Ray Allen said Friday night that he would like to negotiate a contract extension with the Celtics beyond this season. Allen, who turned 34 in July, is entering the final year of a five-year, $85 million deal he signed with the team formally known as the Seattle SuperSonics. Allen will earn $19.7 million this season.

"Of course, but it will be dealt with in its time," said Allen, when asked whether he would like to play more years in Boston. "My job doesn’t change. I gotta go out and do the same things. We get paid to play basketball. We’re all in a great situation so we can’t look past this year."

That's good to hear IMO. I love Ray and want him to retire here with Pierce (I'd like to see KG play a year in Minny, then retire there...but that's just me).

I wouldn't like to deal Ray... but you just can't estimate what might happen. And he's a great mixture of expiring money and "feel good" quality for a franchise that deals a star player away.

So I can understand that Ray won't get extended until next season. I'd give him 8-10 per year.

It seems Ray Allen is establishing permanent roots in Boston. I'm pretty sure he would like nothing more than to retire a Celtic.

Of course he does. He's grossly overpaid. Extremely overpaid. And Ray Allen runs as a businessman, he won't stay here for a penny less then what he believes he can gain.

Who cares what allen wants? This is not about Jesus getting what he wants. It has to be about what is best for Boston. The season needs to play out and then it will become clear what needs to be done. I can't imagine it would make much sense to sign Ray for more than a year or two and $5-6 million seems generous enough considering he won't find a better basketball situation than staying. At his age we have to be concerned about whether he can make it all the way through the playoffs. He didn't look good versus Orlando.

Jesus lived to only 33 years. Allen's already 34. As far as I'm concerned he already got his aextention.

i say trade him and that nice fat expiring deal for a piece that can help you win this year. We all know what Ray has done come playoff time the past 2 years, and that's fall apart. He is just to old. I would be happy with Tyson Chandler type player. Some big who can rebound and bang, and help us win the next few years.

Well, he was beat up last year but he was arguably the series MVP against the Lakers the year before, and if you remember the Pistons series they doubled him the whole series and then the Magic series just didn't count as we were devastated by injuries and Rondo's inability to make or dare to make an open shot pretty much killed Ray's chances.

There, that's as many excuses that I can think of in one sentence, apologies to the writer, Stephen King, my 9th grade grammar teacher up here in Maine in 1972. 8-)

OBTW, I like Ray's game still....but Chandler would be a great pick up...where would the points come from, his 7 or 8 ppg isn't gonna set the world on fire..

I'd resign him at a significant pay cut. He is not a great player anymore..

Maybe, but personally I don't think you can go into an opponent's arena during a heated playoff series and drop 50+ points (including a couple of potential game winners/savers) without being something close to a great player.

For those who don't think Allen is still a great player, how many fewer wins do you think the Celtics would have had last year if Allen had not been on the team?

^^^^ It depends on who is replacement would be.. Despite his Bulls heroics he was just awful against Cleveland and overall not much better against Orlando. Both Wally and Reddick gave him a bad time. And those are guys most fans wouldn't want on their team for free..

Some people here are hilarious. You wouldn't resign Ray Allen to more than $4 mil a year? Really? One of the greatest shooters ever, who was one of the most efficient SGs last year, and the guy who dropped 51 points on the Bulls in the playoffs and would have probably gotten you the win if Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo didn't try to be heroes?

If you really don't want him, we'll be more than glad to take him off your hands this upcoming year.

This is my complaint with Ray. He can be so inconsistant that it drives you nuts. It's ok in the regular season but when you have a small window in th playoffs it could kill you. In the regualr season last year he either shot lights out or was struggling to get 10 points. Then once playoffs came it was the same thing. He struggles to get open. has trouble with people being i n his face when he shoots.

The biggest point is this, he has a HUGE expiring deal. In this economy that could get you a lot.

I was just saying he got injured in pre-season, missed the entire year, and we had to replace his minutes from within (probably mostly Tony Allen and Eddie House). I honestly think we would have had a tough time winning 50 games.

Don't get me wrong, I know the guy is 33 years old and that he made approximately $19 million last year. Obviously, unless he maybe only wants a one year deal, he is going to have to take a pretty big pay cut to stay in Boston. Given that he was named to the all-star team last year and can still be the best player on the floor on many nights, I think something in the neighborhood of 3 years, $30 million seems fair. I just think it is hilarious that people here are saying "let's offer him MLE level money, or maybe even less, because that is all anybody else can afford to pay him anyway". I have news for these people: there are probably 20 teams in the NBA that would be willing to throw the MLE at Ray Allen next year.

I think he is definitely worth 8-10 million per year. Question is how many years? I wouldn't commit more than three.
