Whoa, that would have been great. I'm sure Dumars wouldn't want to deal them in the same conference. Plus if he's going to rebuild he'd probably want a high draft pick.

I pretty much gather that Rip/Prince is the main thing Danny was after, but if hes trading Rondo he really needs to get a capable point guard to replace him

unfortunately the only guy Detroit has that fits the bill is Stuckey, and they would value him far too highly (regardless whether they should or not) , I bet they were listening until his name was dropped

Detroit has zero incentive. Ray and Rip are on the same level. Prince & Stuckey has more value than Rondo. The Pistons would rather use their capspace then make any sorts of trades like this.

This would just be a trade for Rondo since they would be more likely to let Ray walk away for nothing, and Pistons don't really need Rajon Rondo. Thats why this trade was rejected. You don't trade 3 starters away like that for 1 guy that isn't a superstar and doesnt fill a position of need.

Use their capspace on what though... Boozer, Gordon?

if you want that then fair enough, but getting rays huge expiring for the 2010 FA market is definitely SOME incentive, along with a great young point guard

Why is Ainge shopping Rondo? That makes no sense to me as an outsider looking in. Is he causing problems in the lockerroom? Does Celtic management just not want to pay him? I don't get it at all.

The thing is, Detroit is not a hot free agent destination and Dumars does not overpay. He has a much better shot of getting stuff done this offseason that he would making a spalsh in 10 when so many other teams have money. And while Rondo is a great point, he is not needed. This trade doesnt make much sense for Detroit, that is ultimately why it was rejected. Pistons should just get Boozer and Gordon and see how they work out.

This trade make Pistons worse next season and leaves too many question marks in the future. The Pistons aren't trying to rebuild, they are trying to get back to competing next season using their capspace, this trade doesn't allow them to do that at all.

Dumars gave away Billups for nothing, so anything is possible in his cap space maneuverings. But Rip is expiring too, and Prince has just one more year.

Ray for Rip and Prince straight up does work. So including Giddens and/or Walker works too.

Rip just signed an extension- he has 2 more years guaranteed and 1 more year partially guarenteed.

Detroit has a PG and they have a SG what they need is a PF or C. They wont also lose their depth at SF just to get more players at positions they already have filled

Rip isn't a great outside shooter. Stuckey isn't all that good IMO. Rip is expiring - my bad he's not, so our ability to sign a max level FA next offseason would go away. Prince would be nice, obviously, but a suitable back-up SF would be more easily come by via FA than a decent point guard. I wouldn't have even liked that deal.

I think this would be an awesome deal for Detroit, actually. Ray>>Rip, Rondo>>>>>Stuckey, Prince could easily be replaced considering they would have 20+ mil in cap room (which could be thrown partially at a guy like Marion or Odom). And then, when Ray expired next offseason, they'd have more caproom.

few theories on it have been floated..

they arent sure whether he will be worth the huge extension he's likely to get

he has a very arrogant streak about him, may be uncoachable later on

using a young guy, with a high current value to get vets to help extend the window of Pierce and KG by a year or 2.. Rondo wont be a team carrying type star, but he has very high value now because of his play in the play-offs.. if danny can pick up some vets to give us the best chance of winning this and next season it looks like he'll bite

Certainly an interesting proposal although I still think we are underrating how good Rondo is. It seems to me like there should be a good deal out there for Ray alone.

I'd take Prince & Stuckey for Ray and Rondo. Prince is an ideal defender to put on Kobe and LeBron. I'm not following what Detroit's trying to do. They extended Rip, but are after Ben Gordon?? Is Prince on the move??

I'm not sure which one it is:

1) To get something of value back, you have to give up something just as enticing. The Celtics' 1st rounders aren't too valuable at the moment seeing as how they'll surely be in the high 20s for at least the next couple of years. Ray Allen's expiring ain't bad, but to get players back that will keep the Cs in contention, they've got to throw Rondo in. If this is the case, then Ainge probably feels he's got someone in the free agent pool lined up to replace him.

2) Ainge might feel that Rondo has peaked, and might not be worth $9-10 million per year after the Big 3 are gone. Ainge has always maintained that to be successful in trades, you buy low and sell high. He bought Ricky Davis for cheap, then shipped him out just as he was starting to become a bit of a problem in the lockerroom. No one ever found out he was mocking Pierce's speeches until after he was traded. Now don't get me wrong - I'm not implying that Rondo's a problem in the lockerroom. What I'm trying to get at is this - how good will Rondo be when defenses make him their primary focus. He was exposed in the Orlando series despite having Pierce and Ray. He might put up nice stats right now, but perhaps Ainge feels his play might decline when defenses start paying more attention to him?

Either way, I just hope that if Ainge does decide to let Rondo go, it's in an effort to acquire guys that will help keep the Cs as a top 4 team for at least the next 2-3 seasons before dropping off again. Personally, I would probably put up with a sharp decline and endure another period similar to 2005 - 2007, so long as it gets the Cs another 1-2 championships.

Yeah, you put Ray AND Rondo in the same deal----you better be getting back someone like Bosh/Wade/CP3---no lateral moves.
