Brian Scalabrine

Post#1 » by Fencer reregistered » Tue May 5, 2009 7:58 am

1. Scal had a +22 tonight, in a game the Celtics lost. Only two other Celts were in the plus zone (Pierc +9, House +4). That's a huge gap.

2. Nobody should be angry any more at Ainge for signing Scal. It's OK to still politely disagree. But Ainge's move obviously was NOT a stupid one.

3. I was impressed with Scal's full-court pressure on Turkoglu. Why? Because he showed great technique at a skill he uses very, very rarely (at least in games). The guy really is sound in his fundamentals. He's also calling out defenses, elevating (slightly) for rebounds, making passes, sinking shots, and doing pretty much anything one could ask of him except dribbling.

4. That also means I noticed Scal covering Turkoglu. I also noticed Pierce covering Shard. Is that simply the matchup when those four players are in? It would make sense, as Pierce has at least some chance of matching Shard's quickness.

5. Given his command of the fundamentals and his agreeable personality, is Scalabrine going to be a coach some day? A broadcaster?

Scal was absolutely brilliant! If everybody played with the same effort we would win the game without a problem...

Absolutely. Scal is smart, knows the system well and is a good communicator.

He played superb defense and we'll need him to be this good throughout the series in order for us to win. Since BBD is not a good wing defender and TA will not play much, if any, it's up to Pierce and Scal to control their shooters. What Rat gives on D is a bonus.

I have always said Scal is a heady player. He doesnt make many low basketball IQ plays. I thought he was fantastic tonight.

Scal looked bad for a few moments but overall played very well. The C's, for the first time, looked tired...

Enh. It was still a terrible signing. It's short money now and he's hitting his 3's, so that makes it ok now, but I don't think it justifies the contract in the first place.

And he makes plenty of low IQ plays...

If Doc still have some brain left, he should start Scal on game 2. With him starting, we could be 4-1 against the Magic.

Scal can defend Tork/Rashard better than PP or BB.

Scal was really good last night. He was for a long time the Celtics whipping boy but he has redeemed himself this year. New whipping boy = Tony Allen.

Magic fan here:

It was interesting that Scalabrine and Lewis were their respective team's best statistical player with regards to ±. This must mean that they were not often on the court at the same time. This is curios given that Scalabrine is probably the only Celtic that can guard Lewis.

It was also curios for me that only when Scalabrine was on the court could Boston push the ball and get more movement. When I think Air-Scalabrine, I do not think "ball distributor." But there you go.

It will be interesting to see if Scalabrine starts in game 2. Especially as Davis was -15 in his ± stat line.

This doesn't surprise me; whenever we've had trouble guarding mobile big men capable of dribbling into the paint, posting up, or sticking the outside shot, Scal is the first man assigned to the job.

You can dump on the guy all you want for whatever reasons (and boy did he receive his share his first few years here), but I'd rather have him on the court guarding Hedo or Rashard over anyone else we have right now...he's quite nimble for his size and makes smart plays, knows his limitations, etc.

I think it's the headband...

Well...many people were saying that he should have started, so it really didn't surprise me any. Scal is our best matchup against Lewis and Turkoglu. Tony could play well against Turk, but we'd have to involve him offensively more, since his biggest advantage is foot-speed. Hopefully Doc starts Scal for game 2.

What did surprise me was that we ended up with vintage Stephon Marbury in the first half, and he didn't play at all in the 2nd.

Now that it is "cool" to like Scal, can we round up all the people who hated on him? Remember all the folk calling Danny a fool for signing him? Remember all the brain doctor jokes? Well, having the brain type of Jordan and Scal myself, I was able to see Scal would be an asset to the team. Maybe I, or someone, should make some ribbons of support people who never ragged on Scal can put in their profile.

Hem, Scal is still wildly overpaid and one of the worst in the league...it *was* a horrid signing, for that amount of $$ and length of contract...but he's been solid this season...
