Detroit clearing cap for BBD?

Detroit traded Arron Afflalo(notes) and Walter Sharpe(notes) to Denver for a future second-round pick, a move that creates another $1.8 million in salary cap space for the Pistons, a league source said Monday.

Hope Big Baby Davis isn't their target. If Pistons give BBD close to the MLE then the Celtics might not match. No sign and trade, no Big Baby the Celtics get nothing. Not a good scenario IMO.

Here's my best attempt at figuring out how much cap room Detroit has based on the CBA - if anyone can improve this, thanks for the further details. Assuming that the media report that Gordon got $55M over 5 years, the way they can best use as little cap as possible is to give him the maximal annual raises of 8%. This means he would start at approx $9.4M and with 8% raises over the next 5years end up at 12.8M. For Charlie V, assuming the media report of $35Mat 5 years is right, he would start at 6M and end up at 8.0M after 5 years (8% raises). Adding these numbers to Sham's salary figure for Det ($37.3M), subtracting out Afffalo and Sharpe, adding in Austin Day 15th pick first round cap hold ((1.3982M), adding in four roster hold spots at $457,588 (if need to have at least 12 guys on the payroll - if you don't, you have to add in the league min rookie salary for any guys less than 12) would put Det at approx $4.05 below the salary cap of $57.7M. Would the Celts match this??

Not sure if the numbers are correct, but lets say they are. 4m for Davis? Depends on the years, IMO. I am guessing they don't.

After the recent signings of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva, Detroit will have an estimated $3.5 million in cap space after completing this deal.

Among the top available big men still available on the free-agent market are Boston Celtics restricted free agent Glen Davis and unrestricted free agent Drew Gooden.

Dumars stated that we had less than 2 million dollars before this trade. 1.8 or so. This trade freed up another 1.8 or so but it also got rid of two players so now Detroit will have 2 extra cap holds at whatever the leagues minimum salary is because they don't have enough players signed.

I have our caproom at right around 3 million dollars which tells me that Dumars probably did this to set up a trade rather than to sign someone as a free agent.

I think the Piston's target is Boozer with a trade, but if that doesn't work they'll make their best offer to BBD.

Edit: Maybe, Dumars is after Boozer *and* BBD. That might would mean Maxiell might be in an offer to the Jazz.

IMO, it's BBD. They wouldnt of had to clear space for Boozer, they could have involved them in the trade or any other player on the team.

They clear it to sign a FA and Dumars is in love with BBD as we all know. I expect a 4M$ - MLE offer any time now from Detroit to BBD.

My guess is that they are targeting a guard seeing how they only have Stuckey and Hamilton under contract now.

from the Detroit forum:

The Pistons have traded Arron Afflalo and Walter Sharpe to the Nuggets for a future second-round pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

It would have been nice to pick up a first rounder, but I like this deal. Detroit has a crowd at shooting guard and small forward, so Afflalo wouldn’t have seen many minutes. And Sharpe didn’t show enough to give indication he can be a player in this league.

Here’s how the salary chart looks now:

Player 2009/10
Richard Hamilton $11,625,000
Tayshaun Prince $10,324,380
Ben Gordon $9,000,000
Charlie Villanueva $6,000,000
Jason Maxiell $5,000,000
Kwame Brown $4,100,000
Rodney Stuckey $1,805,040
Fabricio Oberto $1,800,000
Austin Daye $1,398,200
Will Bynum $825,497
TOTALS: $51,878,117

The Pistons also have two roster charges of $457,588 because they have few than 12 players. I’m not sure if each disappears as the team acquires a player or if it’s after the player acquired. But for now, Detroit’s total cap number is $52,793,293.

The salary cap is set at $57.7 million, so the Pistons have $4,906,077 in cap room.

Do the Celtics resign Big baby at $4.9 million? I don't think so.
