What about Brevin Knight?

Hi,I'm new here. I'm a big C's fan and love to discuss about the team and was thinking in Brevin Knight.
A vet free agent, pass first PG with a high assist per turnover ratio and who would fill our backup PG needs, he is still waiting for an offer and we can made him a vet min offer i think...

Or I'm Wrong?

He'd be fine, in my view. He's a real pass first PG as you noted.

I think Danny won't address the backup PG spot until after the Baby and Daniels matters are resolved. If we keep Baby, and use the LLE on Daniels, then we're looking at these vet min types. The possibility still exists that we get the backup PG via trades involving Baby or Daniels though.

First off, welcome to the board. I'm glad to see someone newer post a sensible idea at least.

Having said that, I'm not sure if you're right or wrong. But personally, I don't think Brevin Knight is a good fit to play backup PG for us. Even if his best days weren't behind him, which I'm sure they are, he is almost as bad of a shooter as Rondo. I would like our backup to be able to hit open shots.

I think having House/Daniels back up the 1-3 spots will work out. If Rondo plays about 36 minutes, and Ray and Paul both play 32 or so, that leaves 44 minutes or so for the two of them to split each game. If Daniels and House enter the game at the same time, there's no reason to think House can't play SG on offense while Daniels brings up the ball and dumps it off to Pierce or KG to run the offense.

Rondo 36 / House 12
Ray 32 / House/Daniels 16
Pierce 32 / Daniels 16

That seems plausible to me. Then you figure we have JR, Bill Walker, and maybe a vet min player signing before the season starts for depth.

for some reason I remember reading that Brevin Knight is a locker room cancer, if that's the case, I'd pass.

The annual how about the Celtics sign Brevin Knight thread.

Danny Ainge wasn't interested before I doubt he is now.

Jason Williams, if he can pass a few rigorous physical tests, should be the man of choice. He cannot play defense, no, but the play making and shooting would tremendously help our bench.

I seem to remember Knight being very focused on wanting to be a starter, or get near-starter minutes. Now, maybe his expectations have ratcheted down due to the lack of interest around him, but if we are going to go with a PG, I'd rather just re-up with Marbury.

Like C17P also noted, he's been out there for each of the last 3-4 years and seemingly every time someone brings him up, but Ainge has not even sniffed at him. Guess he just doesn't think that much of his abilities.

Yeah, I remember hearing that he's a real jerk.

Didn't we already pass on him a year or two ago? I also heard he's not a good lockerroom guy. Pass

This is a post that comes up every off-season in the last few years and for some reason never materializes.
Ainge must know something we don't.

Marbury is still a possibility.

The Cs, like no other team, can trust him to calm down just long enough to do a gut check and figure out whether he'd be sufficiently content with his role.

Similarly, the Cs like no other team can have the expectation-setting discussion "Well, if you play exactly as you did last year, X minutes is realistic. If you do everything the same but your shot starts falling -- at which point of course you'll make the correct decision to take it more -- Y minutes is more likely."

Brevin Knight doesn't work so well alongside Daniels as neither can shoot the trey. You could say the same about Ramon Session but Sessions is a better player.

Ainge (despite the Rondo pick) never struck me as a fan of 'pass first' PGs. What that phrase most of the time means is "can't shoot." When you play ball at a high level its not a given that you will get good shot opportunities. Thus guys who pass them off when they have them hurt the team as a whole..

Ainge was a fairly complete skilled baller - as was DJ. This is the kind of player he likes to acquire.. Sure normally the NBA problem is guys who 'force' up shots out of the flow of the offense. But that doesn't mean a can't shoot PG isn't an issue.. Doc Rivers was another guy who could hit a J..

Stockton is a HOF guy because he was the rare "pass first" PG who actually COULD shoot.

I disagree with the characterization that pass first guys are usually 'can't shoot' guys.

Some are, some aren't. Rondo certainly fits that bill right now. If he ever gets to the point that he can knock down his jumper at a good clip, then we'll see whether he remains pass first. Magic Johnson couldn't shoot well when he first got to the league but developed a fairly reliable jumper and remained pass first. Tiny Archibald could always score, and once led the league in both scoring and assists in the same year (how remarkable is that?!?), but ended up being what I'd call a pass first guy. There have been many. It's really a mixed bag on the pass first guys though, some of 'em can shoot, some can't.

Any other point guard we bring in is likely going to have to fight Daniels for primary ball handler off the bench and House for positional minutes, unless they're good enough to really displacing some of those two's minutes. Meaning, whoever we bring in is going to need to accept a very small role with the ability to bring something new to the bench and to be able to get more minutes if Rondo ever goes down. Knight has the talent, but IIRC he's always been a me-first type of person, even though he's a pass-first player. I remember him complaining about his role and looking for a contract while in Charlotte. He's also not good enough to take any of Daniels/House's minutes outright. Only someone like Hinrich could do that as a potential possibility, albeit incredibly unlikely.

If Marbury was willing to come back, he'd be ideal in that role. Tyronn Lue would be solid too. Otherwise, I think we're just going to go in with Daniels/House and maybe a little bit of Hudson.

Marbury will come back. I just can't see how that move doesn't make the most sense for us and him.

The guys your talking about Magic and Tiny were superstars HOF games. That being said Tiny wasn't really considered pass first. Nor was Isiah..I will give you Magic and Stockton..

But when message board people talk about getting some random lessor player who is "pass first" it almost always means 'can't shoot." Orien Greene was called pass first. So is Rondo. So was Omar Cook. So is Brevin Knight.

Its easy to be pass first when the other option isn't available. Moreover if you pass away more shot opportunities your "passing numbers" go way up. This is why personally I am very wary of players given the pass first designation. Their limitations become seen as strengths..

One of the first things they teach kids about balling is the 'triple threat" position. If its just a 'double' threat position for you - your a lessor player.

Three years ago: yes

The last few seasons he has been really really bad. And he will be 34 in november. This would appear to be the end for Brevin Knight.

I still think Marbury makes the most sense if we're going to bring in a PG. He is reasonably cheap, already has started to learn the offense and if he finds his shot again would be arguably our best bench player.
