Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie says that the NBA has granted the team salary cap relief for 2008-09 and 2009-10 on the contract of Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
Abdur-Rahim will still be paid his salary, $12.8 million over the two years, but by an insurance company because of career-ending knee problems.
Really? They give relief for a bad knee but not when someone dies?? Someone please tell me I'm completely wrong on this

I think it was under a different set of rules back then - back then there was no established protocol, so everyone was free to say you've won 16 titles, we're not going to treat you fairly. I think today it would come off the cap a year after the death.
Hopefully he doesn't decide to come back and cause another Darius Miles situation. Even when it was all said and done there were people trying to argue that the doctor's recommendation that he retire because of the injury somehow trumped Miles' decision to continue playing and not end his career. Jackasses.

Incorrect decisions 15 years ago shouldn't necessarily drive decisions for the rest of time. Water under the bridge.

that was my first reaction as well. but i do think things would be different if a player were to die today.

Oh, so Stern values a life lost now more than he did in the early 90's, whattaguy!

Agreed, me too. Remember, when Drazen Petrovic died the Nets got relief...same with the Wolves and Malik Sealy...
Just not the Celtics...typical, though...
