OT: Washington and their fifth pick

No way I would take on Arenas' salary. It'll have to be either Jamison or Butler and Butler has the shortest (and lesser salary) of the two contracts. So, he's who I take back for the fifth pick from Washington.

Washington to Trade Out of 5th Pick?

There is speculation that the Wizards will look to move their 5th pick and trade down looking to dump a salary in the process. Washington has a ton of money locked up in Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler and would like to improve their cap situation in any way possible. They don't see this as being a strong draft or a player worthy of the 5th selection being available.

Would there be any way we could land both Butler/Jamison/#5?

Ray's salary is almost equal to those two combined, Washington would immediately be under the cap for 2010.

No way they give up Butler/#5/Jamison for Ray. We'd have to add Perk and Rondo for them to not hang up the phone and frankly Perk is the most important player on the Celtics because he lets us play Dwight Howard one one on.

I think the only guy you could get for that package would be Gilbert and I sure don't want to see him with the Celtics. The Wizards would be much better off just keeping Butler and Jamison and seeing what they can get with the 5th pick.

The "best" trade I could see is Ray Allen, Tony Allen, Gabe Pruitt for Caron Butler, Etan Thomas, DeShawn Stevenson, and number 5. They get out of the Thomas and Stevenson deals as well as Butler's deal. But again I don't see the Wiz moving Butler.

I only want Butler... But, a Jamison, Butler and Young for R. Allen, Scalabrine and T. Allen works. It'll probably take more than Boston's second round pick to get their fifth pick as well.

I would rather do a small trade to get Butler and the fifth pick, then trade the fifth pick to another team to help acquire a veteran center.

I guess I'm alone in this, but I would consider Ray for Arenas + #5.
As long as the doctors say Arenas's body can hold up for a few years.
Which is a huge "as long as".

Having watched him here in DC for a number of years I think Butler would be a GREAT addition to the Cs. He desperately wants to win, plays strong defense, can knock down the 3 and would be another UCONN player to go along with Ray. You could mix him in with PP and RA to help keep their minutes down. The only thing this does not do is solve the front court issues.

Errrr, how would we acquire him without giving up either PP or Ray?

I'd love to have Butler. But I doubt Wash trades him for anything but a awesome package.

Come on, obviously they're not going to include the #5 AND Butler or Jamison in the salary dump. It might be one or the other. I suppose they would consider dumping Arenas. They want to cut salary or avoid taking on a #5 pick's salary - not trade every asset they have in one fell swoop!!!

If they trade Butler or Jamison, then they are in complete rebuild mode - if they are in rebuild mode, they keep the #5 pick of course!

If they are going to get all this cap room and start over by trading Butler and/or Jamison, wouldn't they just keep the #5 pick? That wouldn't put that much of a dent in their salary cap.

That is a ridiculous scenario.

Latest scuttlebutt is Josh Howard to Wash for the 5th pick from ESPN Insider.

What big contract is Washington throwing into the mix? Because that's the main reason the Wizards want to deal the pick.

The Wizards made a huge mistake by signing Arenas to that ridiculous contract after his injuries and will regret it for the next few seasons. I can't imagine any team taking his contract at this point, and I'd be embarassed if the Celtics even looked into it.

Yep, Gilbert's way too injury prone. He's had like 3 surgeries already. He must have used some magic to get the Wizards to resign him. Arenas acted like he was giving them a deal.

Dallas might be a more appealing trade partner for Washington.

The Mavericks are said to be interested in the fifth pick and the prospect of drafting Jordan Hill.

The teams have made nice in the past, most recently in the swap that secured Jamison in 2004. The Mavericks also were kind enough to relieve the Wizards of Juwan Howard in 2001.

The Mavericks apparently are willing to part with either Jason Terry or Josh Howard to sweeten a potential deal. The Mavericks would be obligated to accept an expiring contract of the Wizards, the one belonging to either the Poet or Mike James.

The Wizards do have a number of bargaining chips: two expiring contracts, a No. 5 pick, Nick Young, Andray Blatche and one 7-footer, JaVale McGee or Brendan Haywood, depending on which center the Wizards would prefer to keep. The Wizards also have Jamison to shop if a franchise-altering deal becomes available.

Arenas, Butler and Jamison, no fault of theirs, never were able to see how far they could carry this franchise. That prospect has vanished now.

The chatter involving the Wizards is refreshing, seeing as how it conveys a modicum of hope. Washington Times

*Yawn* We've been fighting this rumor all day. Here's the REAL scoop:

About a week ago somebody on DX said that the Mavs wanted Hill. He then said that the last time the Mavs made a draft day trade it was with Washington for the #5 (Devin Harris) so he thinks that maybe they should call Washington again and he proceeds to make some suggestions as to what the deal could theoretically be. Then between yesterday and today, a hack at a local Washington paper (who has zero credibility with Wiz fans) repeats what was on DX but reports it as if the two teams are actually talking about it. By this afternoon ESPN is reporting it as a "rumor" and everyone on these boards thinks Josh Howard will be a Wizard. There's absolutely nothing to it and goes to show what happens when people who are supposed to be "journalists" use the internet as their source.

I would be absolutely SHOCKED if the Wiz were interested in Josh Howard. He duplicates Caron Butler and would have no place in our rotation. To try to force him in there would cause chemistry issues and we'd end up having to trade either him or Butler. So why even bother? Now if you're talking about a larger deal where Dallas gets the #5, Howard goes to a third team, and the Wiz get something else - maybe that's possible.

These points are also inaccurate, regardless of what you may have read on the "internets". Dumping salary IS NOT the organizations prime objective. Yes, they are in luxury tax land but they knew that when they re-signed Jamison and Arenas last summer. The organization believes that, when healthy, this is a contender in the East. The only reason this is even a discussion is because they had a down year last year. Had the Wiz made the playoffs nobody would be talking about them dumping salary.

I'll say this as plainly as I can: there will be NO salary dump. The #5 pick will either be used to select a player (probably Harden if he slips, possibly Curry) or traded for a veteran who can help now (but not Josh Howard - see my post above). Any cap related benefits will be icing on the cake. I'm not saying our payroll will end up looking like what Isaiah did to the Knicks, but the consensus in DC is that the team is willing to pay the tax for at least the next two years.

I hope that helps clear things up!
