Lester inks one year deal.....Here's our 15th man!

Post#1 » by mainevent3405 » Tue Sep 29, 2009 6:42 am

Per the Herald:

Hudson gets deal

Rookie Lester Hudson, who has worked out patiently all summer without a contract, walked onto the floor with a new one-year deal in hand.

“I was very anxious about it,” he said. “But it’s a great feeling. I got to work out with all of the guys on this team.”

Hudson appears to be the last guard - and the 15th man - on the roster.

I'm fine with this move. Let the youngster learn from the vets. I like this better than signing an over aged or below average vet.

Kinda surprised..what about that guy from the clippers who had some 20 point games? You would think he would win the job.

I think it's a good sign too that they're not bringing a vet pg into camp. I think they like how he's come along and that he's got his head screwed on straight.

Im sure they will still look at any decent player that gets bought out (rumor has it Jaric may be outta memphis on their board?)

surprised they didnt chase BJax a bit more

but im happy he will get the chance at least, hopefully they give him some burn in pre-season and see what hes got against real competition

he better have nba handles, i know Quis and House will share the back up duties in the back court but if rondo is out for a couple of games here and there (touch wood) we do need another point guard option

It is probably a partially guaranteed deal...I doubt he is here at the end of the season.

In past years we signed our second rounders to multi year deal, so I don`t think the management is too confident about Lester...

Welcome aboard Lester! Here's hoping you turn some heads in preseason!

fixed.

I also like this practice of signing second round picks before or at the start of camp. If I remember correctly Danny did this with Pruitt, Powe, and Davis. If a player is going to work for the team, they ought to get paid, and the size of the paycheck is much smaller than the rotation players-- it's worth the risk to get them onto a short deal and see how they pan out. Also gets rid of all the question marks regarding contracts and thus concentrate on learning the plays.

Sweetney was signed so the Celtics would have another big guy who went through training camp in case Ainge is able to pull of a Tony Allen & Scalabrine trade inthe next few weeks (i.e. Daniels, Bell etc.). Sweetney is big man insurance and will take Scalabrine's place if Ainge is able to pull off a trade.

Actually I don't think anyone would or even can play in an NBA camp without a contract. Most give the player about 30 grand for camp as the game checks don't actually kick in until the season starts, and that part of the minimum salary isn't guaranteed.

The more telling sign is that instead of bringing in another point to compete with Hudson they are going to let him sink or swim on his own. Likely a reward for hard work over the summer. The numbers are also a little off having only 3 points in camp and TA is hurt so expect them to be working Giddens at the point.

As for going with Hudson over Mike Taylor. Taylor has had some flashes but he also is proven that at this point he is pretty one dimensional and not a guy who can run an offense. Hudson is a very similar player but an unknown quantity, everyone already knows Mike Taylor, he may be the guy who had some 20 point games and he is also the guy who got cut by the Clippers.

I think the C's expect to play four guys at point during the camp: RR, LH, EH and MD.

I like this because there's no reason to sign a scrub vet PG and not give Hudson a chance. We have small trading chips to do that later on in the season. Good move.

What's the deal with Sweetney exactly? We signed him even though we now have 16? How does that even work?

He's better than anyone out there, minus Marbury, so I'm glad he's here

What's a kid like that do for spending money while he is waiting on a contract? Is there some sort of NBA scale that guys get who are working out for teams but are not signed? Did he have enough left over from what he was paid in college?

None of the 3 minimum contracts are likely guaranteed, Williams, Hudson, Sweetney. One possibly two go.
