Well, this now ends all speculation about Garnett possibly returning for the eastern conference finals.

It's time to move on...

Any lingering speculation regarding a return by Kevin Garnett in these playoffs should be coming to an end soon. According to sources, Garnett is seeking a date to have surgery on his right knee sooner rather than later.

“The knee is hurting him too bad right now,” one source said. “He just can’t play.”

According to another person with knowledge of the situation, Garnett sought advice from non-Celtic medical sources on remedies that could allow him to play through the end of this season. And there were points in recent weeks when it seemed the program of rest and rehab were working and that Garnett would be able to go. But when the soreness returned and increased, the options went away.

Contrary to statements from the Celtics that surgery was not discussed in the Garnett case, word is the team did consider it when Garnett’s right knee suffered its most serious twist in Utah on Feb. 19.

The subject of whether surgery could alleviate the problem was raised, but rest looked like the better option - particularly since having a procedure on the knee could have ended Garnett’s season.

Garnett was said to be alternately confident and pessimistic on his chances to return, but he told teammates Wednesday he was probably done.

Speaking only for me......This answers my thoughts. The medical staff and KG did what they had to do to try to come back and it just didn't pan out.

“Injuries like this are really a tricky thing,” one medical person who has worked on NBA players said. “Most of the time you just need to rest it and let the area calm down, but sometimes it’s different.”

As I had posted earlier rest in this case was the better option...surgery the last because KG's season would be over....and in some cases if rushed too soon a players career could be over.

That it wasn’t a foregone conclusion (for weeks, as some suggested) is supported by the fact Garnett worked out Thursday.

“We talked late (Wednesday) night and he said, ‘Let me come in and work out,’ ” coach Doc Rivers said. “He said, ‘I’m really worried.’ And that scared the (expletive) out of me. But even then we thought he would be OK.”

Also....unlike others here on this board who would want you to think the C's were for whatever reason were lying to the fans.....they, the C's were telling you everything....being upfront.

Now the board gets the facts............. no comments........where are the Weekend Doctors now ??????

Where are the posters who said the team lied to us.

He needs to play on it anyways.
They didn't do enough.


They did what they were supposed to do and it didn't heal in time. That's it. The medical staff and Garnett's doctors were on this from the get go and this is what was worked out....for the best of the team and the player, down the road.

Surgery and we get a new and improved KG next season.

I for one can't wait.....just a few months.....now the team has to go get # 18 without him.

Now the herald is saying that Garnett was on the practice floor walking and dribbling along the court.

So, does Rivers think that Garnett's overrating in terms of wanting to seek a date for surgery, immediately? I don't get it... If Garnett's experiencing more intense pain, perhaps this is a sign that there's more to this injury as the Mannix article implied last week.

Though none of the involved was offering any comment, the simple exercise came after Doc Rivers commented to the Herald today that he and the Celtics would like Garnett to hold off on surgery to his right knee.

It was reported in today’s editions of the paper that Garnett is looking to set a surgery date soon, and sources indicated again that he is moving in that direction. But Rivers said there should be no rush to have the procedure.

The fact that the Celtics are all but ruling Garnett out for the postseason makes several trainers wonder if the injury is more serious than they are letting on.

"There's probably a tear there," a trainer said. "I have a hard time seeing how a player with the pain tolerance of Garnett isn't able to play with a strain. Especially when you consider he has missed so much time with the injury already."

Even more clarification, I take it.

“He’s thinking about (surgery), and it looks like that’s the way he wants to go,” Rivers said in response to the Herald story, “but I think he might wait. We think he should wait, because you never know.

“It’s hard because one day he looked great and you think he’s definitely coming back, and then you see him run and you realize he just can’t play.”

That’s where he and the Celtics have been the last few days, but Rivers was weighing the benefits when he advised a holding pattern on the surgery.

“We would tell him to do it right now if it meant that he couldn’t be ready for the start of next year if he waited,” Rivers said. “But the recovery on this won’t be that long, so our thing is just wait.”

Rivers also indicated yesterday a belief that the procedure Garnett will undergo won’t solve the issue.

“From what we’ve understood, the surgery has nothing to do with the injury,” Rivers said. “Now they may get in there and find out that the bone spur was rubbing against that tendon and that’s what was causing the problem. But they can’t see that until they go in there. From what we’ve been told, it’s just going to take rest for the tendon problem to calm down.”

Gay! The playoffs now seem pointless knowing for SURE KG ain't returning.

It's now, just waiting for us to be eliminated ... I'll still cheer them on, but this was our best chance to repeat and win another title. It'll be even harder next season.

Garnett's injury is unfortunate... And Boston fans must be realistic on this. However, I'm still a Celtic fan and won't become disinterested now that the team's best defensive player and vocal leader is out and done for the remainder of this season. I mean it shows a lot of character, unity and determination to press on in the playoffs. Boston has more to lose from fans by giving up. And the players really shouldn't do that to the fans and especially to Garnett. He doesn't need to feel guilty for being sidelined. And that's what they'll do by giving up and conceding the eastern conference title to the remaining teams. You don't maintain or gain the respect of your peers and fans by doing so. Again, I feel that reaching the eastern conference finals is being realistic. They're still the second seed... All they've to do is play like it.

If Garnett attempts to comeback... He'll end up like Randy "The Ram" Robinson. Instead, live to fight another day (season).

I'm siding with Doc here. Wait to have the surgery. The recovery time for the surgery is a short one. He could get it done in June and still be fine for training camp.

We don't even know if this is an injury that could actually get worse from him playing on it. If that is the case, and we would get a 70% Garnett with no chance of doing structural damage, then he should play if he is comfortable doing that. It's not my body so I won't criticize him either way.

I just think Doc urging him to delay the surgery is telling. That's huge.

I just hope the surgery goes well and he'll be ready to play next season. I still feel they can defeat the Cavs at home based on the previous game's indication and have a slim shot at winning the series if they could get lucky in Cleveland. Obviously they may not end up playing the Cavs anyways, but I'm still trying to be optimistic.

Kevin Garnett will delay knee surgery in the hopes that his strained tendon heals enough for him to play in the postseason.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers said the planned surgery will remove bone spurs in KG's knee and has nothing to do with his strained tendon. "They may get in there and find out that the bone spur was rubbing against that tendon," Rivers said. "But they can’t see that until they go in there." The odds of Garnett returning could shrink dramatically if the Celtics lose again at home in Game 2 on Monday.

When Garnett was spotted at the practice facility Doo and Lacerte, I think it was simply a routine workout for him and nothing more. The media caught wind of it and made it a bigger story than it was.

I don't believe Garnett wants to come back, if the pain's too much to endure. I'll guess that he believes that his teammates can do just as well without and and he might have told them that. Surely, he would if he could but I think he knows that he has to shut it down. Don't fight it... You aren't going to win in this. Injuries have a way of getting you back for not listening...

With all the injuries mounting up and trouble beating Chicago AT HOME, I, one of the biggest Celtic homers ever, am starting to despair...

If you allow a lesser team to think they're as good as you when they aren't if you're healthy. Things could go wrong for you if you're Boston. Injuries aside, I wouldn't have thought this series would be tied after two games if you consider Boston still has Pierce, Ray and Rondo to Chicago's Rose. Maybe you can add Gordon for Chicago... But, I wonder how much more of a challenge for Boston would this match-up be had the Bulls not lost Deng. He defends Pierce as well as anyone who defends him well.

I believe Boston fans will find their confidence in the team if Boston can grab back home court advantage in this series by winning game three at Chicago like they won game three at Detroit last season. Same situation... Hence, why I'm not sweating Chicago. Boston's better than most teams at winning on the road.

Bulls are a good team but that win in OT was just a luck.

Perhaps, describing them as a lesser team was poor word choice. I mean less in comparison to Boston, the second seed. Yes, Chicago is a talented team and should remind some fans of Atlanta in the playoffs last season. However, in my opinion, Boston's playing down to the competition as oppose to the competition being that good. During the regular season, Pierce said at least once or twice that the team still hasn't played their best basketball. Boston fans are still waiting...

I agree bonsai...they *are* playing down to the competition, something they've been known to do from time to time...Chicago is good, no doubt, but they are 7-seed good, and that's it...
