We need a roster exemption!

Caught the end of the game, not bad...the 2007 Celtics beat the 2008 Heat!
It seems like we could get a roster exemption now for a random D-league big man, just to get another body - THIS is the kind of situation where exemptions get handed out.

Rivers said. Asked about being granted an injury exception by the NBA, Rivers said, "I don't think we can get it, honestly. They are very difficult to get. We couldn't get one with Grant Hill when I was in Orlando. Kind of gun-shy asking - we were turned down twice with him. But it's not like these guys are going to be out for long, so I don't think we would get it, anyway.

Now I'm going to say it in a more matter of fact way, so the rumor can start. Antoine Walker is coming back to Boston.

Except the league would find a way to rationalize NOT giving it to the Celtics. Remember, we're still the only team who got 0% salary cap relief when TWO of our players died...TWO....so Stern would find a way to **** the C's again...

Do you think we should have gotten cap relief for Len Bias, who didn't live long enough to sign a contract or count against the cap?

I'm sure had it happened to any other team, they would have gotten another draft pick or something as compensation...we got NOTHING...

I think the reporter's question was misphrased and Doc misunderstood it - I think he is talking about an injured player salary cap exception such as one gets when a player is out for the year. None of our guys are out for long enough or have big enough salaries for this to help (I suppose we could try to get one for Scal or TA, but 1/2 of their salary is barely minimum.)
A roster exemption is not granted for a one player, it's granted for a rash of injuries that leaves the team shorthanded. The fact that he said "we couldn't get one for Grant Hill" makes me think he misunderstood the question (or he correctly understood a very stupid question that didn't have anything to do with a roster exemption.)

And to clarify, I am talking about getting an exemption to acquire a big body d-leaguer to provide 6 fouls on a 10 day contract. Not a bought out or retired veteran FA to use for the rest of the year and playoffs!!

Channeling CThug..
MY SOURCES over AT THE GARDEN HAVE TOLD ME THAT none other than MR. ANTOINE WLAKER WAS IN TOWN YESTERDAY TAKING A PHYSICAL AND he could be in uniform as early as SATURDAY @ MEMPHIS!! He WOULD IMMEDIATELY FILL THE ROLE OF VETERAN leader and main LOW POST OPTION.

It always bugs me how imprecise the media is regarding transactions and cap rules. They never know the difference between salary cap and luxury tax; renounced vs not tendered; and in this case no idea between an injured player cap exception and a roster exemption for an extra player; etc etc. But sometimes fans get these things awfully mixed up also.

I totally agree. WEEI is the worst at this. They don't understand cap/salary rules for any of the major sports. For so called "sports experts" they know very little about the nuances of the rules. These slakers need to start doing their homework. I guess a couple of hours a day on RealGM for a 5 years will do that for you.
