Joe Smith wasn`t really an option...

Smith pretty much confirmed last night that, while the Celts would have been an intriguing option, it would have been difficult not to return to the Cavaliers, with whom he had his heart broken by the C’s in the playoffs.

“But, yeah, it would have been real hard (to pick the C’s over Cleveland), especially if things would work out where we would have to face each other again (in the postseason). That would have definitely been hard, because I developed some friendships on this team. We did some good things last year and took these guys to a Game 7. It would have been real difficult for me to put on the green jersey and then have to face these guys in the playoffs.”

“I actually thought that deal was already set,” said Celts coach Doc Rivers. “That’s why we were so cautious about it. We kind of knew what was going to happen.”

With the C’s needing size, they needed a commitment. Kevin Garnett called Smith to check in and take his temperature, but Smith wasn’t tipping his hand.

Asked if he suspected that Smith’s agent might have had a hand in directing his client back to Cleveland, Rivers said, “Yeah, with all of the dragging that was going on. And then we thought, ‘What the hell is going on.’ ”

Meh. i don't expect him to now say "I am really disappointed I am not a Celtic." "I wanted to wear green my entire life." or "I wish things had turned out differently."

If Cleveland had gotten Mikki, Joe Smith would be saying how it would be difficult to pass on playing with the Celtics and his buddy KG.

Wait. It would've been more difficult to face Cleveland in the playoffs, if Smith were a Celtic, than it would to stomach the fact that Cleveland traded you... Friends aside, Smith sounds like a loyalist to a franchise he was only a player for twenty-seven games.

I am happy with the Moore signing, he will add more to the C's than Smith

Danny did a great job. He knew or predicted Smith wouldn't be an option here, so he took the initiative to get the next best option bought out in Sacramento. I'd rather have Moore than Gooden to be honest and I don't like what it would've taken to get Smith back in a trade. I was getting the feeling that when we went after Moore that Smith wasn't going to be an option. That either he wasn't getting bought out or he only wanted to go to Cleveland.

I've really been arguing the contrary for a while, but it's nice to see some evidence for this - kind of makes me feel better about missing out on him.

Very happy with Moore. Smith is a better player but Moore is providing what we need.

I think the Cavs won the battle for the better backup big man but we may have won the war by picking up Marbury.

Yes, but I also think Moore is perfectly paired with Powe, and they'll become a stronger pair off the bench the more they play together. And Marbury has the capability to make good use of them offensively, too.
