Tony Allen, Giddens, Walker- who goes?

Post#1 » by Gant » Sat Jul 18, 2009 1:12 pm

With the acQUISition of Marquis Daniels the Celtics have very few developmental minutes for back up wings. Pierce and Ray Allen will probably play around 32 minutes each and Daniels should be in the mid to high 20s, leaving only a bit of time for ONE of Walker, Giddens, or Tony Allen.

All three have expiring contracts which could be valuable so none will be cut.

Maybe one of these guys will be packaged in a Daniels sign and trade. If that's the case Larry Bird might get some say in the matter. One way or another though I bet all three deep back-up wings won't be on the roster in November.

The rotation is solidifying but the deep bench is unguessable.

Bird is interested in TA or Scal. I guess we can't do much about it. Ainge would like to see Pruitt and Giddens go and keep big contracts for another much-needed trade. I think we are very loaded with 10 players including Walker and Davis that would leave four spots open if Ainge is successful with two trades. He could use that one spot to get Powe back and promise him a full MLE next summer.

I could see us keeping all 3 of them if they don't go in a s&t. Daniels has been injury prone, so it would be good to have some depth behind him. TA will be our 4th wing unless he goes in a trade. Walker/Giddens are still eligible to go down to the D-League and develop there. If either develop enough they can replace TA as the 4th wing or used in a trade later in the season.

TA is one of the worse players in the league. I stand by that. No player in recent memory has shown such a lack of improvement it's scary. He constantly makes the same mistakes over and over. He has absolutely no jump shot after 4 years in the league. It's embarrassing.

Giddens I don't have an opinion on because I haven't seen him enough in actual NBA games.

Walker is going to be a rotation player in this league for the next decade. I just hope it's with us. He is super athletic, can defend, can rebound and can defend multiple positions as shown last year with us. If he ever gets a half way decent jumper, look out.

TA is the obvious choice--he's going one way or the other, either in the Daniels deal or another deal. Giddens is the next most likely, though he has no value in any sense of value--not as a player or as a contract, so he probably stays in the end. I still think they like Walker and he'll be used as insurance in case Daniels gets another injury.

I don't think any of them necessarily have to go. It's just they'll be battling it out for pretty limited minutes. Walker hopefully will get some burn behind Pierce, because Daniels is really better at the 1/2 spots.

How do you know what Ainge wants? From what I understand, Ainge loves Giddens, more than Walker.

Keep Giddens and Walker. Bye bye TA and Scals if possible.

Walker is the only one of the 3 who i think might go on to have a good nba career, dont forget he was still recoving from knee surgery last season he should be more athletic this year. Giddons has been a knucklehead since he was at kansas great tools, can't figure it out. TA has it 3/4ths figured out but makes inceredibly stupid decisions and gets hurt all the time. Can't stand bad TA, i know good TA is pretty good but bad TA is out there more often, however he as an expiring contract so we probably keep him till the break and package him in a deal with veal for someone better on a team looking to get under the 2010 cap.

apparently its going to be scal and ta.

If the Pacers and the Celtics work out a sign-and-trade involving Marquis Daniels, Indiana could end up landing Tony Allen and Brian Scalabrine.

The Boston Herald reported on Saturday that the Celtics could offer the Pacers a number of expiring contracts in a sign-and-trade, including those of Allen and Scalabrine.

According to Chad Ford on his twitter last night this is the Celtic offer: http://twitter.com/chadfordinsider ;; Celts are hooking up with Marquis Daniels for their swingman. They've been trying to trade with Indy for Walker, Pruitt and Allen. But if they can't do the deal, they'll just sign him to their $2 million bi-annual exception.

That deal makes sense for the Pacers it allows them a rent to own deal of 3 young guys with no guaranteed contracts beyond the 2009-10 season. If any of the 3 impress enough you re-sign them cheaply.

Or when Dunleavy comes back you shop Allen's cheap expiring contract as a filler in a trade. It also allows the Pacers to move Travis Diener's contract since the Pacers will sign Earl Watson officially as soon as he clears waivers.

The LLE is $1.9 million, Tony (2.5) + Scal (3.4) = $5.9 mill...big difference. Marquis at $1.9...great deal. Marquis at $6.0 million...not such a great deal. Marquis at $3 to $4 million...just about right.

Frankly, I think the offer will be something like Tony *OR* Scal + *maybe* Pruitt, Walker OR Giddins...giving a salary of ~$3 to $4 million for Daniels. If Bird doesn't take what Danny offers, then give Daniels the $1.9 for one year, and look to move our expiring contracts for picks or a player down the road.

I like him for the LLE. Then we could use the assets at the deadline for someone of need, whatever that might be.

That would be bad. It would mean we're overpaying Daniels.

if we trade TA/Walker/Pruitt for Daniels...it allows us to still use the LLE on a Joe Smith/Chris Wilcox type---or a PG....plus, if we do sign another big---maybe the C's are insured against Big Baby moving on....if Daniels signs for the LLE---then we can still trade a few pieces at the deadline---Win/Win all around---especially if TA is out of here-!!
