Orlando to match for Gortat (via Hoopshype)

How does that effect the BBD situation?

Does Dallas persue him?

Do they match for Bass now?

Too bad for us. (Ditto for Cleveland et al.) I was hoping they'd be stingier. :(

Nice to see Otis Smith do good old Cuban like that. Bass was unrestricted, Mavs got fleeced a bit. I guess they could go after Baby but they didn't seem that interested in the first place they seem to want a real center. I would think they would kick the tires on Boozer before gettting in on Davis. It would also seem pretty ridiculous for them to have to pay more for Davis than ORL paid for Bass who was their player.

Bass was unrestricted. He's a Magic now. (ha that sounds weird, damn non plural team names)

Interesting move from Otis Smith and I think it's a good one. They add Bass and keep Gortat for their front line. Dallas is in trouble now. Do they really want to pay BBD the $$ it would cost so that we won't match and then have him and Dirk as their 4's and no improvement at the 5 spot?

Nobody wants Big Baby to play PF, the attraction is that he is an effective offensive option at the center spot. The Mavs have a shot blocker/rebounder in Dampier, what Davis gives any team is mobile player with range who can hold his ground at the 5 spot. He is an average PF but he is actually a pretty good center and they are pretty rare.

This is also why teams hate signing offer sheets. No way the Magic matched this offer the day it was signed, same for Milsap. But as time goes by and teams have to think about what it will take to replace the player and how you can use him in a trade down the road, if it is less than 10 mil for a rotation player it is difficult to let them go.

This was a surprise to me. There aren't more than 10 mpg behind DH12, and I don't think Gortat can play PF. maybe they will try. I like Gortat but I think the Mavs overpaid to try to take him away, and now the Magic are stuck with the contract.

But it does make them a better team. Gortat is a good player.

On BBD, does this make it more likely we will match BBD's offer? Probably, just to keep up with the Joneses (or in this case the Smiths).

Magic now have 7 pretty good players -- starters, whichever of Pietrus/Bass isn't a starter, and Gortat.

w/o BBD the Cs have 7 pretty good players too, and some would dispute House.

Cavs have LBJ, Shaq, Z, Varajeo, Delonte, Mo, Parker, Wally -- 8, unless I'm missing somebody.

BBD is needed. And the need doesn't stop there.

Can someone clear something I have never really understood about offer sheets, say the player signs a four year deal from another team and their existing team matches, does that mean the player is automatically signed to their existing team? Or can they choose not to sign it, play the final year of their old contract and become unrestricted the following season?

I'm sorry but Orlando is friggen nuts for this matching of his contract.

Why in God's name would you pay him almost 7M$ to back up Dwight Howard and play 13 minutes pg, which is how much he played last season.

Absolutely ridiculous!!!

I fell in love w/Gortat during the playoffs vs us. I was hoping we'd make a run at him. However, for 13 mpg and 7M$, I am beyond dumbfounded. Almost as dumbfounded as Gortat himself was when he found out it was matched.

According to his agent, Gortat was "very, very dissapointed"

Because he adds depth, can play alongside Dwight a little bit more often, and most importantly, because he becomes a very tradeable asset.
