Gary Tanguay's Grant Hill updates

Post#1 » by Fencer reregistered » Wed Jul 8, 2009 11:43 pm

On Twitter, Tanguay calls attention to the fact that Donny Marshall disagrees w/ him re: where Hill will end up:

http://twitter.com/Gary_Tanguay

Last actual Tanguay article as of this posting seems to be:

http://www.csnne.com/wickedgoodsports/g ... ll-update/

Right or wrong, Tanguay seems to be being pretty responsible about this story.

And then he somes with a piece like this:
Today was quiet on the Big Baby front. I talked with Marc Spears of the Globe at Fenway. He was attending the game to see his hometown A’s. He was proudly sporting his A’s hat.
Marc brought up the fact that Baby’s destination may depend on where Antonio McDyess ends up. If McDyess goes to San Antonio then Baby perhaps goes to Detroit or Orlando. I do know that Detroit’s boss Joe Dumars loves Baby’s game. I should note that Dumars has already dished out a ton of money for Ben Gordon and Charllie Villanueva. This may have an impact how how much the Pistons could offer Davis.
I do not buy that Orlando has lost interest in Baby depsite what Otis Smith, the GM of Orlando says.
According to reports out of Arizona the Knicks have increased their offer to Grant Hill. One year at five million or three at ten million. Donny Marshall said on Monday night’s editon of Sports Tonight that he thought Phoenix was back in the mix. The Celtics can only offer the 1.9 million bi-annual exception to Hill. We will see if the most important thing for him is get a ring or to pad his bank account before he calls it a career.

what on earth would the knicks want Hill for 3 years for?

And does anyone know how much $ Detroit has left after the Gordon and Charlie signings?

How true - I pretty much have stopped reading columns about the Celtics and just rely on the forum for news and views. HFBoards for Bruins news and views. The worst poster here seems to know more about the Celtics than a Dan Shaunhessy (or however you spell it) or most of the other reporters out there doing a half assed job covering all sports.

I *think* on sportscenter they said it was 4mil. But they may opt to not use on a multi-year deal in case they make that Rip/Boozer trade. That way they'd have another crack at a top free agent.

Tangmeister says C's are working on signing Hill tonight!
A league source told me while the Knicks have increased their offer to Grant Hill the Celtics are working on signing Hill tonight.

Do the knicks sell out their games? If not I can see why they might want Hill. The name alone will sell tickets and make the team seem better to the casual fan. Moot point if they sell out just for being in NY though.

That's what I was thinking. I wonder if Gary will have anymore "inside source" type updates?

Hemingway I do not believe that 36 year old Grant Hill is going to help the knicks sell tickets. At this point he is a solid bench player for most teams.
Reggie stood out like a sore thumb no tattoos no agenda no chirping nothing Just a guy who could score at will He played college ball at Northeastern he replaced Larry as Celtics captain he belonged to Boston.
And I still miss him. Even now.

If Grant Hill signs with the Knicks it means it was a non-basketball decision. Grant Hill's decision has nothing to do with money. If Grant Hill chooses the Knicks it would mean the rest of his NBA career would be non-relevant. He basically would just fade away.

I think Grant is trying to jam us into a S&T. He wants someone to match the money the Knicks are offering him. I think if he really wanted to go to the Knicks he would have already signed but I can imagine him feeling like he can't just go back to PHX for the same money and he can't go to Boston for less money than NY is offering and a bench role. I know he is 36 but he also missed about 4 years of his career.

If Phoenix was willing we could do a S&T with TA that would get Grant 3.2 mil for 3 years that would be about 9.6 mil. TA is nothing special but if they are unwilling to give Hill a second year or use the MLE then they can use TA for the season they do need 14 players.

I believe Hill will sign where his wife wants him to sign. It seems his wife is the one dictating where he should go. And that's sad.

It definitely looks like it... seriously, this guy has one or 2 years left in his profession she should let him reach the top (winning a ring) then they can go wherever she wants

Tanguay update:

Gary_Tanguay: Mark Spears just said that Ray Allen has been in the ear of Grant Hill trying to sell Hill on Boston.

and..

Gary_Tanguay: We expect an answer tomorrow on Grant Hill. His agent told Mark Spears that all three teams-Ny Bos and Phx are in the mix.

Well, unless she's a lot younger than he is, she feels the clock ticking on her career as well. Also, he can be a lot bigger help to her career while he's still playing.

Listening to Hill talk, it doesn't sound like he is a guy who is all about winning and is dying for that one last chance at a title and the idea of becoming a Celtic:
Playing for the Celtics will guarantee a chance at a championship, but Hill isn’t thrilled by the prospect of coming off the bench.

“I know going to Boston, it would be great winning and all that,” Hill said, “but I’ve missed so much basketball and missed so many years, I want to play. I want to get out there, lace ’em up and play.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/10/sport ... .html?_r=1

I don't think he's coming here after reading that article.

“I’ve been through a whole lot. I’m certainly at the end, and part of me feels I would kick myself if I didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to play here.”

Gosh, Grant, how 'bout a few boots to the backside for not taking advantage of the opportunity to retire with an NBA Championship ring?
