The Celtics also are considering adding a third point guard. Possible candidates include second-round draft pick Lester Hudson(notes) and free agents Tyronn Lue(notes), Dan Dickau(notes) and Mike Taylor(notes), who worked out at the team’s facility on Thursday.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=m ... &type=lgnslester hudson could be a solid player even though he is a prospect.
tyronn lue is a veteran who may help.
dan dickau is somebody im sure none of us want. and
mike taylor is a question mark super atheletic guard who can possibly contribute.
even though i am not a big fan of these 4 guards out of all of them i wouldn't know to to pick up if these are hte only options. i hope the celtics don't rush this because these options aren't too intriguing. so hopefully they wait it out and pick some1 legit up.

Lue is probably the best of the bunch

Those choices make me sad about the Starbury meltdown.

It's a four-way single-survivor steel cage match. No one knows who will emerge.
My bet's on Lester.

Yeah Lue has more name recognition but Hudson or Taylor could win it.

Its really up for grabs and I dont think the spot really matters. So I'd like Hudson to get it, lets see what he can do.

I am hoping we give Hudson a shot. He is fast and can shoot. If by Feb. he proves to be a bust, then we get someone else.

Not to pick nits but you are severely underselling Dan Dickau's ability, imo. He is an absolutely fantastic pick-and-roll player. He is quite proficient spotting up on the wing on the secondary break, as well. He is also quite adept at running an NBA-caliber offense in the halfcourt and operating as the pointman on the break.
Yes, he struggles defensively. Those struggles are quickness/length/strength related. He makes proper rotations and attempts to support teammates, as needed, in help defense.
The issue with Dickau before his injury with Boston is that he was sharing floor time with young players and the back-line of defense was often the sieve-like tandem of Ryan Gomes and Al Jefferson. Doc Rivers embraced his binky Delonte West (another terrible man defender-- especially against point guards) and had to protect Al Jefferson from foul trouble.
While I do like Tyronn Lue, if Rivers plans on running a ton of pick-and-rolls this year, Dickau is the better candidate. If the role is simply to sit on the inactive roster and be ready in case of injury, Lue is the better candidate.

I bet it's Lue. The Celtics are gonna need someone who's capable of going from absolutely no PT, to significant PT if Rondo gets hurt. Lue is probably the player best suited for that role.

My bet's on Dickau. For Hudson to get the gig, he needs two out of the following 3 qualities,
since Dan Dickau has 2 of them.
1. Can he run a team? Get the ball over half court, get the team in their offensive sets,
make good decisions, move with and without the ball for the offense to function smoothly.
In effect, is this guy a true point guard, or just someone to short for any other position? Of the 4 players mentioned, Dickau is best at this.
2. Can he score? Whether with a sweet 3 point shot, mid-range game, pull up jumper, pick and roll, slash and score, penetrate into the lane, whatever. Can he score? Of the 4 players mentioned, Dickau is best.
3. Can he defend other point guards? The answer is none of the 4 can, Gabe Pruitt was better than any of these 4 on defense, but Gabe Pruitt sucked at points 1 and 2. Pruitt should do better in D'Antoni's free wheeling, high speed, open court offense. But none of these 4 are any good, here. Lester may actually be the best of the lot, in this category.

^Since Hudson was number 2 in the nation in scoring, I think he's got the second item crossed off the list. I don't think it's as simple as having 2 out of those 3 qualities either, since Dickau's defense is a major red flag and IMO outweighs all of his positives.

Actually, Celticsblog had some interesting info on Mike Taylor
http://www.celticsblog.com/2009/9/12/10 ... #storyjumpThe Clippers waived him because of a numbers game... but at one point last season, Mike scored a total of 69 points in a three game span... sounds like a good gamble to me...

Another thing to keep in mind... if Dan is the guy... he will have a better defense behind him now, then that Celtics team he played for a couple of years ago... and there is no question that Dan is a very good offensive player... so Dan may be a good pick up...
If anything... the backup point guard spot might be the story this preseason... everything else is set in stone.

First of all, how much do you really know about Lester Hudson? NOBODY had mentioned his name before the draft so I'm guessing, at best, you've watched a bunch of Youtube clips. Now, to dismantle your argument entirely...
1. Dickau can't run a team anymore. That is why he played in Germany last year and was the third string PG on the Clippers the year before that. I am positive that Hudson can get the ball past half court and move without it. If he can't do those things then drafting him was a real mistake.
2. Hudson averaged 28.5 ppg (2nd most in D1), 7.9 rpg and 4.2 apg in his senior year. Dickau, in comparison, averaged 21.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg and 4.6 apg his senior year at Gonzaga. The problem, though, with comparing these statistics is that it makes Dickau look better than he actually is. Dickau has proven himself as a disappointing basketball player while his numbers deflate almost every year. At least Hudson is coming off a great senior season in college. Hudson has a bright future ahead of him and the swagger to go with it. Dickau has settled on mediocrity. He averaged 17 ppg in Germany last year. Yeah, I guess that's OK but it's been a while since he's played against very good competition on a consistent basis. Also, Dickau is one of the few NBA players that cannot dunk - it's embarrassing.
3. Lester is the best defensive player of the group because he's the most athletic. Ainge has always said that defense is easier to teach than offense. I've seen Dickau roll his ankle in person and its uglier than Carrot Top's personality.
Lester Hudson is easily the best PG prospect from this group. Dickau is terrible, Lue is not good, and Mike Taylor was already offered a contract from the Grizz.

Out of those choices, I would definitely go with Mike Taylor.

Hudson is not some 21 year old kid, he was a man competing against boys in college who in some cases were 4-5 years younger then him I was not at all impressed by him in the SL. I like mike taylor the most of those listed, he has more potential then hudson.

I agree with all your points here...
Some of the posters on this thread has some serious Hudson blinky love...I thought we were a little past that stage since we won the championship... sigh...
Truth be told... Mike Taylor seems to be ready to play backup point guard right now... Hudson may have to adjust his offensive game for the NBA. And that could take some time.
And besides... hopefully we DO get a reliable back up point so that Daniels can be the back up for PP...

Dickau is a been there, done that guy.
Lue? I wonder if the people calling for Lue have actually watched him. I did for two seasons in washington. Dude has been getting paychecks for guarding Iverson better than Fisher in the Finals, thats it. Not to mention he's a vet so he's much more expensive than Mike Taylor, who we really should be snatching up for multiple years.
Hudson is a ? , i've seen nothing and only heard what ive read. Its between him and Mike Taylor and i'm going with the guy who I know can create off the dribble.
Mike Taylor can score off the bench, and his defensive potential is high considering his athleticism and the fact that he's 6'1 with a 6'7 reach.
