Powe Hoping For February 2010 Return!

Post#1 » by BillessuR6 » Fri May 15, 2009 9:02 pm

Powe got some positive news. His surgically repaired left knee wasn't as damaged as previously thought, said Powe's agent, Aaron Goodwin. Powe had surgery May 5. He is an unrestricted free agent.

"[The doctors] said there was less damage in there than they thought there was," Goodwin said. "Obviously, he still did the reconstruction. But we still feel good about it. We're looking at an All-Star break return."

I thought he would be ready sooner than that! That is almost a whole year...Now, I am a bit doubtful about resigning him...I guess if rehab goes well we could sign him at the end of summer, maybe to some kind of a 2 year minimum deal with a team option...

Yeah this **** sucks. I thought he would be back by the start of the season..instead he is going to make it for only HALF the 2010 season..that sucks bad. We are getting him on the cheap though, so Powe will be a Celtic next year. I wonder if KG's surgery(if needed) will take that long to heal? I mean...no one expected Powe to be out for this long...ya'll think KG might be out long too??:(

I think this is still optimistic. I didn't expect a Feb 2010 return to be honest. Also, it is from his agent, who in the end, wants to build his client's value.

You are assuming that Powe will be a Celtic?

Why the heck would we sign a guy who won't be ready until February? That's stupid. It costs money and a roster spot. When he comes back, sure, let's sign him to a 10 day contract. But, to honestly sign a guy who can't play is silly.

Bad for Leon, but this is a business.

Yes, that is a good assumption that we will sign powe. It is not silly to sign him. It is the right thing to do and that is what the Celtics will do. He can have Mikki's spot on the roster. A smart business move would be to not sign a role player to big bucks over many years. Signing a guy for the minimum who is a class act is not a dumb for any business move. If anything we get him cheap and he will back in at old form.

I would hope that best case scenario he has confidence in his knee a few weeks before the playoffs start next year. The mental aspect is the hardest. If he comes back at all star break then it will be at least a month or so after that until he trusts his knee again.

Easy...easy....,this guy contributed a lot to a Celtics team. why not sign him a start with 400k (2009-10) while his knee resting and (800k 2010-11)on the 2nd year at team option.
He received salaries less what he got in 2008-09 seasons. G
Guys, Powe also have a family and I think celtics considered his contribution to the team.

Mikki Moore needs to go, and Danny needs to find someone to replace Powe - even though I think we resign him.

I'm glad Glen Davis is the main PF off the bench now - well I'm more glad he has taken that step because Powe will be out for a very long time. Davis has stepped up and played great.

I still see Rasheed Wallace as a perfect fit and by the time Powe does come back, we'll have to work him in slowly.

The benefits to signing Leon over an equally valuable player are:

1) It feels good, which is good for everybody's morale.
2) He's familiar with the system (although in practice that's his weak point).
3) If within two seasons he gets so valuable that it takes Bird Rights to retain him, they're available. (Ditto w/ one season and Early Bird, if the Cs want to use the MLE on other things.)

All of these are decent reasons. None is compelling.

I am not taking up a roster spot wiht a guy who is going to be out until February at the earliest. Case closed.

Celts can't afford to do that. Let's try and get Sheed with the MLE. Celts need length anyway.

There's still a strong chance that if you sign Powe to a minimum deal for two seasons that you'll be getting Powe's solid production at a discounted price for one season.

But it's going to be tough for Ainge to stick by Powe when it's clear that there needs to be some type of upgrade PF-C brought in and with it being unlikely that Powe will be able to give you even solid production next season.

Let's count roster spots again:

1. Perk
2. KG
3. Paul
4. Ray
5. Rondo
6. #2 center (PJ/POB/Mikki replacement)
7. #2 PF (perhaps Big Baby)
8. #5 healthy big (perhaps Scal)
9. #2 SF (perhaps Walker)
10. #2 SG (perhaps House)
11. #5 SG/SF (perhaps Tony)
12. #6 SG/SF (perhaps Giddens)
13. #2 PG (perhaps Starbury)
14. #3 PG (perhaps Pruitt)
15. Leon or somebody else
