I don't see why not, assuming that it's within Boston desired price range.
Celtics guard Ray Allen has expressed a desire for a contract extension, league executives say, but that isn’t happening in Boston

So Steph is staying and Ray is leaving keep the good news coming Bonsai.
You almost feel bad for Ray and then you remember he is making 20 mil bucks, he can handle it.

Does anyone know, can the team do something like this under the CBA?
If they work out an extension for another 2 years and $12 million total, such that Ray will be paid:
$19 million for next year + additional $12 million
all money spread over the total of the next 3 years (2009-10 : 2011-12)
Then can they spread the total amount, so that Ray is paid:
2009-10: $10.33 million
2010-11: $10.33 million
2011-12: $10.33 million
So, the question is, Can the team reduce it's salary cap for 2009-10 by extending his deal?

They'd become sign and trade rumors.

I don't believe you can do this under the CBA. In the NBA, I believe the contracts are guaranteed and cannot be changed after the fact. So, Ray would get paid his $19 Mil, then resigned for following years.
Because he will be 35 next July, his salary will take a big dip after next season, but $6Mil a year may be too low if his production is close to what it was this season. I'd guess $8 to $9Mil/yr for two more years.

it's good that he wants an extension....this will make it easier for people to swallow, when Ainge trades him this Summer--or at the Deadline.

C's should be able to trade him straight across for Amare---Phoenix is in a whole lotta trouble Salary-wise....We can keep Rondo---maybe the Suns buy Ray out--THEN we give him his extension.

Yawn....another "gem" from Yahoo sports.... why would Ray would want another Multi Million Dollar contract to play professional basket ball?!?!?! LOL Yahoo has realy gone out on a limb here....
Danny Ainge has been quoted that there will be no discussions about contract extensions until after the draft and until October...so YES there will be no extentions for RAY or Rondo anytime soon.

x2, I agree with this. Thanks for the memories Ray, love you for what you've done as a Celtic and in helping bring another banner, but your expiring deal combined with your age and need for an extension makes you expendable in trade situations.

Understood and agreed, but I don't believe Ray is losing any guaranteed money in my scenario. Agreed that it may be impossible to reduce the salary cap in the way I thought.
I just wasn't clear if Ray could agree to deal worth more money, but immediately factored in his age, etc. His $19 million + for 2009-10 is a pretty big hit and would seem to be leading to a lot of rumors assuming it is better to move him now.
If there was a scenario where you could extend Ray but pay much less per year, I think it would be mutually beneficial. Even if the team needs to take the hit this year, I wouldn't mind having a dramatically less expensive Ray Allen for the next 2-3 years.
Thanks for the info.

Ray will turn thirty-four next month. And I don't expect too much of a drop-off from this season if he remains healthy. I'm convinced now that the 2010 free agency crop is affecting Ainge's decision to sign any current player to an extension. Davis' contract situation is probably the only one that gets resolved this off-season. Ideally, it's a sign-and-trade deal that gets back a backup center or point guard.

If the $$ is right, I'd sign him to an extension in a heartbeat...

As I understand, this is how it works in the NFL. You have a cap hit number and an actually salary number.

Here is what Hemingway would do: Shop Ray now and if you can't get anything sign him for 1 more year. That way we can be players next summer without having to trade Pierce.

Ray Allen Thinks He's Staying Put
"I spoke with my side of the equation and for right now there is no desire to move me," Allen said. "We're in a great position to win a championship again this next year."
