OT: Report: Rasheed wants $8M or he'll retire

Post#1 » by campybatman » Tue May 5, 2009 5:35 pm

Yeah, do you still want to sign him? This tactic is rarely a good move for the player. Perhaps, we don't see Wallace or Iverson next season. If you remember, a similar report stated that Iverson desires to remain a starter or else.

SLAM contributor J. Gamble [making his debut with us next issue] hears from a close personal friend of Rasheed Wallace’s that unless Sheed gets $8 million to play next year, he’s going to retire. If that’s true, we’ve probably seen the last of Sheed in the NBA. SLAM

Rasheed has expressed an interest in playing for San Antonio or Dallas. I can see Cuban willing to pay Wallace if for a year. He has shown he isn't afraid to spend... Even if you already have Nowitzki and Dampier at the 4 and 5.

It's hard to read too much into these rumors, but if it is true I think Sheed best start to develop his golf game.

What about 7.5 mil? Will that do?

Aah, such strong love of the game.

Ask Sprewell how that stance works out...

I've kind of started thinking that he's become far too inconsistent to be worth the MLE.

$8 mil for a bench guy who doesn't bother to show up some games? Although I'd like to see the good Rasheed (i.e. I care about todays game) here, the bad Rasheed (I think I'll stand around in 3 point land jacking up garbage shots) would frankly frustrate me no end. Hope he enjoys his retirement.

The questions is whether he would disappear if he were here, or if it's a symptom of the disaaster season Detroit is having. But man it seems like the bad Rasheed is a frequent sighting this season. No way for 8 million. Not like we could give him that much anyway.

I thought that a signing is feasible with half or all of the MLE to sign R. Wallace. But, I don't think I've ever read where Ainge used all of the MLE on one player signing. So, if this is true, you can probably rule out Boston.

I've a feeling this is bogus, though. What financial advantage can be had by making it known (or intentionally leaking out) this information? Another media source later debunked the rumor that Wallace asked for a buyout from Detroit this season. If he and agent have any sense, they'll lay low and wait for contending teams to seek him out. If this is true, it might actually be the doing of the agent to gauge what Wallace's market is. If Dallas has no interest in Wallace, then I'm unsure who'll target him in the off-season.

Dunno, if its true he could well have played his last game, i dont think he'll give it away that easily (or quietly) though

Still chase him with MLE money, sure 8 mil is nice... but so is 5 mil when you get to a certain point in your career

If he does retire... chase the Birdman

Hmm, $8M for a 6'10" guy unwilling to play defense and just sit on the perimeter jacking up threes or the vet min on a 6'9" Celtic legend unwilling to play defense and just sit on the perimeter jacking up threes.

I dunno, it practically sells itself.

Anyways, given the right situation, I think he might get that $8M. When he's motivated he's still a solid starting power forward. Definitely think there are a few teams willing to give him 2-3 years at that rate. I don't know what his relationship with Brown is, but I think Charlotte would be an appropriate suitor. They've been looking for a power forward for a while.

I think if it came down to it, he'd take the MLE instead of retiring, but I expect someone to pay him. I have too many mixed opinions on him to say if I want him here or not.

Wallace does have a ring already. So, I don't doubt he could walk away from basketball today. It's just that the report sounds fishy. I'm waiting for a report to come out to contradict it. If Wallace is asking for that amount for one season. A team will pay it, I think. If I'm Ainge, you offer no more than the MLE and hope that the Celtic players can convince him to come to Boston. Maybe, he tries to sign with Denver to rejoin Billups. Who knows... What I do know is that there's always a market for big men. Hence, why I don't believe that Rasheed's done.
