Idea: Minn Trade?

Post#1 » by Bulldog » Sun Jun 28, 2009 2:27 pm

Unbelievably Minn now has 8 guys who play the 4 and 5, not counting Gomes - Big Al, Love, C Smith, Songalia, Cardinal, E Thomas, Percherov, Madsen. (OK - the last 4 are useless) If we spend our MLE on a true center or wing and cannot sign Big Baby because he was offered too much $$ by another team, we might be able to find a backup PF here. Also, Minn has no one to play SG except R Carney (who is a FA). They might be one of the few teams that actually sees value in TA as an acceptable SG and only one year left on his contract (and/or be interested in Giddens). What do you think about Craig Smith (10/4 in 20 minutes per game, efFG%- 56%, one year left on contract at $2.3M and we have Bird rights at the end) for Tony Allen?

Also, you got to wonder about Gomes. He split his time pretty equally at the 3 and 4 last year - there's not going to be much opportunity at the 4 now. Corey Brewer is coming back from his knee surgery (he is scheduled to play the summer league) and needs time at the 3. Could we pry Gomes away from Minn? TA and Giddens would work salary-wise and give them someone to play the SG....and reduce their salary for next year (2010). Also, if they do a deal for Rubio with NYC and end up with W Chandler, they'll be overloaded at the SF. TA + Giddens (plus a 2nd round 2010 pick?) for Gomes would make my day.

As you said most of the those big guys are useless. We need to put together a team that can win. I think they are alright with having Gomes, Brewer and possibly W.Chandler or Carney. They don't need to trade with us.

I'd take Gomes.

I agree that Craig Smith won't be a major addition. However, if we don't have the MLE left (after spending it on a center or wing) and need a PF, I see this as reasonable option He can give the same productivity as Baby, but couldn't guard some centers as Baby does. He'd buy us time to see how Powe comes along...at little cost.

Ryan Gomes was my favorite binky...I was pretty down when we let him go, so I would be absolutely thrilled if we got him back..lol

After Powe gets back what will our team be like though? We'll have KG, Big Baby, Cookie, Powe, & Scal, all trying to get minutes at the 4. I don't think we need a PF, we need a center.

Baby - we don't need to resign him
Gomes - he is a small forward
Powe - he'll be injured for the 1st 2 months
Scala - the less minutes he plays the better

Is Etan Thomas healthy? He might be a more realistic pickup.

I believe that Detroit would value Tony Allen, Giddens or Walker.

They have Aaron Affalo backing up Richard Hamilton at SG, that's it.

They have Will Bynum backing up Rodney Stuckey at PG, that's it.

They have a treasure trove of SF's, none other than Tayshaun Prince who actually
may be any good.

Other than Kwame Brown, Jason Maxiell and possibly an overpaid Antonio McDyess
(if he gets the contract pay back for the $8 million he left on the table in Denver),
I don't know that they have anything up front returning.
