Glen Davis vs Rasheed Wallace
I know most everyone is panicking here because the Spurs and Cavs have gotten better since the end of the playoffs. The Lakers will be better if they can resign Odom since they already got Artest.
Most everyone here wants Sheed, including the Celtics owners, the big 3, Doc and Danny. Sheed is a bigger name then BBD. Sheed has had a better career than BBD. But Sheed is declining while BBD is improving.
So why aren't we thinking about resiging BBD with the same enthusiasm as Wallace. Before everyone goes nuts, look at the facts.
2009 playoffs. BBD vs Wallace.
Player 1: 30.5 minutes, 6.5 pts, 6.3 rebs, 0.25 blks, 0.8 assists, 0.5 stls, 37% FG, and 0 FT attempts.
Player 2: 36.4 minutes, 15.8pts, 5.6 rebs, 0.57 blks, 1.8 assists, 1.29 stls, 49% FG.
While player 1 was giving up on his teammates and choking in the playoffs and his team getting swept, Player 2 was making game winning shots at the buzzer. Keep in mind also that player 1 will be 35 years old when the season starts, player 2 will be only 23.
And here is another player:
Player 3: 34.0 minuytes, 13.0 pts, 8.5 rebs, 0.75 blks. 0.5 assists, 0.5 stls, and 46% FG.
Player 3 played on the same team as player 1 and outplayed player 1.
Player 1 is: Rasheed Wallace
Player 2 is: BBDPlayer 3 is Antonio MyDyess
At this point in their careers, BBD is a better player than Sheed and I hope Ainge realizes this and goes not let BBD walk. We need to sign BBD and Sheed or MyDyess. He also need to sign Barnes, Parker, or Hill. Getting 1 of 3 will not be good enough to beat the Lakers, Cavs, or Spurs.

While I agree that the C's need to re-sign BBD, I believe Sheed is still more valuable because of what he can bring to the C's as opposed to what he can do for the C's. A lot of intangibles that come with that package.

Re: Glen Davis vs Rasheed Wallace
numbers don't show that with bbd over KG we gave up 10ppg more a game. On top of that wallace is one of the best 1 on 1 defenders in the league and one of the best team defenders as well. and is much longer then bbd.
In a world where offense is all we worry about, and not winning, we can say bbd is close to sheed.

Haha.Offense only? BBD not only scored more than Sheed, but he had more steals, more assists, and more steals and was more clutch. As far as winning, BBD made big shots for Boston in the playoffs that helpled us win games, Sheed hid in the corner as his team was getting mopped off the floor.
Let's stay in the now, not 5 years ago when Sheed was clearly the better player. I would like us to get Sheed, but not at the cost of losing BBD. We need to sign both of them or BBD and MyDess.
Also who whould you rather have guard Shaq or D. Howard? Sheed or BBD. I take BBD.

steals and more clutch.....
yet his man scored more and guys had free trips and layups more.
face it, i love bbd, but when on the court, he is a defensive liability. Remember in the crappy days when peirce complained that the pistons had wallace and wallace to protect the paint and the celtics didn't?
i'm telling u right now, not 1 nba coach or player will tell u that bbd defense will be even remotely close to sheeds this year, next year, or the year after that.
we need both bbd and wallace if we want a chance.
and not wallace's fault the pistons cleared cap space in the middle of the year and gave up on winning with "I"verson sitting on the bench.

Re: Glen Davis vs Rasheed Wallace
Defensively BBD did the best he could, playing out of position against Orlando. A 320 lbs BBD was asked to guard Rashard Lewis, a 3 pt shooting SF.
Rasheed Wallace is a better defensive player, but at nearly 35 years old, he has slowed down. Wallace would have done a better job on Lewis, but BBD would do a better job on monsters like Shaq and D. Howard.
But I agree, we would need to sign both of them, and not just one. We also need to sign a decent wing player to back up Pierce and Ray.

Re: Glen Davis vs Rasheed Wallace
Rasheed Wallace can legitimately play C because of his incredible defensive rebounding, amongst other things. Glen Davis rebounds on the defensive glass worst than many SFs. If you are allowing additional chances at the defensive basket because you can't corral the miss, you lose the possession game. That is no different than allowing a higher shooting percentage and less defensive rebounds. Or, in this case, getting more steals but getting clobbered on the glass.
Rasheed is miles above Davis and it is not even close. Big Belly's defense regressed big time once he saw more offensive touches. It is almost as if he stopped playing on the end of the floor. He was 2004 Michael Redd bad on the defensive end this past season.
And speaking of Big Belly's offense, he doesn't truly spread the floor like Rasheed or, hell, even Scalabrine. Pop-out jumpers create space for the shooter but not for other players on the floor. Davis has shown, repeatedly, to have zero clue about space discipline and is poor, overall, on the offensive end if it doesn't involve him getting the shot.

Wow. Really? You say BBD's offense is bad, yet he averaged nearly 16 points in the playoffs and Wallace averaged about 6. Wallace shot only 37% from the field to BBD's 49%. Wallace also didn't get to the line in 4 games, over 120 minuted played.

If we want to be on of the top teams we need both Sheed and Baby, especially with the Lakers getting Artest and Cleveland getting Shaq.

Wallace is still better than BBD in every aspect of the game, IMO.

Wallace is clearly the better player. The Celtics need what he brings to the table more than what Davis can do. Wallace's ability to play the 4 and 5 would be huge for the Celtics. Now I'd like to have both on the roster, but if I had to pick I'm going with Sheed.

This excercise is foolhardy. What did BBD when Garnett played? Anyhow, Rasheed has more length and a better outside shot and fits better. BTW, regular season stats favor Sheed. Want both, but if I had one, it woudl be Sheed.
Baby is short, and he plays short.

Re: Glen Davis vs Rasheed Wallace
You need 5 quality Bigs to get thru a season.
If Grant Hill came on board, since he's a legitamate mobile 6' 8"
he would have counted as one.
But right now, with Leon in limbo,
there's Perk and KG. Rasheed Wallace and Davis would make 4.
You still need a mobile PF who can shoot from outside,
and defend other mobile PF's. Posey did that, and back up Paul Pierce.
Grant Hill could back up Pierce, and be the mobile PF, without Posey's shot
but with so much more offensively Hill more than compensates.
So, the Celtics should bring in Rasheed, who suck up most of the minutes at
backup C to Kendrick Perkins, and Glen Davis would get some
PF minutes, except when a mobile sub is needed.
Sign and trade for Jamario Moon??? Since Sheed is getting the MLE???

Re: Glen Davis vs Rasheed Wallace
There is simply little urgency with Davis, because they can match any offer. It's unlikely he'll get a contract offer other than the Celtics because of that fact. There is no indication I've seen that the Celtics intend to let Davis walk.
With Sheed in the meantime, he'll get lots of offers and he should be the priority as a result.

Re: Glen Davis vs Rasheed Wallace
Even though I think Rasheed is a bit more valuable to our team (see last paragraph) I have to say I like this topic simply for the fact that I strongly believe people are undervaluing BBD and overvaluing Rasheed.
I'd love to have both.
But, at this point of his career Wallace is not a better offensive player then BBD. He's just not. If you've watched him throughout last season and compared him to BBD, post KG's injury, as a starter, BBD is more impressive. Much more impressive in the playoffs. And, showed much more heart than Sheed has shown over the last 2-3 years. Sheed shoots a pretty low percentage and loves camping out a mile from the basket. Also, though BBD is a sub-par rebounder for his position and Sheed is clearly better, Wallace's rebounding has declined over the last couple of years and he's seeming to be shying away from contact more and more. He hasn't been the 04 Rasheed for a while now...
Where the scale tips is defense. Wallace is a much better defender (though he has slipped in that category as well.) Davis can't stay in front of a chair outside the post. He can learn a thing or two from Powe but ultimately he just doesn't have the length. Having both on the roster would be tremendous but just remember - you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you think Rasheed Wallace is the great Celtics savior.

You can't rely on playoff stats. Remember Jerome james' enormous contract after a good year in the playoffs. Playoff numbers are often skewed and don't reflect the actaul player, especially in role players like BBD.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with BBD. But I thought the whole point of Wallace coming was that he would pair well with Davis. So what am I missing here? Can they not fit both under the cap or something?

The Cs really, really need to have at least 4 bigs as good as the poorer of BBD and Sheed.
And by the way, unless Sheed pouts again, I don't know when I'd give Davis minutes over Sheed except maybe against Howard/Yao/Shaq -- and doesn't Sheed play effective defense on Howard as well?

We need to show a little more effort towards grabbing guys like McDyess and Big Baby. Sheed is not guaranteed to come here, and if we can get guys like McDyess and Big Baby instead, we aren't really giving up much.
