Rondo a "role player?"

Post#1 » by elrod enchilada » Wed Apr 29, 2009 12:37 pm

"I'm not trying to go outside my role," Rondo said after game 5 against the Bulls. "I'm still one of the role players on the team."

Role Player?

Back in the mid-80s Greg Kite said the success of the Celtics was that the team was made up of role players, and everyone simply performed their needed role and did not try to do anything else or go outside their limitations.

Someone asked Kite what Larry Bird's role was.

"Oh," said Kite. "His role is to be MVP."

Man the Rondo/Perk press conference was so goofy. Rondo was dressed like a 30's style Al Capone gangster, and Pekins kept scowling (although he did smile for the first time ever).

LOL how did I miss this? Rondo has looked like the leader in most of these games though.

I think what Rondo's implying is that he's a "role player" in the sense that the team belongs to the veterans, the Big Three: Pierce, Garnett and Ray. I"m sure that Rivers and Pierce tell him regularly that he's the point guard that runs the ship for this team. We're a better team when you're at your best in these games. I mean Rondo has already established his role on the team and that's to be the starting point guard. Now, he's beginning to realize that not only that, but he's gradually becoming one of the perimeter starting point guards in the league. He just has to keep playing his game, and improving in areas that are flaws. In my opinion, Ainge must keep him and Perkins together. Because they represent the two most important positions you've on your team. Boston is already ahead of other teams in that regard. This is, in part, thanks to Garnett's presence on the team and positive influence on both players. For that reason, Garnett's worth his high salary even more so.
