OT: West misses first day of training camp

Post#1 » by King Of The 4th » Tue Sep 29, 2009 10:00 pm

Delonte West did not report for the first day of the Cavs' training camp on Tuesday. West's absence was not excused.

"On a personal note, you always hope he's doing well," Mike Brown said. "But I have to continue looking forward and coaching this team. Whether it is Delonte or somebody else, if they miss practice and it is unexcused it will be handled internally."

West was arrested on gun charges Sept. 17 and admitted at the Cavs' media day on Monday that he was struggling to stay on medication to manage a mood disorder.

Not sure what's going on in West's head right now. :-?

Hopefully they buy him out or release him, and we can pick him up. He loved Boston.

I don't think he ever recovered after being traded to Seattle. Apparently no one from the Celtics brass warned him about being traded, so it came as a shock to him. Seattle in the winter can make even the happiest guy depressed. Not getting any playing time probably didn't help much either. And let's face it, going to Cleveland is probably a little worse.

I don't agree with you that he did anything to himself. All we hear from the press is: "Depression," "Packing heat on a motorcycle," and "AWOL from camp". We're obviously not hearing about the everyday stuff so there might be some seriously deep issues here. I always liked Delonte as a player. I hope he gets it together.

Even if secretly he's not a good person, I still wish him the best. Why wouldn't I?

Apart from the depression, which may not be his fault, what lately has convinced that he's a "good guy"?

This whole deal sounds like it's just not going to end well?

Hope he realizes that he needs some help before he really does some harm to someone or to himself.

Delonte is a classic newb with Bipolar. Like many others who are relatively recently diagnosed, he still thinks he can get by without treating or medicating it (he can't). He was quoted as having trouble maintaining his meds recently. There is no such thing as "having trouble" swallowing some pills (actually there is, but not in relation to this), but there is a such thing as denial or simply loving the hypomanic state and wanting more. It takes a while and a few negative experiences (none too drastic or detrimental to your health, career or personal relationships if you're lucky) before most people realize that the good that can come from a manic episode is nowhere near the immediate or long-term destruction it will ultimately wreak on your life.

I just hope he doesn't get himself killed or seriously effed up doing something stupid before he fully grasps the severity of the illness and the importance of treating it properly. I hate to say it but it's probably going to cut his career much shorter than it should be if he keeps on this way, and that would be a shame.

Yeah. I agree with that theory. It sounds like a guy who went off his meds. Maybe he needs to be committed like House was. :P

Delonte is in the perfect situation for himself and he is seriously screwing it up. He isn't as talented as Ron Artest and guys with his talent level who behave this way find their way out of NBA. I wish him the best but I imagine that Cleveland is losing patience with him.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

A little OT, but I just read that as people with bipolar diagnoses exit their mid-to-late 20s some have the illness remit- speculation it's for some people a phase of brain maturation. So maybe Delonte will regain his balance just in time to come back to Boston as a free agent. Eddie House can't shoot forever..
