Powe might get another shot?????

Post#1 » by Kefa461 » Mon Jul 6, 2009 10:55 am

“We want him back, but he needs to get healthy,” he said. “He’s one of the favorites that I’ve coached, and I don’t say that often. When he’s done rehabbing, he can come back and play for us.”

Welcome news...glad to see this...hopefully no other team inks him up in the meantime..I would bet that Leon would stay with us over every team except for some teams back home..

Why don't we set up a web-page where all the Celtics-fans can wish Leon good luck and we can let our feelings known towards Ainge about resigning Powe?

We should just go ahead and re-sign him now to a cheap contract so no other teams can grab him...and you better believe that other teams will grab him up before he gets healthy.

Sign him to a cheap contract and tell him it's only a cheap contract til he proves he can play healthy at a high level then extend him for bigger money. It's not that hard. If we dont re-sign him, I could see him killing us if he signs with another team. He's one of my favorite players in the entire league and I'd hate to see him go to SA, CLE or ORL. He'd prolly sign with GS though.

^No. Danny is doing the right thing and waiting until he proves he can play. And IF he can play, I'd be happy to have him back.

The problem with WAITING is other teams have already been contacting him from what I've read, including the Heat. If we wait past the first game of the regular season, I guarantee he'll already be on with another team.

I don't see what the problem would be if we re-sign him to a CHEAP contract at first just to keep him in green, then when he proves he can still play, give him his money. If he can't recover from the injury, oh well, it was a cheap contract.

You really think teams out there are going to sign him BEFORE knowing he is healthy? If we are not doing it why wold anyone else? He will come back mid season.

If they are going to sign him when he can't play, then bye bye Powe. Don't think he's that big a deal.

Yes, I do think other teams will sign him before he's totally healthy. It's not like it's never happened before.

Powe is still very young and when he does play, he's proven he's our best player off the bench and could easily start on another team. Why shouldn't a team like GS or Miami sign him?

I'm just saying I've already heard other teams have already contacted him. Maybe they were just asking how he was doing and that they are interested when he's actually healthy, if that's the case then great. But I really hope, first off, he gets healthy again so he can play anywhere, and secondly, he comes back to Boston.

This isn't about the money, it is about the roster spot. If they could keep him without using a roster spot, I am sure they would do it, but you cannot. This team cannot afford to use a spot for a guy who will not be 100% until the 2010/2011 season.

Got a question, If we pay Leon the minimum, would we have to still pay the luxury tax on that entire amount, or just a percentage of it?

Last time I read from another thread, it is the whole amount.

We got shown last year how important it is to have a healthy big rotation. I want Powe back and I think he'd be the ideal 4th big for this team, but as last year showed, that 4th big is too important to not be able to get in the game for a long amount of time. I hope we can bring him back, but I'd like to see him get a better opportunity with another team.

keep in mind that powe is aiming to be back around mid-season. that means he probably wouldn't get back to 100% physically, mentally etc until the end of the year at the earliest and on a team like the celtics with sheed now, he probably wouldn't get the minutes to do that.

this is probably just a lost year for powe. he'll be back, but i wouldn't even expect anything out of him until next season. any team that signs him will probably take this approach, so it's unlikely he gets signed anywhere before dec-feb period of this season at the earliest. let's re-evaluate then.

i'm 100% confident powe will be back in the nba by next season and will make a decent amount of money over his career. so i'm not crying for him. i would like to see him back on the celtics though, but that just might not be in the cards.

The Celtics aren't spring chickens so we need to be 15 strong. We can't give spots to people just because they're nice guys.

Two things:

TO answer the question about the luxury tax implications: a 3rd year player at the league minimum has $30k of his contract (which is $855,000) paid by the league and the Cs would pay the tax on the amount they pay the player. Essentially, $60k of the team's cost are deferred.

Secondly... to those wishing to share their support of Leon, there are 550+ signatures at this online Powe-tition: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/powe-tition/

No offense I love you and all, but that petition is bullcrap. The owners etc are doing a great job they don't need us to petition for an injured player. If nothing better comes along then when Powe's healthy we should sign him not before then.

Obviously, I disagree.
