuban and Jones can come to terms on an agreement and can see the bigger picture in terms of expanded revenue for one thing. Then If the Celtics ownership saw it as a great opportunity. They'll call the Kraft family. I see no reason why Boston and Foxborough couldn't pull such an event off.

The Super Bowl took place on the first of February. So, this All-Star event wouldn't interfere with the NFL season. Unless Gillette Stadium is already booked for other outside events. Again, I don't see the problem.

You've been to Foxborough before? Because I was there yesterday as a matter of fact and it seems like the last place you'd put an nba all-star game, maybe that's just me though. Rte.1 in the middle of winter doesn't seem like the best way to lure the stars.

edit-Wasn't there talk a couple years ago about having it at the new convention ctr. in the seaport?

Whatever. I was thinking outside of the box. I prefer not to be a close minded person. But, if the NBA prefers a domed stadium or NBA arena. Then I reckon that excludes Gillette Stadium.

No, the fact that it's the dead of winter when they hold the event is the reason it won't work in Gillette, it has nothing to with closemindedness lol. Maybe Summer League could work when they get that hotel up.

Who wants to have an all star game in a cold climate? Not a good idea. Its like having the Super Bowl in Foxboro. The atmosphere wouldn't be as much fun without outdoor events.

It's about time. It amazes me that they never had one in the Bird era, so it makes sense that they would have it in Boston at some point.

Outside won't work with basketball. Didn't they just recently try it though? Pre-season, Phoenix maybe?.

Don't worry though, the NHL winter classic is expected to come to either Fenway or Gillete, you can get your outside fix that way.

Back on topic, the all star game would be awesome. But I don't think the C's will get one.

You know, I've never thought about the winter being an obstacle for all-star weekend. That sucks; I commute through North Station for work and the place was bumping in the summer during NBA Finals week.
