With the win still fresh, Calhoun gripped the podium and reflected on the milestone. He thought back to his rascal days, times he says he ran with a rough crowd in Dorchester and South Boston, Mass., and recalled a life lesson from his father. The mouth, this time, improved his image.
"You're always going be judged by the company you keep," Calhoun said. "Looking around at that list, I'm really happy to be in that company."
Knight and Smith, Rupp and Phelan, Krzyzewski and Sutton. Each had experienced a day like this before. Perhaps none felt the emotions of it as much as Calhoun. He shared a daytime telephone conversation with Taliek Brown, the point guard on the second of his two national championship teams.
