OT: but seeing as how were short on single digit numbers...do you think that means marbury will don bassy's 30 if he ends up here?

seems like an odd number for mikki, but i guess we have slim pickings

He probably would've taken #6 if he could or #33.

I personally think the Celtics have too many retired numbers. I think a ring of honor would have been better when they honor the player and the number but not retire the number. The only player number I feel should be retired is Bill Russell, when your the all time championship winner in any team sports history you should have your number retired.

Also I like the idea of a player coming in trying to living up to a number. Also KG should be wearing 21 and not number 5

Everyone needs to stop whining about numbers. Jesus, just shut up. There is a price to pay for sixteen championships. It's obviously not something that prevents anyone from coming here.

Actually I remember espn talking about this before KG even got here now it was hard for Boston to sign free agent players because of the whole jersey number thing. Nobody is whining about anything I just don't see why every player who has help win a championship here in Boston has to have his number retired. Just something I've never been a big fan of.

Garnett chose #5 to be closer to Russell. I think Garnett would say that his trade to Boston was worth it simply to have gotten an opportunity to meet Russell. The retired numbers are what makes the Celtics unique and displays a rich basketball history. You can't rescind a retired number or you shouldn't once you've already retired it. I don't understand active/retired players who offer to sell their number.

Then I don't think certain players care about being able to have their number. I mean Rondo could've asked for #4 once Gomes was traded to Minnesota and didn't. Perhaps, because it cost money to recall all of the current jerseys. Rondo would've to pay the difference to that company if he were to decide to make a number switch.

Mmm, if ESPN said it, it must be true.

pierce's number will be retired for sure and kg and allen might as well if they win another championship. However, in hindsight we have retired too many numbers.I'd say cousy, hondo, bird and russell are sure things and after that it gets a bit dicey. loscutoff probably not and nelson probably not. Heinsohn I would say yes. sharman -no

I can see Pierce's number being retired for sure. I'm not sure either Garnett or Ray deserve to have their numbers retired. Something has to be said for the number of seasons you've played with one franchise. Neither Garnett nor Ray were with Boston during the mediocre years as Pierce has. He more than any current Celtic player deserves this acknowledgment.

On the other hand, perhaps, Garnett's number will be retired by Minnesota while Milwaukee could retire Ray's number. Then too, Shaq has a desire to see his number retired by the Lakers since he feels that's the franchise where he has had his most success as a player. The case is interesting for Ray. Garnett's name is synonymous with Minnesota so they should be the only ones to retire his number.
