A Lot of Soon to be Disappointed Players

Post#1 » by canman1971 » Wed Jun 17, 2009 11:20 pm

Does anyone else feel that there is going to be a lot of disappointed players this offseason? I envision many taking short, possible 1 year deals in hopes of maximizing next year with the way the economy is going. I have a hard time seeing those 5 year mid level contracts at max dollars being handed out. There is going to be some solid bench players for Ainge to choose from IMO. I say unless you get a stud in return, leave the starting 5 alone and add some of these guys who will be available.

Good Topic....Look at this list of Free Agents...I def think a lot of guys are screwed--How many teams are under the cap and can afford more than the MLE.??....Where the hell is Iverson gonna sign?...Memphis?...NOBODY is gonna give him a huge payday...A lot of these guys wanna win NOW---it aint happening for them -unless they sign for the MLE or LLE.

Marion ?
Boozer ?
Iverson ?
Artest ?
R.Wallace ?
Kidd ?
Ilgauskas ?
Gordon ?
Bibby ?
Pachulia ?
Varejao ? (you know he'll opt out-he's got an inflated ego)
Marbury ?

and those are the top tier guys....Most will re-sign, or sign a one year deal I guess.

it does appear there are far more players looking for money and teams then teams with the money to spend (and willing to spend on older guys)

that probably just leaves a lot of guys re-signing though, still i think there would be at least one impact guy we can get with the mid level, whether it be sheed, marion etc

Nice post. I asked this to ford in his chat the other day. I asked who's the best player who will have to settle for the MLE. Too bad he decided to answer "What is your favorite color" instead.

p.s. it was blue.

It's going to be interesting. I think in addition to lower dollars, that there are going to be teams not filling the 15 spots, resulting in a number of FA's who can be plucked at any time.

If some of these guys opting out of contracts end up signing for less money, I'd be really happy.

What I'm also very interested in seeing, almost more than what Ainge does with FA's, is whether it is going to be possible to grab a few nice draft spots for teams not wanting to pay first round contracts and just looking for a small cash infusion. My inclination is Pruitt is going to be released and a PG drafted, and it wouldn't surprise me if Powe isn't resigned. Although this seems a weaker draft especially for big men, it's also a unique opportunity for some youth upgrades.

Iverson could be interesting but I can't see him coming off the bench.

Big Z would be a nice back up to Perkins. A skilled Mikki Moore.

I believe Big Z has a players option for $11.5 Mil, I can't imagine him opting out.

My guess is that we will see a lot of one year full mle offers and if we see players jump on those it is going to be ugly at that point you will likely see the LLE get a lot of use this offseason.

The real question is with guys like Marion, I am not real focused on anyone else but I guess Ariza and Odom would be in the same boat, guys worth multi year deals still but not likely to see much more than MLE offers this offseason, push for multi year MLE deals or roll the dice that you can do better next off season, when their will be cap space but very little mle money because of it.

with the economy + the free agent class of 2010, i also feel many 15-19m a year guys will end up 1 year 5m guys. Teams wont' spend the money, and the players don't want long term either becuase the teams that miss out on wade/bosh/lbcrybaby will then spend the money on the b teamers who are again free agents.

I'd also add Steve Nash and Grant Hill to the list.

I am a closet fan of his. He was very good early got hurt and was not quite the same. Basically a bigger TA without the head scratching to's. He would be a good cheap pick up but lacks 3 pt range which is kind of downer.
