Would you trade a 32 year old Pierce for Melo or do you ....

Would you trade a 32 year old Pierce for Melo or do you remain loyal to Pierce no matter what?

I sort of asked this question in the past with different people. I asked Spurs fans would they trade Tim Duncan now for Dwight Howard or would they be loyal to Duncan for what he did for their franchise and keep him no matter what.

Simply put in essence this is very similar. If the Nuggets offered you Carmelo Anthony and he signed a 8 year deal extension with the Celtics would you trade Pierce for him or would you remain loyal to Pierce no matter what?

What idiot would not trade a player for another player who's pretty much identical, except 7 years younger?

I wouldnt trade Pierce for Lebron, it just wouldnt feel right. If I was not a Celtics fan Id do it in a heartbeat.

It is a question of being loyal to the guy who has stuck with the team during bad and good times. That is the issue here.

I really don't care for Carmelo, personally. No way Carmelo is identical to Paul. Arguably more talented and is probably the better fantasy player but PP was the better player at the same age (its at least close, give PP better teammates and a better coach and...) and PP is the better player right now and will be for a few seasons IMO as long as he stays healthy.

PP for Lebron wouldn't feel right but I would do it in a heartbeat. Its laughable that Carmelo used to get compared to Lebron.

Yes, but I wouldn't feel good about it. There's no chance of Denver proposing such a trade.

No, Melo just isn't the guy I would want to dump 18-20 mil a year on, it isn't an issue of age or money. Now ask if it was Danny Granger and I might have to change my answer.

There would be a relatively long list of guys that I'd prefer over Melo.

As long as LeBron was locked up long term, I would trade KG, PP & RA for him.

This illustrates the same line of thinking people have when they say "we should have traded Bird or McHale." Yeah, I guess you should trade an aging star if you can get a younger star in return.

Except you'd never get a younger star in return.

A more realistic scenario is more like...would you trade a 32 year old Pierce for Trevor Ariza?

Of course not. But that's the kind of guy we would have gotten in return if we traded an aging McHale. I think the deal you always hear about was for Sam Perkins.

It was sweet to see the Bulls say "we don't want to wind up like the Celtics" and wind up worse...

Tough call. Pierce loves being a Celtic. Sure, he might have privately requested a trade at some point during the bad years, but it wasn't anything close to Vince Carter quitting in Toronto, or publicly demanding a deal like Kobe did from LA. I'd love to see the franchise stick with Pierce to reward his loyalty.

However, Pierce is on the wrong side of 30, and talent-wise, Melo's offensive arsenal is identical to Pierce's. Getting a younger, taller, more athletic version of Pierce would be great. Even after Ray and KG retire, a core of Melo/Rondo/Perk/Davis would still be capable of making the playoffs, and in the best case scenario, Ainge would still have cap room to add another All-Star via free agency.

As I was typing that last sentence, I just came to the realization that I'd definitely do this trade.

I said this before and got called out by another team's fan for it when I said it, but I wouldn't trade Pierce for Lebron straight up. Yes, best interest of the team says get Melo or Bron for those 7-8 years, but Pierce put the team in his best interest for longer than that when the team around him just wasn't very good. At this point, after sticking it out this long while not trying to force his way out and after winning a championship, I wouldn't move him unless he requested it. He retires in green.

I would say no and then be sure that my decision would be leaked to the press.

If that happens other players see the Celtics as an organization that respects players and sticks by them; rewards them for good service.

I like Pierce a lot, although he has sometimes driven me crazy.

Call me crazy but I really like a player like Pierce that sticks by his team his whole career. I think that if he remains a celtic his whole career he'll have a much better chance of landing a spot in the HOF, instead of chasing some extra coulpe of mills somewhere.

Pierce stuck by us when times were tough, and I want the team to stick by him when things are good.

Plus Wyc LOVES PP so this is not happening,

I would do it in a second, and you would be a fool not to. Loyalty is excellent, but you can't let it completely restrict your organization from making moves. It can be the deciding factor when a deal is close, but when it comes to trading a 32 year old star for one of the best young guys in basketball, you have to take it. Basketball is a business, and I'm sure Paul Pierce would understand.

This is the same bait babyjordan threw in our board, but he failed on our board, failed miserably. But some of you guys fell for his bait while others showed their loyalty. Props on the guys that stuck to P.P as he stayed loyal to you guys while your were down and out.

Man, the Lakers board is so defensive about the post. What a difference in replies from this board.
