The best starting power forward/center tandems?

Post#1 » by Cyclical » Mon Aug 17, 2009 7:34 pm

From an ESPN article:
Name the best starting power forward/center tandems in the NBA.

You could begin with Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. After the Lakers' duo, there's only one other pair of starters who each recorded a PER greater than 18:

David West and Emeka Okafor.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-43-49/The-High-Grade-Sleepers.html?body=As%20far%20as&prosaction=newpost&status=ok

In my mind it's clearly KG-Perk. I think they're clearly better than Pau-Bynum and yet rarely mentioned. Have PER stats been clouding people's minds? Has defense lost it's place as a significant measuring stick for big men?

Can anyone find a better combo in the league today? I can't.

I do like Dwight/Lewis combination.
When KG is at 100% then with Perk are the best in the league.
NFL fans are now feeling what NBA fans been living for a while...

Not only that, Okafor has been sort of a disappointment thus far in his career...

I wouldn't call Okafor a true disappointment. Maybe for #2 overall but he been pretty much what he was cracked up to be. He never really had that much worlds of upside and hasn't really improved much, I'll give you that. But he is what he is. He's stayed relatively healthy the last couple years which is good because he has had his problems leading up to the draft and in his first few years.

Yes, I should have qualified, for a #2 pick, he's a bust, but he is what he is and he's been that, for sure...an undersized center with a limited offensive game...

Okafor has also been playing on some pretty crap teams. He is going to look a whole lot better in NO than he did with Charlotte.

This. I expect his number to really increase with CP3.

Talent wise I guess you could argue Gasol and Bynum is the best combo, but in terms of on court performance together I would take KG and The Beast over anybody.

Bosh/Bargnani
KG/ Wallace or Perk
Blake Griffin/ Chris Kaman or Marcus Camby

The best combo in the NBA, IMO, has to be Perk/KG from a defensive perspective, but Bynum/Gasol offensively is pretty damn good, and Gasol has improved his defensive intensity over the past season. It's a tough call, but it's definitely between those two, IMO.

I don't Pau Bynum are the best because of Odom who comes in and plays a significant amount of minutes. The same goes for us this season as Rasheed may come in and play a great amount of minutes in the rotation.
The Raptors have a good one though. Chris Bosh a 22-10 player and Andre Bargnani a player that averages 15+ points and shoots lightouts from beyond the arch.

But when it comes to Big man rotation I would have to say the Celtics and Lakers are tied. Both teams don't really heavily depend on them though.

Pierce+Allen and Kobe.

KG and Perk seem to play very well together. I think the fact that Drew has been injuried so much hasn't allowed Gasol and Drew to have that great chemistry when they are on the court at the same time. I believe Gasol and Odom have played more minutes together than Drew and Gasol. Odom and Gasol play together in crunch time when it matters most. I think PF/C that he should have said is Gasol and Odom.

Sheed is better than Perks. You could easily argue that Sheed/KG is the best C/PF combo.

I think the Magic, Celtics or Lakers (Gasol/Odom) have the best.
