Grousbeck: We can offer a 'max contract' next year

By: Greg Cameron

According to Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, they will have the financial flexibility to offer someone a full max contract next summer. Speaking with “Dale & Holley” Monday, Grousbeck did not give specifics, but he reiterated this fact by saying “there is a situation under which we could do that.” Several high-profile players who would command a max contract are currently set to become free agents in 2010, including LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, and Chris Bosh.

This is very interesting. In theory, if Pierce opts out the Celtics can offer a max contract to someone and still resign Pierce, Allen & Rondo if they wanted to because all 3 players have some form of Bird rights. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

This could also be where the Rondo rumors are coming from this off-season. Who would you want to give max $? Rondo, Wade, James, Bosh etc.

It's one thing to have the money, another thing to have a player to spend it on. Just those you'd named will likely stay with their current teams, or sign someplace not Boston.

If this were the case, then I think Rondo and Ray would have to be involved in the trade...It might be foolish to renounce Ray after the season when we can get a very good piece for Ray and Rondo right now.

Is he taking into account the capholds that Rondo, Ray and Pierce would have?

Not quite sure how it would work but you can tell Grousbeck, Ainge and the rest of Celtics management are thinking about the scenario.

I don't want to wait. We need to make some moves now. The Celtics don't want to waste KG and PP's prime years just on a frigging hope. That's something the Knicks are doing. We are better then that.

I think you could renounce Ray's rights and later sign him to the full MLE if they wanted to use it on him. I am not a NBA cap management expert but I think they could do this.

In other words Wyc is saying I'm going to sit on my hands and buy myself time by promising something later.

Sounds like a season ticket sales pitch to me.

Pretty harsh words for what this Celtics management has done in the past don't you think?

I read somewhere that the Celtics are No. 1 in the league as far as season ticket renewals at 90%.

If we are trying to save money we might as well do the Sacramento trade for the 4th pick and Thompson/Hawes.

I don't understand why some of us here are so down of the ownership. They just made 2 landmark deals bringing us from next to last to the title in 1 season making 2 super deals and some of us have just gotten some sort of amnesia in just 1 season. It's amazing....just freaking amazing. It's like liar...liar...pants on fire on everything the ownership says.

All I'm saying is--I don't wanna hear promises and maybe's after the off season we had last year---they better not just sit around with their fingers crossed and do NOTHING again this year...Sure, I'm thankful for 2007-2008...But the way they SACRIFICED our Players, Doc and THIS season was a disgrace-!!

Nope, we have a great team now. We can't penny pinch, that's what rebuilding teams and the clippers do.
