My prediction for the Celtics in the next 2 years

This is what I think is a possible scenario for the Celtics in the next two years.

The good news:

For 2010, I see us signing D. Wade. Wyc has already said we will have enough money to sign a big name player for 2010. Danny Ainge's plan for the last few years has been to free up money for 2010, when players like Lebron, Wade, Dirk, and Bosh will be free agents. This was the reason we didn't resign Posey to a long term contract. This was also the reason we didn't see TA and House past the 2009 season.

In 2010, Ray Allen comes off the books. Scal comes off the books. So does Tony Allen and House if Eddie dicides to stay this year. That's over $20 million coming off the books. I would love to see Ray resign with us as a 6th man for about $5-7 million.

Wade is now saying he can see himself leaving Miami. I can see Wade being a Celtic for 2010.

The bad news:

If we are going to get Wade here, we won't be able to sign free agents this summer, at least not ones for more than a year, like the Posey contract. So that leaves out players like Zaza, Barnes, and Ariza. This may be the reason that we also don't resign BBD because he will be looking for a long term contract with more money.

However the news isn't that that bad. We can still sign a player that is in the end of his career that wants to win a title and can take a one year deal. A player like Rasheed or McDyess will be a possibility for 2009

Rasheed or McDyess will take care of our need for a big. I also have a good feeling we can resign Powe because we can get him for cheap. That still leaves us with a need for a SF to back up Pierce. Hopefully TA, Giddens or Walker can be that player. I'm hoping that it will be Walker. There is also a possibility that we can sign someone like Grant Hill or Anthony Parker for a year. Another guy that I would like us to look at is James White. He is a 6-7 player that can defend and hit the three.

I feel that we will keep our starting 5 together this year. We can still add the pieces for 2009 to have a chance at another title, until Wade gets here.

getting wade would be extremely difficult but hopefully it is a possibility,

this year i would look to try to add grant hill for the vets min, a point guard in the second round (mills, price, mcneal, douglas) and another wing through the draft, terrence williams would be ideal, daujun summers, chase buddinger, wayne ellington, dionte chrismas, danny green, jodie meeks, marcus thorton would all be guys i look at to complement eddie and grant off the bench

then to fill the center role i would look to sign rasho, drew gooden, chris wilcox, joe smith, maybe sheed to a cheap one year deal

although sheed would require probably full MLE

I didn't think Wade was a possibility until realizing he'll be 28 in January. Hence I don't think he'll be at an age where he can wait around for a young Bulls team to mature or hope him and Bosh or him and Amare is enough to take the East. Joining Perk, KG, Pierce and Rondo would give him his best chance at a title for the next couple years.

Just because 20 million is coming off the books doesn't mean we can sign a guy for 20 million. With the current contracts it looks like we would have about 5 million to sign a guy. Only way we get into that top tier fa class of 2010 is if we do some serious maneuvering. I might want to wait til 2011 as it is. The Durant class.

2011 is not the plan at all. Like I mentioned, DA was waiting for the 2010 free agent class. Wyc recently said that he will be able to sign a high profile player in 2010.

I think the rationale is that Pierce would opt out and then we'd exercise his Bird Rights after signing a max player. It's kind of a fantasy dream scenario at this point, but I think it is technically possible.

No it's not. If Pierce weren't renounced, there would be a huge cap hold for him, and if he were renounced, that would be the end of Bird Rights.

I thought the plan was for Pierce and the C's to agree to a much easier on the cap contract this upcoming year so that his number's greatly reduced. In exchange for the lower starting salary you'd give him a long term deal that assures he stays a Celtic his entire career.

Of course it also hinges on letting Ray walk when he's done and probably renouncing Rondo. But if you can lure D Wade or another primo free agent it might be worth it.

Oh, I forgot about cap holds and all that business. I guess that means it works on the expectation that Pierce would agree to take somewhere between a 50%-70% reduction in pay from what he would be making if he didn't opt out. In other words, impossible.

I think we CAN get a big name summer of 2010 but probably not by outright signing them. A trade seems much more likely. Pierce will be an expiring and hopefully we can extent Ray for one more year so HE is the expiring that goes out in a trade. If not I am unsure about sign and trade rules. For some reason I think you can ony trade a person by themselves if it is a sign and trade situation. We just need to get some more chips to use in a trade. It seems that for now it is Rondo. My dream scenario is LBJ wants out of CLE and we are the only team that can offer a good package (Ray and Rondo and filler) AND be left with a better team that the cavs would be without LBJ. This also works for Bosh and Wade.

I still think that of those guys, only Walker is tall enough to even consider as our backup 3, and even his height is iffy. We need someone who can guard LeBron. I really liked the Marion pipe dream the other day.

I don't think Wyc really said anything other than "there is a scenario" where we could get a lot of cap room by 2010. I think that scenario would require losing Ray, Rondo, Davis, and would require a paycut from Pierce. Couple that with weakening next year's team by not taking on FA's...sounds like too much of a gamble.
