You know, the one thing we'll have to find out in the preseason ... is Scal at the three. You know, how much he can play threes, who he can guard. You know, if there's a great three, can you put Scal on the two and let Marquis guard the three if we're going with five subs at the same time . . .?

Well, according to nba.com, Scal might play as a center. :o

I guess Scal is so versatile, he can play all positions.

What Doc's saying here is there will be a long bench. He's committed to cutting down the older starters' minutes. That means the team is going at least 10 deep.

The second five is Rasheed, Baby, Scalabrine, Daniels and House. (Walker is shelved. Tony Allen is hobbled. Giddens isn't ready. Hudson will have to earn it. Unless something's changed Shelden is Shelden.)

That second unit can work against many teams but Daniels can only play one spot at a time. This group should be fine on offense. The question is on the defensive end.
Who guards the 3? Scalabrine can get away with it against some guys. Daniels and Scal can swap assignments against other teams. Maybe Big Baby can cover some 3 against big lineups. Sometimes it won't work and you'll have to insert Pierce or Ray.

Next to bottom line: It's a strong bench that will defeat most other benches.

Bottom line: You have to rest the the big 3. Going deep into the bench is the only way to do it. In the playoffs you can shorten the rotation.

I love Scals but I feel lost on this one.

Scals is a Forward, naturally a 3 but can play 4 against smaller bigs,
We play him a center on rare occasion because he is a decent 3 point shooter and he can draw the opposing center out of the box.

Scal at SG? Well technically Scals can play PG but it doesn't mean it's a smart move.

Sure he can play SG if it's for 2 minutes and he guards Penny Hardaway.
Oh wait he is retired, nevermind, Scals should not play SG.

Scalabrine is a Forward/ frontcourt player. Next!!!!!!!

I can hear Bill Walton now, "Brian Scalabrine, who has no business playing the SG position, is the greatest Celtic SG, next to every other SG that has ever played in Boston, OF ALL TIME!!!!!!

Scalabrine won't play guard on offense. Just defense, and only on rare occasions when he can't guard the opposing 3 but can guard the opposing 2.

Um, Scal can play perimeter fours, and a very small # of 3s. No amount of practice is going to change that. I'm not sure what Doc is talking about at all.

Further, I don't see the necessity in playing 5 bench guys at ANY ONE TIME. Okay, so you wanna get the Big 3 rest--that's fine and you can easily do it by using Rondo as the bridge to the 2nd unit. I struggle to think of any 5 man bench unit that's ever been successful for a successful team--ever.

I'd rather see TA or Giddens in the game at 2 than Scal...and that's only if we absolutely HAVE to have 5 bench players on the floor.

If there's a non-offensive player like Dantay Jones or Shane Battier at the 2, then playing Scal there makes sense

It is that simple, and frankly there are plenty of those guys coming off the bench for NBA teams. It simply comes down to who is going to play those 10-12 mpg Paul doesn't play. Boston is already going to be working in Wallace and Daniels, this team doesn't need to have another guy who doesn't know the rotations or the plays. Scal knows the plays, he knows what he is supposed to do and what everyone else is supposed to do. He also can shoot the corner 3 an issue we did not really address this offseason as Wallace is more of a top of the key 3 point shooter like Raef and Daniels isn't that good at it from anywhere.

What I expect Doc is looking to avoid is a scenario were ORL or CLE for instance leave Carter or James in and tries to dictate Doc's rotation by bringing back Pierce to defend or juggling his line up and going small with House, Daniels, and TA and giving up shooting and rebounding.
