Tyreke Evans - Chad Ford Reporting

Post#1 » by avi623 » Fri Jun 12, 2009 7:08 pm

Chad Ford is reporting a rumor that the Celtics are floating Ray Allen's expiring contract for a Top 5 or Top 10 pick to get Tyreke Evans who apparently Danny is in love with. He cited the Wizards as the most likely partner for money and roster reasons (Arenas, Ray, Butler and Jamison would be an offensive juggernaut). I don't buy it, and if it is true, I would rather have it be James Harden than Tyreke. Harden is a surefire NBA starter at the two, Evans is a high risk pick for whoever drafts him.

Thoughts....

Interesting... though I don't know much about Tyreke Evans except that he's Reggie Evan's brother. But this only makes sense if Danny can get a Butler or Jamison along with the #5. Haywood is also a very enticing option depending on health. The Celtics would have three very good defenders up front with KG, Perk and Haywood.

Overall though, it seems that Danny has decided he's not going to just sit on his hands and let this team play it out a la Bird, Parish, McHale. I think that's good because it seems that the time is ripe for the Celtics to take advantage of the economy, 2010, etc. to land a couple of young pieces to ensure the health of the franchise long-term. And reality is that Ray is a great shooter but he's not a franchise talent and much of his talent is under-utilized given that Rondo, Pierce, and KG are all better offensive options on the whole.

Not exactly an easy trade if we base it on what Ford is saying. If we assume that none of the big 3 from Washington are included in the trade,Washington doesn't have any other really large contract to match with Ray's max expiring. The trade would look like this
Ray Allen (19.8 mill)
Maybe Pruitt or Walker if they want an extra young player at min salary

for

Etan Thomas (7.3) or Haywood (6) - they won't trade away both their centers
Mike James (6.4)
Darius Songaila (4.5)
Deshawn Stevenson (3.6)
#5 pick
Adding up to 21.8 or 19.5 depending on which center. Thomas, Haywood and James are all expiring as well. I don't know if Washington would be willing to gut their roster that much. For us, it would depend on how much we believe in the #5 pick. We certainly would not have any depth problems after a trade like that though.

I just looked at Washington's salaries and with the possible exception of Arenas, they don't have a single bad contract.

If they wanted to dump Arenas, I guess this might make sense.

If they wanted to make a run next year with a big 4 of Arenas/Allen/Butler/Jamison, it might be interesting. But they could never re-sign Ray while keeping those 3 guys.

"Expiring salary for a high draft pick" is not really a plausible structure for a trade, unless some SERIOUSLY bad contracts are sent along with the draft pick.

Ford proposed Etan Thomas, Mike james, and Darius Songaila.

He also said that if we cannot grab Tyreke we will still probably try to jump somewhere into the first round.

I guess I would be OK with it if somehow Ainge got Washington to include the 5th pick and Nick Young.

If Ainge is really looking to do this then it seems the Kings would be the best fit at #4.

Wow. Lots of smoke coming out of the Celtics. This moves seems like more of a long term deal.. I think Danny wants to lengthen the C's window.

I'd personally take Stevenson over Songaila. Songaila would mean we don't have to re-sign Davis but we still have a hole at backup wing. I'd trade for Stevenson with the plan of keeping Davis and having the bench set.

Well I don't know about anybody else but I'd have to at least get Haywood outside of Arenas, Butler, Jamison. I'd probably do #5 (if Ainge truly is in love with Evans) with Haywood, Songaila or Stevenson, and James for Ray and Giddens

I am not sold on Tyreke Evans based on what I read. But I do trust DA. Which is besides the point here because I do not trust Chad Ford, nor would I expect DA to be non-confidentially vocal regarding the prospect of being in love with any one player.

There is smoke though, I do get the sense DA is exploring all options, and I do like that.

But why would Washington do that??? They probably wouldn't re-sign Ray since they've committed so much to their 3 guys; and all the cap/tax relief they get is losing a year of Songaila's contract.

When it comes to expirings, I think Washington is a seller rather than a buyer. #5 plus some expirings for a young guy someone wants to dump; not for another expiring.

Honestly, none of this trade talk makes sense for Washington. Given their structure the best move would be to keep the pick and add to the Arenas/Jamison/Butler core with a young guy.

I don't get it. As many others have said, why are we even thinking about rebuilding? We have our starting 5. All we need is some bench help.

Evans has great upside but how long before he's an All Star (if ever)?

I liked Harden until the NCAA Tournament. He looked slow and passive.

I like rumours!

Well, I would love Haywood but I doubt they are interested in trading him.

I liked Thomas when he was healthy but I don`t know if he can play like he did a few years back. I guess it would have to be something like Thomas, James, Songaila or Stevenson. Position wise we would fill our bench perfectly but I think Thomas and James are done...

On a side note. We'd get some expirings in James to make another trade. Maybe for Stephen Jackson or another 2 guard.

I like Evans a lot, does seem like the type Ainge would be interested in.

I think Ainge's thought process is that the days of Ray Allen as a primary ball handler are over. As we saw, he's basically become a shooter off screens/set open shots. While I love Ray, a player of similar skill set can generally be acquired for a much cheaper price tag, while not losing a ton on the production side. I think Ainge sees this as an opportunity to replenish the youth without killing this team's chances. Let me stress once again that I love Ray as a player, and he was huge for us both this year and last, but with a healthy roster and an emerging Rondo (who needs to be re-signed), it's unlikely we can afford Ray past this year, and he quite frankly is the most expendable of our max players.

Washington has expiring contracts already- Etan Thomas, Haywood and Mike James all have 1 year to go. So they'd be making the trade to get Ray-Allen-The-Player, not Ray-Allen-The-Ending-Contract. 5th pick isn't much to give up, I guess.

Just like the Memphis rumor- we get a high draft pick, 3 bench-fillers for one star, and cap flexibility to either re-route expirings for another high-salary or to deal the bench-fillers for better fits.

But who the heck is Evans? Admittedly I don't follow the draft closely now that the C's are good, but- no one in this draft seems to be creating any buzz.

Maybe we can get gun-toting Blatche

I have never seen Evans plays, so I checked some videos...

He actually reminds me of Dwayne Wade... I looked up their predraft measurements and they are very similar. Evans is a quarter of an inch taller and has better wingspan and standing reach...

Sorry! If the Celtics are trying to win a championship next season then this trade is not the answer. Some fans will get all excited because it's something new but the best chance for the Celtics to win next season is keeping the starting 5 together and adding through free agency.

I hope Danny Ainge's ego isn't getting the best of him. The Celtics are not going to win the championship with a rookie SG.

I'm fine with trading Ray if it means making our team better now, not for a prospect that Ainge loves that could end up like Marcus Banks.
