Bobby Swift or Shelden Williams?

It is the offseason and thus the perfect time for an end of the bench player poll/comparison/discussion thread...

Simple question...Whom do you like better? Williams or Swift?

There is still possibility that Swift makes the team, so we might end up with both of them. Both are underachievers and have struggled so far in their NBA careers. One is a big time college player, married to the best female basketball player and the other is a high school prospect and Danny`s long lost son...Who do you think is the better player and the better fit for this team?

Let the best man win!

I think this thread has potential!

Not a huge fan of Robert Swift. I wouldn't be surprised if Shelden Williams, Robert Swift and Big Baby are all on the Celtics next season. Robert Swift would develop in the D-League and provide depth if someone gets hurt.

I expect the Celtics to go with 14 players with Hudson & Swift playing in the D-League.

Give me a **** break... :banghead:

Are you and Stiff brothers?Or maybe cousins? :D

ROBERT STIFF SUCKS! MARK BLOUNT IS BETTER THAN HIM...SHAMMOND WILLIAMS PLAYING CENTER, BLINDFOLDED, WITH ONE LEG, PLAYING ON STILETTOS, IS BETTER THAN ROBERT SWIFT!

Hell I'll go as far as saying playing 4 on 5 is better than having Swift on the floor...

I think center is more of a position of need for us. But having said that, I still want Williams over Swift on this team. I think Shelden may be able to surprise some people if given the chance. He can play D and rebound which is always something a team like ours wants. With Cliff Ray coaching him I don't see why he can't become our Leon Powe if he puts in the effort like Leon did. I understand that is a big IF though.

Swift is not as bad as some of you think. He looked completely out of shape in SL but was still decent in the first few minutes on the floor. He has a nice touch, has the length, he just needs to get his conditioning back...

Of course, with the way basketball is evolving speed and athleticism are becoming more and more important. Williams has a huge edge in those but skill wise he is not on Swift`s level...

I like Shelden because I think we need some toughness and strength down low but he is undersized. It would be nice to have another 7 footer on the bench and Swift could be that guy...

I used to be as high on Swift as anyone, but he was slow before the knee injuries. This last knee injury may have put the nail in the coffin on his NBA career. He is just so damn slow. He looked very promising in his second season with the Sonics.

Swift is pretty bad. I was willing to give him a shot, but Williams is def better.

Shelden Williams was a nice inexpensive pickup. I still think they will get swift on the fifteen man roster. There is still one roster spot open unless you consider Hudson having made the team which is possible. I think swift will get invited to camp that last spot could be between hudson and swift. ffor the 15th spot on the roster. C's need to dump tony allen off the roster he is pretty much done as a celtic. I think Allen could be better on another team hopefully he gets shipped toa team in the daniels trade if there is a third team included.

If Baby is not on the roster I think the odds are pretty good you get both Williams and Swift. Neither can be sent down to the DL (only players with < 3 years NBA experience can)...if I have read that correctly, so both would be on the end of the bench.

Doc looks over and sees both of them sitting there, who does he wave into the game?

Williams is what he is, and it's not likely he's ever going to be more that what he is right now. He can develop a bit more, but his big'ol head is already bumping against his personal ceiling. What Williams can do, I think, is give the C's the 6 to 12 minutes of F/C they'll need night in and night out. He will score a little bit off put-backs, drop off dunks, maybe even an occasional pick and roll, hook shot, 10 foot jumper, or drive, but mostly he'll box out, rebound and play some scrappy defense...block a few shots, give some hard fouls. Williams will never be a star, like he was at Duke, but he *can* be a lunch pail type of role player off the bench who eats up minutes, doesn't make big mistakes, and gives *consistent* effort and production. He might even be okay in a substitute starter role for a few games, but at his best he'd be a flat tire on our starting five....we'd still roll along, but it would be a drag. Williams is low risk, low reward.

Swift actually looked like an OK C, when he was healthy...for the 20 (or so) games he was healthy. And yes, he might be stiff, but I don't think he is a really a *stiff*...just fragile and slow and still young. Still very, very, young! What Swift still has, that Williams doesn't, is potential to get a lot better. Now it's almost certainly not knock your socks off better, probably not even starter better, but he does have a reasonable shot at reaching backup center better. If Swift ever does reach his ceiling, he would give the C's everything Williams can give, and a lot more, but it's a long shot he makes it to his natural ceiling...injuries, attitude(?), effort(?). Swift is high risk, high reward.

So, who does Doc call? Williams now. Maybe Swift later...if he progresses, stays healthy, and achieves consistency.

Having said that, I'm not voting either way in this poll because I think it is too early to say. I think we can project what Williams would bring, but not what Swift would (eventually) bring into the game. I'd like to give both a shot (Williams for now, Swift for later), but there is no both choice. :)

I am no fan of Shelden Williams, and I actually always thought Bob Swift was worth a look, I like center a who can pass the ball. But he still seems pretty far away in his overall game, he was getting used by Roy Hibbert of all people.

As for Williams I am going to put on my green tinted glasses and hope that he can find his inner Ben Wallace and that in Boston's defensive system were he will likely be asked to be less aggressive and be more of a space eater and keep himself between his man and the hole that he can become the defensive presence everyone assumed he would be coming out of Duke.

Jackie MacMullan reported a couple of weeks ago on CSNE that Antoine Walker weighs over 295 lbs right now. Robert Swift could probably beat him up the court. Antoine's basketball days are over.

I like the idea of having them both as oppose to saying later that you'd wished you'd had him instead of him by mid-season. As soon as I'd read that S. Williams was signed... I thought: What about Swift? Or what happens to Swift now, is he still an option?

Danny loves 7-foot stiffs. I wouldn't rule Bobby the Tat out.

You make this as if it is a sleight on Danny. Any gm has to take a chance on big guys. Bigs are weird because sometimes they find themselves when they are 25-30 and can be serviceable. It's not like he's counting on Swift as the starting center...he'd be looking at him as a project 15th man.

Robert Swift was pretty solid his 2nd year in the league, he was pretty agile and had a great vertical leap. Ever since his knee injury he seems a lot slower and less athletic than he used to be. He didn't have a great deal of skill before his injury problems and now that he's lost a step his effectiveness is severely marginalized.
