We really don`t have to worry about DET. Dumars certainly won`t overpay for a guy like Davis. Wallace OTOH...I could definitely see MEM making a stupid offer...

Teams can't offer him more than the MLE because BBD is an Early Bird Rights player. It's nicknamed the "Gilbert Arenas Provision" - which prevents teams from offering huge contracts to other teams' 2nd year RFA's, and caps the max offer that a team can make to a player in that situation at the 'average salary', the MLE.

Of course he is---Jerry West gave him that job on the condition he would do a favor or two....ahem--Gasol trade....while we're at it--Pitino hired Wallace on the Good word of Pat friggin Riley---a known Celtic HATER----so, draw your own conclusions as to why Wallace EFFED up EVERYTHING he ever did while working for the C's.

Trading Gasol to get cap room for big baby. Sounds like what they were getting.
I love how people are justifying the trade like Marc Gasol is some kind of superstar - he was so great they took Thabeet #2...

I think Marc will be better than Thabeet, but I think is Thabeet is gonna be a huge bust.

Can Boston swing a sign-and-trade with Memphis or would Memphis not have to go through that?
Perhaps, target M. Gasol... Gasol will make $3.2M next season.
According to a league source, Davis, as a restricted free agent, will carry a mid-level exception (approximately $5.8 million) price tag into the marketplace. He also qualifies as a so-called “Early Bird” exception free agent (two years with the same team), meaning the Celtics can sign him for up to 175 percent of last season’s salary.
That amount would approximate the mid-level exception. Because of Davis’ Early Bird status, the Celtics could pay that amount without using their mid-level exception.
The question is whether the Celtics are willing to pay that much.
Detroit and Memphis - two teams with cap space - both are expected to court Davis over the next month. The Pistons, depending on who they bring back, are a playoff team. Memphis, attracted to Davis’ promise as a young power forward, isn’t even close.
And that, in turn, is the question facing Davis.

This is one thing I really wish we could clear on on the board. I could be wrong, but I can't see how a sign and trade makes any sense. Why would anyone trade from him when they can just sign him? We can't sign him to anymore than anyone else can. And if a team offers more then a few mil we won't match. Also its not like a team that Davis wouldn't want to go to can make a deal because I can't see us doing a SnT where we trick him. I could always be missing something (or perhaps missing a lot of things) but I can not see a plausible SnT scenario.

i agree that a SnT doesn't make much sense to me, but maybe here's a scenario: a team is over the cap and wants to sign BBD, and he wants to go there, but they don't want to use their MLE. they can SnT with us and save their MLE, right? of course there would need to be some incentive for BBD to do this, which i don't quite see what that is.
1 thing tho: i thought BBG made like $1mil or so last season. So 175% of that is less than 2mil, nowhere close to the MLE. is the article just wrong? i think so.

Big Baby will be... a Celtic next season. If he goes, who will replace him? When Garnett was out this season, we burned through Scal, then Powe before BBD saved the day. Sure, we didn't do as well as we would have done had Garnett been healthy. But Davis showed he has got serious game. With Powe gone we really need to keep Davis. Who is available with more upside for the same price?

Well Memphis just got Zach Randolph (some some reason) so their interest in Davis is likely done

I've been saying Davis will be gone by his choice. But that's not strictly true.
The Cs can match any offer, even >MLE money under the new Arenas modification to the Early Bird exception.
I hope they do, even though that takes them deep, deep into luxury tax territory. Bad economy or not, these guys are getting older and more fragile. Among Perk, Garnett, Pierce, Allen, Rondo, Sheed, Hill, and Marbury, NOBODY has the age and track record to be considered particularly durable going forward. You can add Davis to that list too, actually.

and now Charlei V will be a Piston so that stops their intrest.
Honestly I hate this Artest to CLE stuff... CLE doesn't have money... it's a MLE **** WTF is going on!
Regardless, I thought they were going after Charlie V because they need another big. Big Baby Davies seems to be a decent consolidation plan for them. But god do not let them get Artest...
IF CLE gets Artest who can stop Pierce, and we get Sheed who can stop D-12. It's official, the East is a rock, paper, scissors match and whoever is seeded #1 will go to the Finals.
