OT: I doubt A.I. will ever be on a team that wins a title

Post#1 » by campybatman » Thu Apr 2, 2009 5:34 pm

Because he's coming off somewhat as a prima donna here. That isn't good. So, his prerequisite is that he'll have to be a starter for your team. See, a lot of the contenting teams don't need him at either guard positions and if they've an interest. It's as a role player. It'll be the non playoff teams that could roll the dice and sign him this off season in an effort to sell tickets with him as a starter. I don't think this is the right kind of attitude to have if you're Iverson. Not now and not at his age. I would think winning is more important than whether or not you start or not. If your minutes are the same. What difference does it make? I'm real curious to see where Iverson ends up leading into next season.

I'm still a fan, but, again, this isn't the right attitude to have entering free agency. He should know that. How much is an aging, undersized shooting guard worth in free agency these days? I mean you could argue that he didn't deserve to start in the All-Star game this season.

Iverson returned to action this past weekend after missing 16 games with a back injury, and coach Michael Curry has used him off the bench the last three games.

"I'm in a position now that I've never been in my whole life," Iverson said. "It's harder than I thought it would be. With the back injury, I have to sit out at the start, then go in, then sit again. It's tough to really get going. I take my hat off to the guys who can come off the bench and be effective. It's tough for me. I'm struggling with it."

"I'd rather retire before I do this again," Iverson said. "I can't be effective playing this way. I'm not used to it. It's tough for me both mentally and physically. If I'm able to go out there, I should be able to get it done and I can't right now. It's my fault. I have to be able to overcome the adversity and do what I have to do. I just have to find a way to get it done. Not being 100 percent makes it harder and you can see that I'm not 100 percent."

Good points raised from this article.

Iverson's career has seemed to take a backseat to his aging and beat up body, and the Pistons have seemed to join him. That was until Rip Hamilton re-entered the starting lineup.

Iverson has never been a player who played from the bench at all. From his days as a quarterback at Bethel High School, Iverson is used to being the focal point of every offense and defense.

But, there was always one knock the critics and haters continually bashed against Iverson's head: he is a selfish player who can't play within a system.

There was no situation that could expose that point like joining a Detroit team who epitomized a system. Every player on that team fit into that system like squares of a quilt.

Going back to Iverson's Georgetown days, he always had the ball in his hands and was able to create his own shots and offense at will. With another trigger-happy guard playing alongside him in Victor Page, he and Iverson shot whenever they wanted to.

Guys such as Boubacar Aw and Sheikh Ya-Ya Dia were happy to rebound their sloppy seconds, and those teams were formidable because of Iverson and Page, but never made considerable noise.

Meanwhile, players like Richard Hamilton and Ray Allen made championship strides in the same conference with the Connecticut Huskies.

Meanwhile, the media is buzzing about what will happen to the Answer when he returns from injury, barring the possibility that his back is worse than anticipated and missing significant time.

Curry has no choice, clearly. Hamilton stays in, Iverson out.

Iverson playing from the bench? It seems like the unthinkable, and you wonder can Iverson put his past achievements and ego aside to help the team win.

Will he?

We simply don't know, because we've never seen Iverson this way. He's always been the most effective offensive option for any team he's played for, Iverson has always been that entity with the ball in his hands who defies conventional basketball wisdom.

Barely a six-foot guard who can often score on anyone. A career scoring average of 27.1 ppg and 6.2 apg. League MVP. Iverson's credentials speak for themselves.

Does his basketball character speak just as loudly? Is he willing to age as a basketball star playing a different role? Does he want to win at all costs, even if he isn't involved the same way he's used to?

We will soon find out. "The Answer" will be the answer to the Pistons season and playoff hopes.

Besides, he's playing for a contract somewhere next season.

I said this back when the celtics were trying to get him back in the day. Iverson is the best player in the league that you DO NOT want to have on your team. You're exactly right, any contending team doesnt have a need for him to come in and be the man, so the only teams that will want him are young unproven teams. That said, it is impossible to build a championship team around an undersized shoot first point guard - even attempting to do so seems like you're doing everything ass-backwards.

Absolutely. As great as he's been statistically, he's a loser on and off the floor...he will never win a title and this latest tiff just reinforces the perception that he's all about AI and everyone else be damned...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

I think a lot of Celtics fans like him from a talent standpoint but understand that if you want to win a championship. He isn't the player you trade for. I'm an Iverson fan and even I didn't want him on this team fearing that what happened in Denver would happen in Boston. That's why I'm glade that Garnett was acquired via a trade after the acquisition of Ray Allen. I didn't want to go through a mediocre season of Pierce and Ray playing a lot of minutes and not making the playoffs or making the playoffs and not going far. With Garnett, it forces you [Pierce and Ray] to make sacrifices in your game. Ditto for him as well. But, in Denver, you didn't really have a stabilizer to put a wedge between the scoring of Iverson and Carmelo. Who Camby? He isn't exactly Garnett now is he?

I'm not a fan, but to be fair Its not really clear if his issue is coming off the bench or coming off the bench injured.

I like Iverson....dude is ridiculously good...yeah he has his ego problems...and really isn't a team player, and he proved that when he left Philly...but I don't blame him for complaining about a bench on that Pistons team..they suck at the moment..nobody is playing great ball there..they are 7th seed in the east...he is better than all 5 players on their starting line-up IMO...Detroit with a Iverson, Rip, Prince, Sheed, Maxiell line-up could make noise in the playoffs...bring him to Boston, Cleveland and LA and he would never whine about being bench..but on that 'downhill falling' Detroit squad AI should start..or at least get 35 minutes off bench..him playing 18 minutes like he did the other day is beyond me...he is one of my all time favorite basketball players so im ready to take some heat for him here...bring it on...

Iverson CLEARLY will never win a title, UNLESS he accepts a lesser role. He will never win a title as a top option offensively. Never ever ever. He could win a title if he shut his damn mouth and became the most dynamic 6th man in basketball. Don't get why he can't accept a role like that. Detriot is not a city for him.

I like AI's talent - he is underrated in some ways (on message boards that is). But his prima donna attitude is a turnoff. You have to adapt your game to the team. Who would have thought that Marbury would turn out to be a good soldier in comparison. <g>

Detroit doesn't know what they want from AI and AI doesn't know how to give any team bench production.

He COULD be an amazing bench player, but obviously he cant adapt his game at this point in his career

still a big fan of the guy, this season he has just been an afterthought though

Some good points are raised in this article on Iverson. But, it doesn't mean that it'll happen. It could make sense, though.

Iverson's game is PERFECT for being a dynamic 6th man. But I agree it isn't clear whether he is upset about being less than 100% or whether he is upset about not starting or the minutes or what. He just came back from injury, so 18 minutes might just be to bring him back slowly...

he could be a great 25+ minute back up at the 1 and 2 for a contender (hell even us) with his skill set...

this off season will be interesting... i think the Bobcats might take the risk with him, but if no team is willing to give him a starting role, surely he wouldnt retire over the chance to be a 6th man on a championship team

The dude cannot even check his ego enough to **** PRACTICE ("we talkin' bout PRA-tice?") and we're supposed to be surprised he doesn't want to come off the bench? :censored:

Would be cool to see him back in Philadelphia. Because I don't believe Andre Miller signed an extension.

iverson is not the culprit when it comes to detroit losing games. all you have to do is watch them to see what the problem is. they dont have a good low post presence, on offense or defense. wallace is now an inconsistent perimiter player. mcdeyes is effective for certain stretches, but he isnt the difference maker on the glass and on D that a Perkins or Verejao is.

Stuckey, Iverson, and Hamilton are forced to play like ballers from the perimiter for Detroit to win. They need to trade Rasheed for a young big that can play some D. Either that or draft picks.

Apparently, Iverson's done for the regular season and a return in the playoffs looks unlikely.

My problem is he bailed on his teammates right before the playoffs beause he won't take a lesser role to start things off....not saying circumstances down the road might give him a greater role...he just bails on them...... 8-)

The point about Sprewell is valid.

If the Celtics fail to repeat as champs -- and if A.I. were willing to take a short-term deal to chase the ring that has eluded him -- Iverson to Boston is not nearly as outlandish as it sounds.

Iverson would almost certainly have to accept the bench role he has repeatedly said he'll never accept again, which is a sizable impediment. But that would probably be the biggest impediment here.

Why are you so sure that the Celts would have no interest in a short-term arrangement? Weren't you just as sure that Boston would never sign Marbury?

We dipped into the archives to find this paragraph from an old Weekend Dime in December 2006, shortly after Iverson's request to be traded in Philadelphia was made public and when the Celts had no idea that Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen would be arriving months later: "Boston's Paul Pierce, sources say, still wants Iverson as a teammate and remains hopeful that his team has a shot. Danny Ainge, meanwhile, is said to be a longtime Iverson fan, with AI apparently possessing the Michael Jordan brain type and with the Celts' personnel boss known to be a big believer in brain-typing."

The latest Iverson drama accelerated to this latest fork in his career Wednesday night in New Jersey, when AI announced after his third game as Detroit's sixth man that he'd rather retire than come off the bench next season.

You'll notice that pretty much no one is treating it as an April Fool's joke.

That's because it's not hard to imagine the famously proud/stubborn Iverson following Latrell Sprewell into early retirement rather than play for less of a role and less of a contract than he thinks his stature deserves. Not hard at all.

"I don't think AI has much of a market … if any," said one Western Conference executive. "Maybe some team that wants to get a ticket-sale bump. But a serious club, no way. His act is tired and even in his best years, I don't think he was great enough to put up with all the BS he put teams through."

Said another decision-maker in the West: "If he only wants to start, his career may be over."
