DOCTOR jack ramsay

Post#1 » by Red2 » Fri Mar 13, 2009 6:42 pm

Ok here goes my most non-sensical post ever. Dr. Jack bugs me. A guy who insists on being called DOCTOR when he makes his living analyzing basketball games is either an insufferable egotist or a d bag or both. What exactly is he a doctor of? If it's so freaking important how come he's not practicting whatever it is he earned a doctorate in?never has one coach gotten more out of an ok career than DOCTOR jack ramsay. Why you ask am I busting on the Doctor? well it's because he's swallowed the laker koolaid and is drooling all over them. According to the DOCTOR the Lakers played the best basketball of any team this year when they recently beat the Spurs. How can he say that? Has he seen all of the games? Other than being fortunate enough to coach bill walton to a title what exactly has Jack Ramsasy ever done to earn the elevated status that he appears to have. WHo made him the king of plaid pants anyhow? Please DOCTOR jack, just go away and retire already.

Red, listen I'm with you on disliking the guy (ever since publicly outing the Celts after his son-in-law quit on us). But, he has a doctorate in education - something that is definitely tied to coaching, and is the 11th winningest coach in NBA history. Dr. Jack is a nickname that stuck - I don't hold it against him.

I myself have a PhD in organic chemistry, inarguably a more respected and harder degree to get than a PhD in **** Education (education departments on college campuses are the least scholarly and least respected amongst other departments, hands down...)...and I NEVER go around calling myself "Dr." or insisting others call me that...how pretentious an arsehole this guy is to do that (I've known other people in life who have done this as well and every one of them is a pretentious arsehole, case closed). Unless you're an MD (like my dad), you don't deserve anyone calling you Dr...

Dr. Jack sucks, anyway. I've never liked the guy, even before the whole thing with O'Brien...

Umm... ok, shall we call you Dr. Inadequate? I mean, come on. Essentially an "his degree isn't as rigorous as mine" and a "unless you're the equivalent of my Dad" sounds a lot like jealousy. It really has little to do with Jack Ramsey. Have you ever heard him correct someone and say, "Um, that's Dr. Jack Ramsey."

Based on this, I guess I should stop calling my beloved dead grandfather "Doc" for being just a veterinarian, especially considering that the name was given to him by "lowly" farmers.

Poo poo...

^No man, a vet should deserve to be called Doc, too, I agree with that.

But to insist on being called "Dr." with a degree in EDUCATION is a little disingenuous...what are most people gonna think? That he's a medical (human or animal) doc, not a frickin' teacher!

Except that the "original" doctors were teachers-- not medicine men and healers. The word itself comes from the Latin noun "docre" which, surprise, means teacher.

You must really have a bee in your bonnet that Julius Erving was called "Dr J." or that a Mr Pibb clone has the audacity to call itself "Dr Pepper". I mean, that is just carbonated water with prune extract and high fructose corn syrup. They have disgraced the entire medical profession!

Except that medical doctors weren't even the first to be recognized as doctors. In light of that information, who is to say that the healers weren't the pretentious dickwads that felt the need to have a special title?

As to Dr Jack, I recognize what he has done in the past and can respect that. Nowadays, though, he is employed by ESPN which means he has a platform to voice his displeasure and bias with a franchise that he felt unfairly treated in his son-in-law. Take his words with a grain of a salt.

I never agreed with him at all, now that I can remember. But if he wished, I would call him Doctor.

Also...what is our coaches nic name? Perhaps we should go back to Glenn Rivers?

In most countries outside of America it is only considered respect to call someone Doctor when they have achieved that degree.

In this case it's a nickname that stuck.

As the poster above me said... at least this one sorta makes sense.

He earned a doctorate, so he can be called a doctor.

I am still trying to figure out why anyone would waste any amount of time caring about something so trivial as this.

Well.. we have perhaps the best team in the NBA. Nothing to complain about. So the regular season has become a mini off-season.

Celtic board 2009.. waiting for the playoffs.
