I was on Celtics Blog and I found a good link about a possible candidate for our Pierce backup, Quinton Ross. I've always like his defensive toughness and the article points out all his strong points while debunking some of his critiques. Its a good read if you've got 5 mins.

I have only watched so much of Quinton Ross, but I know that statistically he is no better offensively than Tony.

Maybe a better fit, maybe less mistake prone, not an upgrade by any means.

His three point shooting percentages are misleading. Last season was the first season he shot any real quantity of threes (1.3 attempts per game, 2.7 per 36 minutes, not that many). He posted a respectable 37.5%. But most of his shots were two point shot attempts and he only hit about 39% of those. In other words - defenses had little reason to be guarding him, he was generally the least efficient player on the floor and had never shown any real promise from long range. He is at an age where that could improve, he did improve his FT% last season...so I guess he is probably sufficient from behind the arc...

He also lacks strength and does not pull down many rebounds, averaging about 4 per 36.

This is not to say he couldn't be a decent pick up in the right situation. But I wouldn't be thrilled to land him.

I could live with Ross as the backup SF. I think he is an upgrade over Tony where it matters: TOs. Plus, he's used to being used as a defensive stopper against top wings. In terms of offense, one thing that the article pointed out and the stats back up is that he's the classical example of a guy that puts up better numbers on a good team. His first couple of years in LAC were much better than his year in Memphis where he'd have to create his shot more often. I would prefer a guy with better 3 point shooting but Ross would be passable.

He's a horrible player. Don't want anything to do with him. You play 4 on 5 with him on the court, yes he doesn't make mistakes, but that's because he doesn't try to do anything with the ball or even want it. The guy is possibly the most passive player in the league. If we're going to sign someone let's make sure it's a 2 way player.

The Celtics should be putting all efforts into signing Grant Hill as the major back-up swingman- with the Suns seemingly fire-saleing the team, Hill would want to play for a contender.
