Scal: "I didn't play any basketball."

Post#1 » by hairybyrd » Tue Sep 22, 2009 2:17 pm

From the Wiretap:

"I didn't play any basketball," Scalabrine told WEEI.com. "I didn't want to risk getting a concussion in that environment. So I just didn't play any basketball and then I've been playing since I got back here."

I understand that he's recovering from 3 concussions and obviously his life after basketball is more important than playing summer ball but, does anyone else find it odd that we're paying a guy $3.5 million this season to do so little? I mean, couldn't he have worked on his shooting in that time? Besides that, if he's worrying about getting concussed in practice won't he still be worrying about hitting his head in an actual, competitive, real-life basketball game? Scal is easily the highest paid "locker room guy" in the history of sports.

Scal is what he is at this point. He is 31 and is not all of a sudden going to turn in to a dead eye shooter because he praticed hard in the summer.
Reggie stood out like a sore thumb no tattoos no agenda no chirping nothing Just a guy who could score at will He played college ball at Northeastern he replaced Larry as Celtics captain he belonged to Boston.
And I still miss him. Even now.

Cripes, the guy said he didn't play basketball, which to me is running up and down the court with a bunch of other guys. He didn't say he didn't train, didn't shoot, didn't do his own drills, that's just a conclusion you're leaping to.

No point in risking yourself after three concussions. That can really mess you up. I got no problems with that. He's always been the 15th man on our roster so let him do whatever he thinks is the right thing.

He's got one year left to his NBA career. He wants to enjoy it.

I don't know why everyone jumps all over scal. A few things about scal:

You can not say that he doesn't give 100% when he is out there.

He IS a great looker room guy. Not one instance of anything negative ever. I'm sure that his high basketball IQ has helped others on the team.

He signed wit hus at a time when no one wanted to and has played the role expected of him.

His contract is not so much that it has really prevented us from signing anyone else.

When he is is we do well. I think last year we were close to undefeated in games he started or played major minutes.

He is a fan favorite.

Agree w/ Hem on all points, Scals a good man (as long as he's not attempting to drive to the hoop).....I'd of loved to see him star with John Candy in Canadian Bacon or Planes, Trains and Automobiles, I'm not sure why.....

Scal is awesome. Scal should play it safe and retire after this year. He has a future as a commentator or a coach in this sport. Like someone else mentioned, he didn't play basketball but that doesn't mean he wasn't stooting around.

Not at all attacking Scal's character - I'm sure he's a very nice person. But, if he's so important to the team then why is he included in EVERY trade rumor posted on this board? At this point in time, I would argue that the contract of Brian Scalabrine is more important to the team than the player.

I don't get it. What is so bad about Scalabrine? He played very well for the team last year. He is a very capable NBA player. I don't need any stats or stuff like that...I see it with my own eyes. He helps the team a lot.

Jesus, can we lay off the guy? Multiple concussions are a very serious thing. Not engaging in contact sports for a couple of months is a good thing, whether you get paid $20k or $20mil a year.

He's a useful player, just grossly overpaid. He should be a vet min guy. That's not his fault, blame Ainge.

And he's included in every trade rumor because he has a large expiring deal. It's economics, not basketball.

Because he has been pretty much the only tradeable contract for several years. Pretty much no potential trades for veterans making more than vet minimum have worked without his contract value included. If it came down to not including Scal's contract, even Cfan would have only 3 trade proposals a year.

btw, where is Cfan?

Apparently you are not a bowler. "I didn't play any basketball" means he didn't play ANY basketball. If he had trained, shot, or done drills, he would have said so because his basketball IQ is off the charts.

The Scalabrine Paradox is really interesting, though. He's awesome but would be traded for a marginal upgrade? I don't get it.

Who the hell ever said he was awesome? The guy's been a punching bag on this board and in general since we signed him. He actually contributed last season, something few thought he ever would do and people have lightened up ... some. Hopefully for his skull and us he doesn't see much of the floor this season. If we do that means we had injuries again.

lol, no I don't bowl. They have this thing called candlepin bowling here, pretty weird stuff, I can't get into it.

Using another example though, if I go to the driving range, I don't say I went golfing.

He's a pro-athlete, of course he trained. What do you think, he sat around playing x-box and drinking beer?

From weei.blog-

"The Celtics forward began playing basketball nearly three weeks ago when he returned from Washington to Boston for the upcoming season. Up until that point he had been following the training routine outlined by the team’s strength and conditioning coach, Bryan Doo."
