Bench replacements

Post#1 » by snowman » Sun Jul 12, 2009 7:20 pm

At the start of FA we had four positions to come available due to ending contracts:
Moore
Davis
Powe
Marbury

We (thankfully) replaced Moore with Sheed. Big step in right direction. But only first step IMHO

I would like to see us resign Davis
Some on this board fill like there would not be enough minutes to go around if we did, but I feel like there would be plenty with trying to keep KG, Perk and Sheed fresh. If we don't resign him I would like to see someone like Drew Gooden, Chris Wilcox, Melvin Ely, or Sheldon Williams signed (for vet min) to be the fourth big in front of Scal. (I'll talk about Scal later) Again, only of we don't resign Davis, I would rather have Davis back though.

Powe was one of my favorites on this team, and I will miss him, but we all knew that there would be no way we could keep two undersized PF's. We all also realize that this spot needs to be a big three to back up Pierce. I had hopes for Grant Hill, but that didn't work out, and it was probably for the best anyway. I don't think this spot is going to be filled with the LLC, it will more than likely need to be filled by trade. I would like to see a two or three for one with our expirings (Scal, Allen and Pruitt for Andres Nocioni) I really think Walker is ready for some run here, and can be that 10 to 15 min guy to spell Pierce. Jamario Moon has been mentioned, but I just as soon give the time to Walker.

Marbury will not be back. He has burned this bridge, sadly. I had hign hopes for him also, but with talk of Tyronne Lue in the mix, I just don't see Marbury back. I'm not thrilled with Lue, but it would be better than House at the point (he needs to stay at SG) and better than Pruitt at this point also. I would just as soon see Bobby Jackson, Brevin Knight or a soon to be released Jammal Tinsely, or Flip Murry as a swing Guard or even Jason Williams, who is trying to get back in the NBA.

I also see Swift, Hudson and Karl getting an invite to camp, but very small chance of doing anything with it. The exception being Swift. We need a young 7 footer, and Ainge has always liked him. If he has anything at all in him, he could win a spot, esp. if we do a two or three for one trade.

By turning down Ainge's offer and basicly saying he would go over seas before taking his offer. Now his pride won't let him back into the offer with his tail between his legs. Danny called his bluff, and Marbs now has got to except an offer over seas or take Ainge's offer. I think he'll go over seas first, tjust to save face, and make more money selling his shoe.

Heres how I see it ...

Rondo needs a backup. I think the two best options as of right now will be Bobby Jackson or Jamaal Tinsely. Jackson can handle the ball and create some offense when Rondo goes to the bench, which was usually when our scoring droughts occurred last season. Tinsely is more of a 'run an offense' PG. Both are veterans and can provide quality backup minutes IMO. Rondo will most likely play 35+ mpg, so the backup wont be asked of too much. So redicoulus ideas of Andre Miller wont be neccesary. I also like a player like Anthony Johnson.

I like the combination of Ray Allen and Eddie House at the SG position. Ray should have a much more consistent year this year, and hopefully he can get his health to 100%. Eddie House should never have to play the PG position, he is a SG. His job is to come off the bench and provide instant offense, hitting open shots. He is an energy guy, not someone who should have top run an offense.

Rasheed Wallace will backup up both Garnett and Perkins. He will play well over 20 minutes a game IMO. So, signing BBD will be a good thing, but not something we desperatly need. Signing a 4th big to the team, someone who can rebound and defend, and knows his role is needed. Powe will hopefully be back towards the end of the season, or next season atleast. I think its OK to let go of Baby. I dont think he will be nearly as effective of a player playing only 14-16 mpg. A player like a Joe Smith would be good. This will be our "PJ Brown" type player.

The major issue I believe is finding a backup for Pierce. We need some who can provide instant offense, some to play the "Pierce" role for the 2nd unit. I really like Marquis Daniels, or somehow a trade to get Travis Outlaw. Yes, they might not defend as well as others, but they can score. We already have a top notch TEAM defense in place here, we dont need individual "defenders", ie Bruce Bowen, etc. Some who can come off the bench and score buckets, and extend Pierces rest time.

A bench of Jackson, House, Daniels, Wallace, and possibly BBD seems good to me.
