OT - Replacement Refs?

Post#1 » by mrautobahn » Sat Sep 19, 2009 12:36 am

As some of you may already be aware of... the NBA just locked out the NBA referees Union...

http://www.celticsblog.com/2009/9/18/10 ... s-out-refs

The question remains... how bad can the replacement referees be? Because the "real" referees never understood this major point... people don't watch NBA games to see the referees...

In fact, I would go so far to say... the NBA referees have been killing the product last year... I can honestly point out to every single game last year where the NBA simply blew the call...

What does everyone else think?

Keeping in mind that many of the NBA teams are hurting because of the economy... you would think the NBARA would be a little understanding...

It seems the NBA did propose a reasonable contract that can be renegotiated if the economy improves... and yet somehow... the NBARA rejected it.

I didn't realize the NBA referees made this much money... beginners get $150k and the top get's $550k... wow!

I realize that it takes some skills to put up with the nonsense of some NBA players... and to be un-corruptable... but still... some of the NBA referees were simply dreadful last year...

I dunno about this one... here's hoping that nothing ruins a potentially awesome season with super-teams such as LA, Celtics, Cleveland and San Antonio...

Well, that would depend how well the NBA referee training camp goes:

If anything... due to this awful economy... it stands to reason there is a bigger pool of qualified individuals that can do the job right...

Sadly they can be worse. This same thing happened years ago. (if someone remembers the year please post it here) The refs went on strike and replacement refs were brought in. I remember the refs they brought in were horrible and made the current refs look competent.
Reggie stood out like a sore thumb no tattoos no agenda no chirping nothing Just a guy who could score at will He played college ball at Northeastern he replaced Larry as Celtics captain he belonged to Boston.
And I still miss him. Even now.

When do they hold interviews for refs? I have no experience, but I know a thing or two about basketball.

But the difference is, I can't remember a time the referees have been so dreadful, so it wouldn't have much of an effect like that, if at al.

Seriously dude... those refs are doing the job that most of us on this Celtic board would love to do for a living... meet babes, run around a lot and judge others... :)

But what these referees don't seem understand is this... they want entertainment pay and they STILL think folks pay to get in to see them workin' on the floor...

(in my opinion... referees should be seen but not heard, but hey that's just me...)

Something is wrong when some referees get over a half a million dollars for doing something many guys do on the HS level for very little...

The salary should be congruent with supply... and being a great ref isn't as rare as a KG or Lebron... any guy that can make a decision and stick with it is just as good. Seeing well obviously isn't a desired quality...

I can understand the aggravation of travel, putting up with the nonsense from players and the pay being high enough so the referees are not corruptible... wait a minute... what am I talking about?

I can't even comprehend why it should/could ever be any other way this.

That was my thinking. The refs have been brutal, how worse can it get?

Well, if they do turn out to be terrible, we can always count on Heinsohn to set them straight.

The sad thing is that I think they can be worse. I have seen some very ugly 125 foul summer league games over the years.
