I have seen it too....

Perkins is averaging 8.2 ppg. Almost a point and a half more than last year, and almost twice his average two years ago. The reason he's scoring more, including double digits in every game so far in March, is actually a result of what he's NOT doing. He's not bringing the ball down every time he catches it.

It's been frustrating to watch Perkins for the past 5 years. The bad habits have been hard for him to break. You could see the potential in him to be a solid double-double guy, if only he'd do some simple things. For years, he ducked into a crouch every time he caught the ball down low so he could try to power his way to the basket. His attitude was "dunk everything." Which, for a guy his size, worked in high school.

But in the pros, guys are too quick for that. They jump quicker. Their hands are quicker. They swat, and strip, and block.

Now, Perkins will often catch the ball at head level and go straight up with it. It's not fancy. It's not a dunk. But it's 2 points. And it's 2 points he wasn't scoring regularly before this year. To see Perk catch, pivot, and put the ball up off the glass in what seems like less than a second is such a thing of beauty. It's what we've been waiting 5 years for.

I have really enjoyed watching Perkins develop through the years. Every year he gets a little better and is still only 24. He isn`t the biggest talent but with his work ethic he is slowly turning into one of the best centers in the NBA.

If his basketball IQ were to ever improve, he would be a very solid player for years to come.

While Perkins has certainly improved in that area, I am going to have to say bull to the article.

Other reasons that point to increased scoring (and far out-weigh this regurgitated group-think):

1. Offensive rebounding: 12.0 OReb% (6th in NBA)
2. Increased minutes: 28.9 MPG (up 4.4 MPG from 2008)
3. Increased opportunity: 13.2 Usg-R (up 1.2 possessions used per 40 MP)

A bit off-topic but why are people who are alleged "experts" or supposedly "in the know" always 12-18 months late to the party? What compounds things is that, even after that 12-18 months has expired, "fans" will take another 4-6 months before they stop regurgitating what "experts" have been telling them for the previous year or so.

Perkins has a very good basketball IQ, imo. I don't know which game you are watching but that is last thing that comes to mind when I watch him play. Sure, he makes mistakes but a lot of those mistakes are from being in situations he hasn't experienced at the NBA level.

Perkins has a very advanced understanding of the game and his biggest problem, imo, is confidence because he hasn't been given consistent opportunity and touches.

Low basketball IQ post players are not as deft of passers off the box as Perkins. Low BBIQ players can't be the anchor for the league's best defense two years in a row.

Could you provide some evidence, be it anecdotal or otherwise, the leads you to believe that Kendrick Perkins has a low BBIQ?

The answer is quite simple......we should all just listen to you....you have all the answers....

I'm loving Perk's offensive improvement. Very true about rarely bringing the ball down anymore - an improvement from even earlier this season.

The one bad habit he still has, which is directly tied to his poor jumping ability is lack of continuation to the basket. When Perk catches the ball he's so afraid of getting blocked and/or stripped that he always pauses. That sometimes leads to more pausing, and dribbling, and, in many cases, disrupts the offensive flow of the team. I don't doubt that he's working on this with Clifford and at some point in his still young career will come in with improved moves to the basket that are more in the flow of things - catch, step and half, release.

I do find it encouraging that despite the baby steps on offense the man IS actually improving - slowly but surely. It's all bonus since his defense is really what matters.

What he needs to do is stop moving that damn knee everytime he set a **** pick..dude gets 3-4 offensive fouls on him almost every game because of that ish...ugh..

Perk has been a slow to develop project but he was RAW coming out of high school. He's a damned fine defensive center already which speaks volumes about where his head is, he is an extremely unselfish hardworking and dedicated individual. The progress he has made this year offensively with getting the ball up quickly has been great to watch, and he continues to show signs of improvement with his post game. I think at some point his back to the basket game is going to be really solid, he's getting more and more consistent with his baby hook and that little turn around jumper is starting to get closer and closer. He'd probably have come farther already if he got more looks in game situations, but there's only one ball and plenty of firepower around him. As Pogue mentioned, Perk is getting to be a pretty good passer out of the box too. He spots Ray and Paul around the perimeter nicely and usually sees double teams coming and gets rid of the ball fast and re-posts. He does need to get a little smarter with his physicallity, choosing his moments more wisely perhaps, but that'll come too if he just keeps making his slow steady progress.

perk has gotten better at not bringing the ball down. but really, his offense has improved because he has a LOT more confidence in his low-post moves. He has that little step back fade, the jump hook, and the power move now. But let's face it, Perk will never be an elite C. He just doesn't have the quickness or athleticism, and isn't so overwhelmingly large (ala Shaq) that he can make up for it.

and whoever said he has a low BBIQ is nuts. he has one of the highest BBIQ, esp on the defensive end, of anyone on the team.

I've always been a big Perk fan. Hard worker who gets the most out of his ability. I think Perk can be a Top 5 center in the NBA because he works at it and there are very few real centers in the game. The East couldn't find a center for the all-star game this year. Got to give the Celtics credit for taking the time to develop Perk over the last 5 years.

I've been intrigued by Perk's potential from the moment he first joined the Celtics. So it's nice to see his overall game start to come together. I've always believed he was capable of being a double/double player. That level is now clearly in his sights as he continues his progression. Perk's defense and toughness have always been assets, but now he's finding other ways to contribute. He is a very good passer as well, which is a very underrated aspect of his game. This team would not have achieved the results it has, without Perk manning the middle.

And the premise that Perk has a low b-ball IQ is absurd. There's a reason why he clicked playing alongside Garnett. And that's because Perk knows where to be on the floor in order to capitalize on the attention paid to KG by opposing defenses.

I commented on the thread, stated clearly why I disagreed with the premise of the article and supported my reasoning with both observed and statistical data. Do you need it spelled out any more clearly?

I then stated that it is unfortunate that most people who are considered experts are usually a year to a year and half late to the party. For instance, Steve Nash won the MVP over Dirk Nowitski and then the next year it was reversed. Most people who actually watch the entire NBA felt that the voting in the first season was wrong because Nowitski was more deserving. In the next year they felt the voting was wrong again and it was Nash who should have won. It is not an isolated example, either.

As far as your weak attempt at sarcasm, if I come off as a know-it-all it is because I have put in the time and work to research what i am talking about. If there is something I don't know or am unfamiliar with, I will say as much. I don't make off-base assumptions on a whim. I have already put the money in the bank. Unlike most, I like to think I can learn from other posters and that they can learn from me. I try to bring something to the table and if you don't like, just ignore my posts.

Poque puts together tons of well thought out posts, and backs them with statistics and all that good stuff. He never said that he knew everything and noone else has any perspective of value to him. He actually clearly said that he comes to this board to learn more. That's how people get smart, they learn more, rinse, repeat.

I also enjoy reading Poque`s posts. It doesn`t necessarily mean I agree with him all the time but every poster has their own opinion...

No. Do you actually read the post and understand implied meaning or do you just skim before posting? If my posts are a bit too nuanced, I would be more than happy to dumb them down for your benefit.

Let me be as explicit as possible. I am not saying that I am a know it all and, if it appears that way to someone with questionable reading comprehension skills, it is because I have already put in the time and effort to make sure I know what I am talking about.

I refuse to accept everything that is spoon-fed by the media and group-think. I want to know why things are the way they are and I want to learn how things can be improved. I don't claim to be smarter than the next person but I can guarantee you, that by effort and perseverance, I will out-work you. I find it insulting that a poster would poo-poo on another poster or his conclusions for obviously putting forth the effort.

Am I opinionated? Of course. People who work hard and are knowledgeable about a topic because of that industriousness tend to take pride in the fact. I have many hobbies but basketball is my true love. Others may be casual fans but that isn't me. I want to know everything there is to know about basketball and the NBA, in particular.

Inasmuch as I attempt to further that pursuit, there are always those dolts who treat the process of discovery and learning as a thing for geeks or nerds. When I encounter a dunderhead, who is unwilling to commit the effort and time to consider a situation from a different angle and perspective, I will speak down to them. I have zero respect for people who are too thick-headed and obstinate to either learn new things or, at the least, reexamine why they believe what they do.

Listen, most people have opinions. You happen to disagree with many of mine and that is fine. The difference between me and you is that I speak with certainty because I have put in the time and effort to examine and research what I am talking about. I also supply anyone reading what I am saying with background information, both from observed occurrences and via statistical data, so they can choose for themselves if they want to look at things from another perspective if our thoughts and opinions differ. You, well, you speak with certainty and your reasonings are the "because I said so" variety. It could very well be that I am full of it but there is zero doubt that I out-work you. To draw upon a basketball analogy, I am Leon Powe and you are Gerald Green.

Others post their opinions on this board too. It has become fashionable around here to spout opinions and not to be held accountable for what you are saying. You and others like to throw out the "fairweather fan" bit quite a lot when you disagree with someone. Which does nothing to further intellectual discourse. It would be very helpful if you actually attempted to provide reasoning for casting such accusations, btw. In such cases, is it just that you are unwilling to commit to backing up your own opinions or are you just being lazy?

This site is purportedly the "intersection of business and basketball." If you are only looking for someone who will parrot everything you say and think, go talk to yourself in the mirror. On the other hand, if you want to have an intellectual discussion about basketball, I am more than willing to engage anyone on this site. With that being said, if that is what you decide to do, ensure you know what you are talking about and that you have data, be it anecdotal or otherwise, to back up what you are saying. If that is too much work for you, stay in the shallow end of the kiddie pool. Or, continue trolling like you do here on the Celtics board because that is super productive.

I find that many of your posts are lazy and show lack of effort. Which I find unfortunate because for someone who has allegedly been a fan since 1964 should be able to provide some insight other then how to avoid getting carpal tunnel from the abuse and misuse of the emoticons.

I am more than willing to engage in silly banter, intellectual discussion or anything in between. What I do not support is people who talk out their backside without providing proof for their assertions. I also think poorly of bullies and trolls. I called you and others out in another thread for piling on and attempting to bully those that you didn't agree with. Instead of, you know, actually having a discussion about why you disagreed.
