Buzz that Josh Smith is being shopped, so thought I'd ask if we could get him/need him?

He is a good defender, mild offensive threat and would be able to back up both PP and KG. Would he come off the bench happily?

Thoughts? I havent bothered with any trade checkers to see if it could happen....

I like Josh Smith....he would give us high energy, good defence and up our shot blocking in the second unit.

I don;t think we can get him..doubt it..

I mentioned it in the I really don't understand all this trade talk thread. The main problems with trading for Smith is matching contracts and sending assets Atlanta would covet. One trade that I mentioned there was:

for
Ray
Rondo

Salary wise this works. Atlanta gets a young PG it has been lacking for years for Smith. Ray for Joe Johnson is pretty much a lateral move as both are expiring but they balance the salaries out (Smoove makes 10 mill plus trade kicker, Rondo makes 2.6 mill). I don't know if this is enough for Atlanta as they'd probably prefer trading Smoove to a team that can give them instant salary relief. From our point of view, I think we could make it work but we'd need to sign a starting PG. Smoove would start at SF and JJ would be a leading candidate for 6th man of the year getting minutes at PG, SG, and maybe even SF. A frontcourt of Smoove, Garnett and Perkins would be downright scary.

That's my guess at how they'd start unless you want to put Smith on the bencc and having him back up KG and PP. Either way the end result is Johnson, Pierce, Smith and KG each playing starter minutes across SG, SF and PF and conceivably all of them will be on the court at the same time for some period of time each game. Smith is too good for a reserve role and he's getting paid a lot to just be a backup. If he comes here he'll command starter minutes which means KG would have to play some C and/or PP would have to play some SG.

Smith is amazing, and needs to get a new coach asap cause he hasnt developed how he should of (his fault too i know)

he is one of my absolute favourite players in the league, and if there was one guy who could learn everything from KG and become a monster defensively it would be Smith

the Ray/Rondo for JJ/Smith trade above would be absolutely amazing as far as im concerned, Atlanta wouldnt buy it though

I would love to see him here, but its not likely unfortunately

The kid is real immature and pretty damn unprofessional from what I have seen. He is a great athlete but then I see him dial up that 3pt shot and miss everything by 3 ft and I am kind of for who, for what? I really like the player just not the brain.

Josh Smith and Rondo as teammates in Boston would be sick. But, can he be a leader? Is he a malcontent?

i dont think hes really a natural leader, i think with a new team and new coaches he would thrive though and wouldnt be a distraction

Rondo or Perk would be the main piece ATL would want, so its not likely he and Rondo would end up here together

So, are you suggesting that Atlanta wouldn't resign Bibby? Because you won't need him if you've Rondo.

I think Ray/Rondo/Scal (salary only) for Johnson/Smith would be a great deal, as long as we could pick up Miller (or Bibby) with the MLE

Johnson can take over more of the regular season scoring load, and Smith allows Pierce and KG's minutes to reduce drastically during the season

Miller (MLE)/Marbury/Pruitt
Johnson/House/Giddens
Pierce/Smith/Walker
Garnett/Smith/Powe
Perkins/Davis/LLE

sign me up for that....
doubt ATL bites though

though, i still cant see us being involved in anything this big, and when we were contenders anyway im not surprised, the MLE is the big deal for us this off-season, we need a contributor with it in a big way

I'll ask this here, instead of starting a new topic. With regards to 'that many egos'....I recall years ago 90's (??) when I followed the NFL briefly (hard to follow NFL in Oz)..that the Dallas Cowboys kinda stacked their team for one year with a bunch of all-stars...they all accepted one year contacts at very little money to ensure they all got to play together (am I remebering correctly?) and increase the chances that they would will a superbowl and they did...one guy was Thigpen??.....

Scal is not needed for the trade to work and something tells me Atlanta would want to take the least amount of money possible. Outside of that, I like the idea of Miller/Bibby at PG. I don't think we'd need to re-sign Davis after the trade since Davis can only match up against a limited amount of centers. I'd much prefer trying to sign Rasho to be the backup C. Is there a PG option out there that is decent enough and yet willing to take less than the full MLE? That way we can put some money into getting a true backup C.

With that scenario that he presented, how many backup centers do you know would be willing to sign for the minimum or LLE. Assuming Rondo is traded and we use the whole MLE on a PG there just aren't that many options at backup C.

For the numbers to work do we have to trade Ray and Rondo both?

It'd be cool in one way to have Smith and Rondo together, since they're high school friends, and Rondo would probably be less moody, but our shooting would stink with Smith, Rondo, and Tony Allen all playing major minutes with Ray gone. PLUS i'm not sure that Smith is talented enough to balance the loss of Ray in the short term.

OTOH if we trade Rondo for Smith, we have the no point guard problem. In both cases, we're trading starters for a guy who'd be a bench player.

The Hawks have had no problem finding teams interested in Smith. The issue is the whopping $6 million trade kicker attached to his contract. The trade kicker essentially would require the team that trades for Smith to pay him the $6 million immediately. In this economic climate, many owners will balk at the payment.

"You are going to see very few owners willing to do things like that anymore," one GM said. "I'm not saying he's impossible to trade. There are a few owners like Paul Allen, James Dolan, Mark Cuban and maybe Daniel Gilbert who would pay the money. But there aren't many."
